On the night of July 11, the russians launched another ballistic missile strike on Kyiv, causing destruction in several areas of the city and injuring at least 12 people. This is the third attack on Kyiv in a week. At the same time, an air raid alert was declared in the capital after the first explosions, and not a single ballistic missile was shot down again. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c2kyenzjv4no

Something was burning heavily nearby again, but we came to the paradoxical conclusion that although the destruction has become greater, the missile attacks are not felt so scary, probably because the main source of noise from the explosions was air defense. Now, if the missile does not hit nearby, the explosions are almost not heard.

In fact, things are much worse in the east, where, in addition to missiles and drones, aerial bombs are also being used. The security situation there has deteriorated sharply in a matter of weeks. Zaporizhzhia is located only 24 km from the front line, but the city is still home to about 750,000 people. In recent weeks, russian drones and bombs have hit numerous buses, gas stations, schools, government buildings and residential buildings. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c8d2zry3010o

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Ukraine has refused to lift the sanctions imposed on former President Petro Poroshenko by Zelensky. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cr4ddz3xy6vo

This was an expected decision that confirms the complete dependence of the courts on the government and the futility of expecting justice either from law enforcement agencies or in court. It remains a mystery to me how the population remains relatively law-abiding while the state demonstrates complete disregard for the law and is its main violator.

The authorities reported that within 24 hours, law enforcement officers had identified and detained a suspect in the beating of a police officer during a clash that occurred on July 8 in Lviv, when a fight broke out between mobilization center employees, police, and local residents. In total, according to the Prosecutor General's Office, about 200 people participated in the conflict, their identities are being established. Volodymyr Zelensky, of course, condemned the events and said that "the story is very bad. Very bad attitude towards people in military uniform."

https://www.facebook.com/groups/olexiy.kucherenko/permalink/27510749335285357/?rdid=KXeJHgm56OljAqZQ&share_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fshare%2Fp%2F1Gx9SUMXdM%2F#

However, a video from the scene shows that a person in military uniform was the first to hit the young man, and some believe that he is not a military man at all, but one of those bandits who unofficially help mobilization centers catch and beat people, receiving informal exemption from mobilization. Of course, there is no official explanation as to who it was and why the workers of the mobilization centers, who by law are only authorized to hand people summonses, not to catch them on the streets.

But more to come. Participants in the large-scale conflict with the mobilization center in Lviv apologized to the servicemen in a video. The video was posted on the Facebook page by veteran Anton Petrivsky, and on Telegram by the commander of the 2nd assault battalion of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, Dmytro Kukharchuk. The author of the video reported that he had an "educational conversation" with the participants. https://www.pravda.com.ua/news/2026/07/10/8043332/

Of course, I cannot verify the author of the video and the people depicted in it, but if this really happened, then this is an example of lynching, which is a crime. The very fact of the appearance of such a video only intensifies the confrontation between civilians and the military. And if the military were behind this, then it also discredits everyone who wears a military uniform. I'm not saying that if it is now considered acceptable to use force not only by the police and courts, but by anyone who has enough strength for this. If the state does not react to this, it will mean its consent to this and implicit control over such gangs. At least we didn't see the videos in which workers of mobilization centers or units that torture people to death apologize.

Perhaps the best way to convey what is happening is a comment I saw on Facebook that this story is not about an overturned car or a local skirmish in Lviv between “evaders” and “military,” as the state propaganda machine is already rushing to portray, but a concentrated slice of that humiliating state reality in which Ukraine formally fights for freedom, dignity, and European subjectivity, but internally increasingly reproduces the russian vertical of coercion, where a person is not a citizen, not a bearer of sovereignty, not a partner of the state in the war for survival, but a resource, a body, an object of extraction, a unit of account that can be stopped, intimidated, dragged, humiliated, put in front of a camera, forced to apologize, and then also called it “respect for the military.”

And perhaps Zelensky was right when he said about the bad attitude not towards the military, but towards people in military uniform, since many in Ukraine believe that not everyone who wears a military uniform is a military person and there is a big difference between those who fight at the front and those who, under the guise of a uniform, participate in scenes of coercion against their own citizens.

And this is a symptom of a much more terrible thing: the state, which has lost the legitimacy of the procedure, begins to acquire not law but force; not trust but fear; not law but hybrid coercive groups, in which there is a bit of a mobilization center, a bit of police, a bit of uniform, a bit of informal force resource, a bit of "patriotic" blackmail and a lot of the old gangster logic familiar to Ukrainians since the days of Yanukovych, only now this logic is not in an anti-Maidan jacket, but in a military pixel, and that is why it is even more dangerous, because it steals the sanctity of form from those who truly defend Ukraine and gives it to the apparatus of humiliation.

And when videos of young men apologizing later appeared, the story became even worse, because it was no longer a reaction of the rule of law, but a ritual of public submission, familiar to us from much darker political cultures, where a person is not simply punished for an action, is not found guilty by a court, is not given a lawyer, is not determined to be responsible proportionally, is not forced to compensate for the damage caused by legal means, but is broken in front of the camera, forced to say the right words, is put in the position of the guilty even before the trial, is marked with humiliation for years to come, and is presented to society as "educational conversation," although this is not education, but a demonstration of the power of the stronger over the weaker, not justice, but lynching, not the restoration of justice, but the production of fear. https://www.facebook.com/groups/olexiy.kucherenko/permalink/27510749335285357

russia attacked Ukraine on the night of Thursday, July 9, with two Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 94 strike UAVs. Again, not a single ballistic missile was intercepted. https://nv.ua/ukr/ukraine/events/obstril-ukrajini-9-lipnya-povitryani-sili-ne-zmogli-zbiti-dva-iskandera-50622943.html

US President Donald Trump stated that the United States will grant Ukraine a license to produce an unspecified type of interceptor missile for Patriot air defense systems, which are critical for Ukraine’s ability to defend against Russian ballistic missiles. https://understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-july-8-2026/

In my opinion, this is a very strange statement from a common sense perspective, but given everything Trump has said before, it fits his style. To assess the reality of the production of missiles for Patriot systems in Ukraine, it is enough to answer the question why the US cannot produce a sufficient number of them on its own, having already built factories that are not attacked, as, for example, during the last attack, the missile production plant in Vyshneve near Kyiv was destroyed, along with several streets of residential buildings around it? https://focus.ua/uk/eksklyuzivy/760076-vibuh-u-vishnevomu-zvidki-rf-znala-kudi-biti-i-pitannya-do-kontrrozvidki

The NATO summit in Turkey was supposed to show that the Alliance remains united and confident in its actions. But its results left a mixed impression. The most attention was drawn to the harsh words of US President Donald Trump to NATO allies and the new escalation in the Middle East. At the same time, the trip was a success for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He is returning to Ukraine with a new package of support, writes the BBC.

The final declaration of the summit devoted a separate paragraph to Ukraine. According to media reports, some allies suggested writing that Ukraine's security is inextricably linked to the security of Europe. However, the United States did not support such a formulation. As a result, the document noted that Ukraine "contributes to transatlantic security," and NATO countries confirm unity in supporting Kyiv.

The allies also agreed to allocate $70 billion in military aid to Ukraine this year and to provide at least the same level of support next year. This means that Ukraine should receive at least $140 billion from NATO countries over two years. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c9v29yx0k3po

Polish President Karol Nawrotski told reporters about the results of an hour-long conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky, which took place within the framework of the NATO summit, Onet reports. "Neighbors must maintain channels of dialogue. What remains unchanged is that Russia remains the main threat to Poland and Ukraine. Historical issues have not been resolved. We did not go to this meeting with the hope that all issues would be resolved," he said. Despite the disagreements, the Polish president described the meeting as productive and said that the parties also discussed the format of future cooperation. https://wiadomosci.onet.pl/swiat/karol-nawrocki-podsumowal-szczyt-nato-w-ankarze-pokazalismy-ze-jestesmy-zjednoczeni/9cmkjtv

Given all this and the real consequences, it seems that Zelensky and Nawrotski artificially created this conflict, due to which each of them distracted the people from real problems within the country. And the long-term consequences for both countries and the problems for Ukrainians in Poland do not seem to bypass them. On the contrary, the problems for Ukrainians in Poland are beneficial for both - Zelensky gets more Ukrainians who will be forced to return to Ukraine or will be deported there by Poland, and Nawrocki demonstrates to his marginal electorate that he is persecuting Ukrainians whose successes irritate some Poles. It is also better for Zelensky when Ukrainians discuss the UPA and "bad" Poles, rather than his absolute rule or his corrupt inner circle.

Instead, we have a ban on journalists investigating corruption among the leadership of the State Bureau of Investigation, searches at the home of Babel owner Oleksiy Babenko, who published a journalistic investigation into deaths in the Skelya unit, and sanctions against former Verkhovna Rada MP and veteran Boryslav Bereza, who publicly criticized the government and Zelensky personally.

https://www.radiosvoboda.org/a/news-zelensky-sanktsii-eksnardep-bereza/33798664.html

Perhaps in this way the authorities are trying to get more men to send them to the front, which is causing opposition among the population. A large-scale conflict broke out in Lviv between local residents and representatives of the mobilization center. An outraged crowd staged a mass riot over the detention of a young man and even overturned a military vehicle. https://thepage.ua/ua/news/bunt-proti-tck-u-lvovi-na-sihovi-perevernuli-avto-sho-kazhut-u-policiyi-ta-ova

In general, everything ultimately comes down to coercion. But if we proceed from the logic that to solve the problems of the state, it is necessary to coerce its citizens, then the next step may be to rape women in order to correct the demographic situation. All that is needed is to pass laws that a woman is obliged to give birth, for example, at least three children, and if she does not want to do this, she must be raped and banned from having an abortion. The system for registration is already set up, and women aged 25 to 60 (it does not matter that some of them will not be able to give birth due to their health if the medical commission recognizes them as fit for this) can also be raped by the big guys from the mobilization centers and the police, who are now catching and busifying men. Of course, this is sarcasm, but not so long ago history shows that anything is possible...

But is such a strategy correct in a fight for attrition with an enemy that is several times larger? Ukraine has two months to restart peace talks or risk russia escalating the war, the Czech president has said. Petr Pavel warned that Vladimir putin could declare a general mobilisation after elections set to be held on Sept 20. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/07/09/ukraine-has-two-months-end-war-or-face-massive-escalation/

Maybe that's why Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga received an invitation from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to pay an official visit to China. https://news.novyny.live/glava-mzs-kitaiu-zaprosiv-sibigu-vidvidati-krayinu-334464.html?utm_source=ukrnet_news

For the third time in a week, russia attacked Kyiv at night with ballistic missiles and drones. This time, first we heard explosions and only then the sound of an air raid siren. Again, no ballistic missiles were shot down, and a couple of dozen drones also hit their targets. Towards morning, jet drones arrived. One person was killed and two more were injured. Warehouses in different parts of the city burned, and 42 cars were damaged in one of the tram depots. Odesa and Kharkiv were also attacked. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cm2rg7ee384o

It became known that during the previous attack, the crew of an Mi-8 helicopter was killed while performing a combat mission to intercept russian drones. https://kurs.com.ua/novost/1469205-vo-vremja-perehvata-dronov-pogib-akipazh-ukrainskogo-mi-8

Meanwhile, the NATO summit is underway in Turkey, and the US and Iran have resumed active hostilities. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/clyex3n1x32o

Ukraine's president has used a speech at the NATO summit in Turkey to urge allies to deliver the air defence systems Kyiv urgently needs to protect it from escalating russian attacks. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9d227e5zj6o

The only problem is that ballistic missiles can only be shot down by Patriot complexes, the anti-aircraft missiles for which are produced less than the ballistic missiles they are supposed to shoot down. Also, now the Patriots are needed by the USA and other NATO countries. So it seems that the russians can now hit any target in Ukraine with ballistic missiles without obstacles.

Fuel market participants warn that russian shelling, which has already destroyed a considerable number of gas stations, could completely destroy traditional fuel retail. At least 13 people were killed in the second large-scale russian attack on the Ukrainian capital in a week, officials said. Six more were killed in the wider Kyiv region. Sunday's "massive russian attack" consisted of 68 missiles and 351 strike drones. The air force shot down or suppressed 37 missiles and 326 drones. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cewqqnd7zdwo

The Ukrainian energy company also reported power outages in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Zaporizhia regions due to the attack. https://www.facebook.com/npcukrenergo/posts/pfbid035E6dsDBTxA3fzzDXMbNESzWBg2RSRDYdF1EgXRpqF49sbpVxFr3uEvuximApC3L7l

The russian airstrike on July 4 completely destroyed the Zaporizhzhia Cable Plant, one of the few enterprises in Ukraine that manufactured cable and wire products. https://zabor.zp.ua/new/pratsyuvav-do-ostannogo-pislya-udaru-rf-po-zaporizkomu-kabelnomu-zavodu-pidpriemstvo-povnistyu-zupinilo-virobnitstvo

This time, none of the 29 ballistic missiles were shot down and I didn’t hear any Patriot launches. Instead, one of the missiles flew so close to the roof that I was afraid it would blow away my antenna. It seems that this was the first time my daughter was really scared. So the destruction this time is really great. Destroyed multi-story residential buildings and who knows what else. Half of the sky was covered in smoke, and the explosions of an ammunition depot in a small town near Kyiv continued for a long time and were visible from Kyiv. It is interesting that russia declares that one of its goals is the fight against the regime, yet not a single launch was made against the parliament or the president’s office, although due to the lack of anti-aircraft missiles for Patriots, any russian ballistic missile would have reached its target without any obstacles.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated in an interview with Bild that the issue of providing Ukraine with German Taurus air-launched cruise missiles is no longer critical. According to him, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have demonstrated high efficiency in destroying military logistics on the territory of the russian Federation even without these German missiles. https://www.bild.de/politik/inland/boris-pistorius-macht-ukraine-hoffnung-so-gut-sah-es-noch-nie-aus-6a4915b9ad32e994f875b658

Meanwhile, Poland has signed an agreement with the American company Anduril Industries to localize the production of Barracuda cruise missiles, which can fly over 900km. This involves the creation of production facilities for assembly, maintenance and adaptation of missile software to European needs. Poland became the first country in Europe to conclude such an agreement with Anduril, which is of strategic importance for the security of the region. https://biz.liga.net/ua/other-industries/news/polshcha-lokalizuie-vyrobnytstvo-krylatykh-raket-barracuda-pidpysano-uhodu

The heat has subsided a bit and it has started to rain. There’s also less smoke, and I’m finally feeling a little better. Last night I was only able to lower my blood pressure with a triple dose of medication, and my heart hurt as much as it hasn't in a long time.

After the scandal over abuse and deaths in the "Skelya" unit, even more interesting information has emerged. The 425th separate assault regiment "Skelya" announced that more than 500 servicemen of the unit have been officially identified as drug addicts and are currently being transferred to specialized medical facilities for substitution therapy. This was stated in an interview with Radio Liberty by the head of the civil-military cooperation group of the unit, Andriy Suray. He explained that the figure of about 2,000 people with drug addictions, previously announced by the military ombudsman Olga Reshetylova, is the internal statistics of the regiment itself, which was transferred to the relevant structures. In addition to drug disorders, 13 servicemen with tuberculosis were recorded in "Skelya", who were hospitalized and are being treated. Separately, according to him, there is a "certain number" of soldiers with hepatitis C. https://censor.net/ua/n4011493

And this is just one unit in which, apparently, too many people died while still at the "training" stage. So I have only one question - how did all these sick people end up in the army and who will be responsible for this? Obviously, the question is rhetorical.

Ukraine and Germany are discussing mechanisms for the return of Ukrainians of military age who illegally left the country within the framework of a joint working group, Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Oleksiy Makeyev told Ukrinform in an interview. https://www.ukrinform.ua/rubric-society/4140221-ukraina-obgovorue-z-nimeccinou-mehanizmi-povernenna-colovikiv-mobilizacijnogo-viku-posol.html

This has led to malicious jokes that the Germans are returning to the practice of persecuting people on national grounds, alluding to the persecution of Jews by the fascists. People see an analogy between how Jews were sent to concentration camps and Ukrainians to the army, from which no one returned. Perhaps because any act of violence is always violence, no matter what slogans those who commit it use to justify it.

Probably because any violence is always violence, no matter what slogans those who commit it justify it. The Polish Prime Minister emphasized that the tension in relations with Ukraine was caused by the unfounded decision of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and linked the issue of Ukraine's European integration with the resolution of complex historical issues. He also shifted the responsibility for finding ways to reduce this tension to Zelensky. https://censor.net/ua/n4011630

It looks like Ukraine has lost its last friendly politician in Poland, and the process of worsening relations has become irreversible. Of course, ordinary people and the interests of both Ukraine and Poland will suffer from this. It seems that russia has won another victory on foreign territory.

Hi Bob! Surprisingly, the children aren't too bothered by the shelling; apparently, they see it as just a regular part of life. But I agree that every year it is more interesting to communicate with them, especially in areas where professional interests overlap. I am very pleased that my daughter can debate with me on many political and historical issues almost on an equal footing, and my son has already surpassed me in financial analysis.
Happy Independence Day and best wishes!

Horrible. I’m very relieved that you (and friends) weren’t hurt.

Very nice that your family was able to get together last week. Glad that your children are doing well. Children change a lot as they become fully functioning adults and for some time afterwards too. Discussing issues of the times with mine was also interesting, and sometimes quite surprising.

russian forces have launched a major drone and missile attack on Kyiv overnight, killing 21 people, in what the city's mayor described as the "most massive attack" on the Ukrainian capital. Eighty-five people were injured, including two children, Ukraine's State Emergencies Service said. Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said an ambulance station was among the places hit.

Ukraine's air force said russia had launched 74 missiles and 496 drones overnight, mainly targeting the capital. While the country's air defences were able to repel most of these, 25 ballistic missiles and 12 drones struck 33 locations. russia also hit military bases in central and eastern Ukraine, according to the defence ministry. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4gyv05gk4do

My friends and I could watch the numerous hits directly from our windows and thank God none of us were hurt. Indeed, the air defense is working less and less. Many roads in the city are blocked, but I have both water and electricity. Isn't that a miracle? There are a lot of fires and smoke, which is very difficult in the heat that is in Kyiv now. I feel so bad that I don't even try to do anything. In a couple of days it should start to rain and the temperature will drop.

Ukraine will have to not only return its citizens from abroad, but also attract foreign specialists for the post-war economic recovery. There will be no other option, said the head of the Presidential Office, Kyrylo Budanov, explaining this by the rapid deterioration of the demographic situation in the country. https://www.kyivpost.com/uk/post/79048

russia’s close alliance with Belarus is facing a new test as President Alexander Lukashenko has shown reluctance to deepen his role in Vladimir putin’s war against Ukraine. Lukashenko held two days of talks with putin starting Friday at the russian leader’s residence near Lake Valdai after publicly warning russian officials against efforts to pull Belarus into the conflict.

The Belarusian leader has repeatedly said his country doesn’t intend to get involved in the war unless attacked. But he appeared to acknowledge there was pressure to do so on Thursday when he received russian Ambassador Boris Gryzlov, a close putin ally, and Moscow region Governor Andrey Vorobyov for talks in Minsk. “There’s no need for us to get drawn into the war,” Lukashenko told the russian envoys. “We also don’t want to fight Ukrainians, that’s why our position is peaceful.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-06-29/putin-s-closest-ally-tested-as-minsk-resists-deeper-war-role?srnd=homepage-europe

The russian regime is likely to remain a threat to its neighbors well after President Vladimir putin’s time in office ends, the head of Sweden’s military intelligence agency said. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-06-30/russian-threat-likely-to-endure-after-putin-sweden-says

Poland will not transfer MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine for the time being due to the Ukrainian side’s refusal from previous agreements on cooperation in the field of drones. The Polish government links these two issues as part of a partnership agreement, Polsat News reports. https://www.polsatnews.pl/gosc-wydarzen/2026-06-29/nie-ma-mig-ow-bo-nie-ma-dronow-szef-mon-o-wycofaniu-sie-ukrainy-z-umowy/

We must not elevate those who destroy European cooperation to the pantheon. Ukraine will not join the European Union with Bandera [...]. Personally, I see this as part of a larger conflict between Poland and Ukraine. It would seem that the Ukrainian authorities should be interested in smoothing out the conflict in these difficult times and not giving Polish provocateurs a reason to inflate the topic of Ukrainian nationalism. But no. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that on Constitution Day he submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law on the Ukrainian National Pantheon, which is designed to honor recognized Ukrainians. "No one will ever dictate to Ukrainians which heroes to honor, which holidays to celebrate, or which history to study. Our ancestors fought for this right to freedom of choice and national independence for hundreds of years, and it is for this that our soldiers are shedding their blood today. The memory of them must live forever," the head of the Presidential Office, Kyrylo Budanov also noted. https://www.pravda.com.ua/news/2026/06/28/8041492/

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court overturned the decisions that awarded the family of a soldier 15 million hryvnias (about $333,000). Such payments are provided for soldiers killed at the front, but in this case the soldier died from a service-related illness, although he was not directly killed by the russians. https://sud.ua/uk/news/publication/365134-verkhovniy-sud-skasuvav-rishennya-yakimi-rodini-viyskovogo-bulo-prisudzheno-viplatu-u-rozmiri-15-mln-griven

This is all you need to know about the real attitude of the state towards Ukrainian soldiers and another argument for those who avoid military service and do not want to die for Ukraine.
