On the night of July 30, russia launched a massive strike on Ukraine in several waves with ballistic missiles, hypersonic Zircons, Shaheds, and cruise missiles from the air and sea. The first wave of strikes on Kyiv, Vinnytsia, and Kryvyi Rih occurred after 1 a.m., and the second wave with cruise missiles began after 3:35 a.m. - mainly in western Ukraine, in particular Lviv. At 5 a.m., russia struck Kyiv again with ballistic missiles, and at 5:30 a.m. a new attack with cruise missiles began from the north.

Six people have already been reported dead in Kryvyi Rih - three of them children. This is all one large family. One person died in Kyiv and one person died near Poltava. In Lviv, two high-rise buildings were severely damaged, a rescue operation and clearing of rubble are underway, the number of injured has increased to 37, including children, one child was hospitalized. One person has been found dead under the rubble so far. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c4gjkkxy45do
https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/crmrv810y77o

This time, one of the russian missiles flew into Poland. It caused a 10m-wide (33ft) crater a short distance from the village of Tarnawa Kolonia, 92km (57 miles) from the border with Ukraine. Although no casualties had been reported in the incident, the Polish prime minister made clear it was being taken very seriously. There was no immediate threat as it had not landed in a built-up area, he said, adding that "we were prepared to shoot it down if had continued its flight". https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cwymkgenv2ro

In fact, this means that the Polish air defense simply could not intercept this missile and clearly demonstrated this to russia, which can not only provoke NATO with such events, but also test its air defense capabilities.

I feel unwell all the time and I only have 3-4 hours of productive work a day. The rest of the time I just lie down and try to calm down my high blood pressure and irregular heart rhythm.

In an interview with Ukrainska Pravda, Fedorov argues that his removal wasn’t driven by personal conflicts but by his efforts to reform Ukraine’s defense procurement system. At the same time, he did not name a single person or company that his reforms had hindered, nor did he criticize the authorities. Instead, much of his speech resembles an election campaign.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbjYc4-OuT0

One of the interesting coincidences is that it was at this time that the mobilization reforms he had prepared were scheduled to be launched. So now the issue of mobilization will be dealt with by other people with a different vision. So far, it has been significantly intensified using the same tools, accompanied by violence and corruption.

In Kyiv, while undergoing a military medical examination, a man attacked a female doctor with a knife, resulting in her death. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cm2g092xxjyo

In Kharkiv, a lawyer who was brutally beaten in a mobilization center while performing her duties last year has been recognized as disabled. After a year of fruitless investigations in Ukraine, the lawyer has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights, said Dmytro Lubinets, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. https://tsn.ua/ukrayina/vyyshla-z-ttsk-z-invalidnistiu-rezonansna-sprava-pobytoyi-advokatky-diyshla-do-yespl-foto-3129623.html

One of the first decisions of the new commander-in-chief, Drapaty, was to change the leadership of the ground forces, but we will not see when and what consequences will occur immediately. https://texty.org.ua/fragments/117987/pershi-kadrovi-rishennya-drapatoho-zvilneno-heneraliv-syrskoho-u-suxoputnyx-vijskax-i-syl-lohistyky/

The publication “Texts” published an investigation by journalist Anna Kalyuzhna about the 225th separate assault regiment. As stated in the publication on the website Texty.org.ua, several dozen people provided testimony for this investigation: servicemen of the 225th separate assault regiment (current and those who are hiding from persecution by deserting), servicemen of adjacent and affiliated units, relatives of missing persons.

They testify to the following: in the 225th separate assault regiment, they are threatened with executions, “and even shoot at their own people” (the regiment itself denies the existence of “barrier battalions”); between assaults, the servicemen are kept “as if in prison”; those “who are guilty” are thrown into “pits”, tied to the “tree of truth” and brutally beaten. https://texty.org.ua/articles/117979/nykakyx-svoyx-ne-sushchestvuet-zahorodzhuvalni-zahony-yamy-i-derevo-pravdy-vijskovi-svidchat-pro-225-polk/

The State Bureau of Investigation, in cooperation with the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, is conducting a large-scale special operation "Honest Draft". Investigative actions are taking place in more than 100 mobilization centers of various levels in most regions of Ukraine.

The main attention of law enforcement officers is focused on the facts of facilitating mobilization evasion for money, as well as abuse of official authority by military personnel of mobilization centers, in particular, beatings and torture of conscripts. https://dbr.gov.ua/news/operaciya-chesnij-prizov-dbr-provodit-obshuki-u-ponad-100-tck-po-vsij-ukraini

Today, as a result of an air raid in Kyiv, a well-known antique flea market from Soviet times burned down.

I was also contacted by a guy who is involved in the import, repair, and maintenance of cars for the military. I hope not the ones that will later hunt people on the streets. We installed a radio on one of these cars a couple of years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eU6RLEkJ1HE

On the night of August 1, the russians again attacked Ukraine with strike UAVs, as well as air- and ground-based missiles of various types, but only managed to shoot down 2 missiles out of more than three dozen. https://www.unian.ua/war/iz-27-balistik-zbili-lishe-odnu-povitryani-sili-rozpovili-pro-nichnu-ataku-rosiji-13457619.html

At least nine people have been killed and dozens injured in russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv. Officially, there are reports of the destruction of residential buildings and the enterprise serving the city hospital, including 5 completely destroyed and 20 more ambulances damaged. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ce973yvk7pko

I saw several large columns of smoke and my friend in the neighboring area said that there was a hit to one of the largest thermal power plants (TPP-5) in Kyiv. This is confirmed by information from another person who said that the electricity went out in his house which is powered by this TPP. Well, the stakes have risen again and the probability of the lack of heating and electricity at least in Kyiv is more than real.

More and more often, explosions are heard simultaneously with sirens. Most people died while they were running to shelters. Even for healthy people, these sleepless nights are a difficult ordeal, and it is very difficult for me too.

It is significant that the raids, which have recently been supplemented by temporary checkpoints, continued in the morning as usual. Even the existence of a map indicating the presence of "blues" and "greens," as cops and manhunters are popularly called, does not guarantee encounters with their cars randomly driving around the area.

President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with Fox News asked whether the issue of Crimea is back on the agenda? He has said "It's a pity – not. Or not yet. We will see, I don't know. The most important between us. The land is very important, it is our territory, it is our history, it's about our houses. But the most important not to lose people." https://www.foxnews.com/media/zelenskyy-says-putin-lost-initiative-ukraine-tech-industry-reshapes-war

So the liberation of russian-occupied Crimea is not currently under discussion in the negotiations.

russia has intensified its attacks on Ukrainian transport and port infrastructure in recent days. Civilian vessels in the Mykolaiv region have been attacked, as well as transport infrastructure in the Odesa region and the bridge between Slovyansk and Kramatorsk in the east. Warehouses of carriers and retail chains have also been set on fire.

https://www.rbc.ua/rus/news/rosiyani-vdarili-dnipru-goryat-skladi-produktami-1785764296.html

In July 2026, russia fired 376 missiles into Ukraine, a record monthly number since the start of the full-scale invasion, more than double the June figure (161), Le Figaro reports. https://www.lefigaro.fr/international/guerre-en-ukraine-la-russie-a-tire-un-nombre-record-de-missiles-en-juillet-20260801

Ukraine, however, continues to attack warehouses of retailer Wildberries and oil refineries in russia with drones. One of the downed drones crashed on a beach in Gelendzhik in southern russia, killing several russians and injuring nearly two dozen. https://www.bbc.com/russian/live/cp8x50y7gn0t

Attacks on Ukrainians continue in Poland. These are mostly isolated cases against women and children, but this is also becoming something common. https://inpoland.net.pl/

In Odesa, during an attempt to capture a man, the latter began shooting at workers at a mobilization center, wounding four of them. https://sud.ua/uk/news/ukraine/368283-v-odesi-cholovik-vidkryv-vohon-po-pratsivnykakh-ttsk-ie-poraneni

President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Rustem Umerov (who was previously the Minister of Defense) as the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, and Ihor Klymenko, the former Minister of Internal Affairs, as the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, replacing Umerov in this position. According to Zelensky, the new head of the Foreign Intelligence Service will coordinate work on concluding international agreements in the field of drones. Umerov will also continue to deal with diplomatic issues and the negotiation process with the United States. https://kurs.com.ua/novost/1472586-zelenskii-oficialno-oformil-naznachenie-umerova-i-klimenko-na-novie-dolzhnosti

Very strange tasks for intelligence. It seems that these people are now indispensable in the president's team, which is rapidly shrinking, so appointments are made not based on qualifications and the functionality of the position, but on personal preferences. Also, his former associates often turn into his enemies. As happened with his former press secretary Yulia Mendel, who gave an interview to the French Le Journal du Dimanche entitled "Zelensky is the main beneficiary of this war." https://www.lejdd.fr/International/exclusif-corruption-derive-autoritaire-iuliia-mendel-ex-porte-parole-de-zelensky-se-confie-au-jdd-180306

She harshly criticizes Volodymyr Zelensky and the current government and claims that the war allows the current president to remain in power by canceling the elections, and the conflict itself has allegedly become the basis of his political survival. According to Mendel, companies associated with Zelensky's entourage receive billions of euros in aid from the European Union. She notes that she has noticed signs of manipulation, censorship, and a retreat from democracy since the summer of 2022. Mendel believes that it is extremely important for Zelensky that "the whole world applauds him," which is why he allegedly believed in an artificially created image that identifies him with the entire country. She also criticized the methods of the mobile centers, calling them illegal, and called on the West to contribute to the early end of the war. https://www.facebook.com/iuliia.mendel.2025/posts/pfbid03fudhxEg3f614Md9Tb3hGEisWxpa41tUEYxTidtYhALaZsCHwTpjEC3eiN5ZbWbXl

The Telegraph writes about the slow death of the coalition of the willing. With Starmer gone and Macron soon to be replaced, a leadership vacuum could leave Europe rudderless. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/08/02/the-slow-death-of-the-coalition-of-the-willing/

Today russia has attacked Ukraine with ballistic missiles and drones, killing at least 21 people. Air defense forces were able to neutralize 98 enemy UAVs out of 115, but not a single missile out of 28 was shot down. As a result of this attack, warehouses of large manufacturers, retailers, and carriers were destroyed. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c330pxyvzzyo
https://rubryka.com/2026/08/05/atakuvaly-kyyiv-2/
https://forbes.ua/news/raketniy-udar-znishchiv-naybilshiy-sklad-rozetka-u-brovarakh-na-kiivshchini-05082026-40976

This time the explosions sounded even before the sirens.

Also, recently, russian missile strikes have destroyed the facilities of food producers and publishers. This includes millions of books, including textbooks for schools. https://forbes.ua/lifestyle/stoimo-na-mezhi-bankrutstva-i-robimo-vse-shchob-vistoyati-rosiya-znishchila-sklad-korporatsii-ranok-de-bulo-70-usikh-knig-golova-pravlinnya-viktor-kruglov-pro-zbitki-i-plan-vidnovlennya-04082026-40966?utmsource=smm&utmmedium=linkedin

Perhaps it is precisely because of the drastic decrease in industrial consumers that Ukraine not only does not turn off electricity to the population, but also sells the surplus to Romania? Romanian company Nuclearelectrica is buying electricity from Ukraine to cover the deficit after the shutdown of the first power unit of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. The shutdown of the power unit occurred against the backdrop of extremely low water levels in the Danube due to drought. https://epravda.com.ua/energetika/rumuniya-kupuye-elektroenergiyu-z-ukrajini-cherez-zupinku-aes-824267/

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the reduction in supplies of interceptor missiles for Patriot systems may be related not only to the war in the Middle East, but also to political motives to make Ukraine more compliant. https://antikor.info/articles/854818-zelenskij_predpolohil_chto_ukraine_sokratili_postavki_raket_dlja_patriot_chtoby_sdelatj_ee_ustupchivee

A North Korean missile unit has begun deploying to western russia and could be equipped with 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers for strikes against Ukraine, an official at Ukraine's military intelligence agency said. https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/north-korean-missile-unit-deploys-russia-ukraine-war-kyiv-says-2026-08-05/

The Defense Forces have information about the locations of russian ballistic installations - they were destroyed where possible. However, to hit enemy installations on enemy territory, we need appropriate weapons, which we currently do not have, sources in the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported. https://24tv.ua/ukrayina-znaye-mistsya-dislokatsiyi-balistichnih-ustanovok-rosiyi_n3118112

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday the EU had received €1.4bn (£1.2bn) from immobilised russian assets, which would be used to support Ukraine in its war against russia. https://minfin.com.ua/amp/2026/08/05/179105322/

The European Union is optimistic that winter liquefied natural gas imports will help offset inventories that are at their lowest level for this time of year in almost two decades. The EU's storage facilities are only around 57% full, the lowest for this time of year in records going back to 2009. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-08-04/eu-eyes-winter-lng-buys-as-storage-hits-near-two-decade-low

Since russia is one of the few, if not the only, source of gas for Europe, perhaps this optimism is explained by negotiations with it?

Former senior officials from the UK, France, Germany and russia met in Vienna last month to explore potential conditions for peace talks to end Moscow’s war on Ukraine, according to people familiar with the matter. The group included Britain’s former national security advisor, Tim Barrow, former German State Secretary Markus Ederer and seasoned French diplomat Pierre Vimont, the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential matters. They declined to identify the former Kremlin official at the meeting. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-08-05/european-and-russian-ex-officials-held-talks-on-war-in-ukraine

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has responded to the resonance surrounding the statement of the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Kingdom Valery Zaluzhny about the prospects of Ukraine's membership in NATO. The department emphasized that his words were taken out of context, and Kyiv's official position on joining the Alliance remains unchanged.

On August 3, during a discussion on Euro-Atlantic integration at a general meeting of Ukrainian ambassadors in Kyiv, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Kingdom and former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny, answering a question about cooperation with the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), expressed his own assessment of the prospects of Ukraine's accession to NATO. "I know NATO very well. For 12 years, I must have personally been involved in ensuring that we mastered NATO standards, and every year I listened to tales that we were about to join NATO. Unfortunately, we will never join it!" - said Valery Zaluzhny, whose words were quoted by European Pravda. https://glavred.net/politics/zaluzhnyy-popal-v-skandal-posle-slov-o-nato-v-mid-srochno-otreagirovali-10786199.html?utm_source=ukrnet_news

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office accuse former Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and former Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna, of corruption. Another big loss for Zelensky's team. https://nv.ua/ukr/ukraine/politics/nabu-vruchilo-pidozru-eksposlu-ukrajini-u-ssha-olzi-stefanishiniy-50630125.html

It sounds like yesterday's successful Ukrainian attack on the large Wildberries warehouse and distribution center was a major hit,  and maybe related to some of the attacks in Ukraine on consumer and civilian food supplies. Glad to hear that the attacks on Kyiv are not close to your location.
Did you see the Russian drone attack on the Ukrainian vegetable produce vendor,  a day or two ago? Obviously this was done simply to inspire terror, why am I not surprised?

Hello Braden and thank you for your interest in Ukraine and support!

It is obvious that Ukraine is trying to destroy what it can with the means it has. russia, on the other hand, can freely choose its targets and, as of today, even be sure that every missile will reach it. Terror? Of course. And what else could the war of attrition that Zelensky once declared actually be? Only I ask the question again: how do you expect to exhaust an enemy whose resources are many times greater than yours? To grab even more people on the streets? This is precisely what is destroying inside the country that russia did not destroy with its missiles. Recently, the level of hatred for Zelensky has increased significantly. People no longer find him funny. Probably because after the last winter even his most mentally limited supporters finally understood that powerful slogans cannot stop the enemy and heat the house, and they themselves have already become victims of the regime they chose. The russians probably left the destruction of the remnants of energy, water supply sources and bridges for last.

The intelligence-sharing relationship between the U.S. and Ukraine has bounced back to previous highs, according to long-time Ukraine watchers — a welcome boost during a critical window of opportunity for the Ukrainian war effort, writes Politico. https://www.politico.com/news/2026/08/05/us-ukraine-intelligence-sharing-01026525

But overall, I agree with the conclusions of Owen Matthews of The Spectator that n important turning point has been reached in russia’s war on Ukraine. But unfortunately for Kyiv, it’s not the ‘tide is turning’ in Ukraine’s favour narrative that Volodymyr Zelensky has been pushing ever since his long-range drone attacks began smashing oil refineries and logistics warehouses deep inside russia and sinking dozens of ships in the Sea of Azov. Rather, last night not one of the 27 ballistic missiles fired by russia at and around Kyiv was shot down. By the terrible arithmetic of war, the casualty numbers were not in themselves game-changing. But Ukraine’s inability to stop incoming ballistic missiles – especially Zircon and Kindzhal hypersonic missiles that travel at up to nine times the speed of sound – is a fundamental strategic flaw that the Kremlin is exploiting mercilessly. As Zelensky himself said last month, “ballistic missiles are russia’s last strategic advantage.” https://spectator.com/article/a-grim-turning-point-has-been-reached-in-russias-war-on-ukraine/

His simple calculations show that there simply are not enough Patriot complexes and interceptor missiles for it in the world, as well as the ability to quickly produce them, in contrast to the number of missiles produced by russia, North Korea and Iran. I am not talking about China. But in the case of Ukraine, there is a real threat that russia will also begin forced mobilization in the fall. What will Ukraine be able to counter this?

Former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhny said that Russia was able to find ways to counter almost all types of NATO weapons that Ukraine used during the war. “Ukraine used all types of weapons, except for the Tomahawks, nuclear weapons, aircraft carriers and F-35s that are in NATO service, and applied the doctrines of their use. The resource is exhausted. The russian ederation found a countermeasure to all this,” Zaluzhny said.
https://antikor.info/articles/854916-valerij_zaluhnyj_zajavil_chto_rossija_nashla_protivodejstvie_pochti_vsemu_vooruheniju_nato

The US used everything except nuclear weapons in Iran with a known result.

The last missile attacks destroyed many production facilities and warehouses, including Bosch and Toyota, which may discourage the desire to continue working in Ukraine even for those foreign companies that were here. What can we say about new investments? But no matter how ridiculous it may seem, unable to change the world, I continue to work on improving myself and prepare for the time when my knowledge, skills and abilities will again be in demand and appreciated. Recently, due to constant missile attacks and high temperatures (+30C and more), I feel not very well and exhausted. But you know what keeps me going and does not lose faith.

Wlad, thank you for the prompt reply. God bless you for improving yourself, in other words improving the things that are actually under your control and trying not to worry about things you can't control. There are rumors that the US is running low on key armaments as well, for obvious reasons.
The whole Russia war on Ukraine is so damn unfair and frustrating, even from afar. I pray for you and your family!

On the night of August 5, russia launched 24 ballistic missiles at Ukraine, which the Air Force classified as belonging to the joint category "Iskander-M/S-400". The main direction of the strike was the Kyiv region. Due to the shortage of Patriot missiles, it was not possible to intercept any targets.

The peculiarity is that the S-400 is originally a complex for shooting down missiles, not for striking ground targets. But the russians put missiles on the assembly line for them, reached Kyiv and significantly strengthened their strike capabilities.

This is not the first time that the russians have used air defense missiles to strike ground targets. In 2022, they hit frontline cities with old anti-aircraft missiles from the S-300 systems.

Later, there was confirmation of the use of new 48N6 missiles, compatible with the later S-300 and S-400. And in 2026, they were joined by the RM-48U, which russian industry is serially converting from retired anti-aircraft missiles. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, in 2025 the enemy produced 200 such missiles, and the plan for 2026 exceeds 480 units.

The RM-48U is not equal to the Iskander in terms of accuracy, warhead mass, and ability to penetrate protected structures. Instead, it increases the number of high-speed targets in a combined attack and further burdens the Ukrainian early warning and missile defense system. https://oboronka.mezha.ua/yak-rosiya-peretvorila-s-400-na-zbroyu-teroru-313900/

But the new russian ballistic missiles and their increase in number are not the only new problem for Ukraine. Since the fall of 2022, the Shahed-136 kamikaze strike drones (in the russian version, Geran-2) have been the main and most massive means of the russian army for air strikes on the Ukrainian rear. Now their era is coming to an end. Instead, jet counterparts are entering the arena, which are much more difficult for Ukrainian air defense to shoot down and which have artificial vision based on AI. Thanks to these weapons, the russian Federation has already been able to block Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea.

During the shelling of Kyiv on the night of August 4-5, the share of jet UAVs in the total number of strikes for the first time was more than half, the Ukrainian Air Force reported. That night, the russians launched 115 strike drones, of which almost 85% were shot down and suppressed. The next day, russia launched 101 drones, and again more than half of them were jet-powered. The kill rate dropped even lower, to 65%. This is because jet-powered drones fly higher and faster, and new means must be created to intercept them. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/ce971erm7m2o

On the night of August 7, russia launched one of the most massive strikes on Naftogaz Group facilities in eastern Ukraine. Seven Ukrnafta assets that provide oil and gas production were hit. The company reported that significant production volumes were lost due to the destruction of critical equipment, and the work of a number of facilities was stopped. https://ua.news/ua/war-vs-rf/rf-zdiisnila-odnu-z-naimasovanishikh-atak-na-obiekti-naftogazu-na-skhodi-ukrayini

On the night of today, August 8, russia attacked Ukraine with six ballistic missiles, as well as 151 drones, of which only 135 drones were intercepted. Missiles and 13 drones were hit at 12 locations. https://uatv.ua/uk/shist-balistychnyh-raket-ta-ponad-150-bpla-zapustyla-rf-po-ukrayini-shho-vidomo-pro-naslidky/

At least three people, including a child, have been killed in overnight russian attacks near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cz7dy8gq99eo
In two districts of Kyiv and in a village near Kyiv, industrial enterprises and nearby houses were hit. https://kanaldim.tv/rosiya-vchergove-vdaryla-po-kyyevu-ta-oblasti-shho-vidomo-pro-naslidky-foto/

During the war, it is better not to live near factories, infrastructure facilities, warehouses and other similar facilities. But the industry is not only threatened by direct hits from missiles and drones.

Despite the general attention to the agricultural sector, the greatest threat of losing Ukraine's export potential now hangs over the mining and metallurgical complex and the oil industry. Due to the blockade of seaports, the country is on the verge of a forced shutdown of the giants of heavy industry, as the railway is physically unable to transport oversized cargo. The way out of this crisis could have been foreseen at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Especially considering the constant threat of blocking the ports. However, during all the years of the war, not a single railway branch with a European gauge was built in Ukraine. https://novyny.live/ekonomi/agro/gzk-vzhe-zupiniaiutsia-iak-zablokovani-porti-nishchat-metalurgiiu-ta-oliinii-biznes-339039.html

Instead, the war in Ukraine has brought Kim Jong-un record profits, Bloomberg reports. Between 2022 and 2025, Kim received $22 billion in foreign exchange, nearly four times the amount he received in the previous four years after US sanctions were imposed. In 2022, russian leader Vladimir putin launched an invasion of Ukraine, giving Kim an unexpected opportunity. Moscow asked Pyongyang for Soviet-era artillery. North Korea’s domestic stockpiles have become a valuable resource that Kim has been able to convert into cash, food aid and advanced military technology.

Ukrainian intelligence estimates that by the end of 2025, North Korea was supplying up to 50% of russia’s needs for 122mm and 152mm ammunition. Kim Jong-un also supplied russia with men, sending between 16,000 and 22,000 troops in exchange for about $2,000 a month each. https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2026-north-korea-windfall/?srnd=homepage-europe

At the end of June, Ukraine's state and state-guaranteed debt amounted to UAH 9.49 trillion, or $211.6 billion, and in June alone, the debt increased by UAH 173.9 billion. The main reason was the receipt of funding from the EU and the World Bank to cover the budget's needs during the war, said Danylo Hetmantsev, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Tax and Customs Policy. https://psm7.com/uk/money/skilky-groshej-zaborguvala-ukrayina-mizhnarodnym-partneram-getmanczev.html

On June 25, 2026, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, known for his love of unfulfilled plans and empty slogans, approved the conduct of a 40-day operation by the Security Service of Ukraine to influence the aggressor state, which was unofficially called "compelling russia to peace." The goal was formulated directly: to force russia to end the war by systematically putting pressure on key points on which its ability to continue fighting depends - oil infrastructure, air defense, logistics, military production and the fleet. Interestingly, the term "compelling peace" was once used by Russia itself - in relation to the war against Georgia in 2008.

According to the Security Service of Ukraine, during the campaign, more than 100 successful strikes were carried out on strategically important objects in russia and in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. Strikes were carried out on the oil industry, the shadow fleet, military aviation and air defense.

On August 4, 2026, when the formal 40-day period ended, President Zelensky announced that he had approved new SBU operations against russia and announced “good results” of the Service’s work. Commenting on the end of the formal period, Head of the Presidential Office Kyriylo Budanov emphasized that special measures would continue in the future — without a clearly defined time limit. According to him, what is important is not the number of days, but the result and how Ukraine will emerge from this process. https://censor.net/ua/blogs/4016976/pidsumky-40-dennoyi-operatsiyi-prymus-rosiyi-do-myru-ogoloshenoyi-zelenskym

Well, the actions were undoubtedly effective, although they did not force russia to make peace. Still, the scale of losses for russia should be much greater. russia's advantage in weapons and people is obvious. So far, I do not see how Ukraine can gain an advantage in a direct military confrontation.

The chorus of optimism has quieted on several fronts, including Zelensky’s struggle with corruption and his relations with Trump, writes The Atlantic. Earlier this summer, Ukraine had finally seized the initiative in its punishing four-year war. President Volodymyr Zelensky had plenty of dramatic victories and technological advances to tout to his Western backers as he made the case that russia can be defeated.

At one point earlier this summer, Zelensky could look ahead to an influx of new U.S. missiles to defend Kyiv, the right to make even more in Ukraine, and the potential ability to strike inside russia thanks to Fedorov’s overtures to Musk. He enjoyed greater respect from Trump for Ukraine’s innovations and battlefield momentum, and better relations across Washington thanks to a well-regarded young ambassador.

Instead, Trump appears to have turned lukewarm and is stalling on previous commitments on Patriot missiles. Entreaties to Musk have so far failed. Zelensky’s firing of his popular defense minister has prompted protests at home. And Ukraine has no ambassador to make the case for continued U.S. support, because the previous one returned home to face charges of corruption.

The US position remains inconsistent. One of the Pentagon's top generals overseeing military operations in Europe Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza, commander of the Army’s V Corps, has been removed from command, nearly two months before his time on the job would have naturally wrapped up, though the circumstances surrounding his removal remain unclear. V Corps is responsible for overseeing U.S. Army forces and coordinating operations across Europe. Partially based in Poland, the corps has taken on an increasingly prominent role since russia's invasion of Ukraine, helping coordinate U.S. support for Kyiv and managing the American military footprint along NATO's frontlines. https://abcnews.com/Politics/top-us-general-europe-abruptly-removed-command/story?id=135461842

The U.S. Senate easily passed sweeping russia sanctions legislation on Friday, advancing a long-delayed measure backed by late Senator Lindsey Graham and setting the stage for consideration by the House of Representatives within weeks. It also includes expanded sanctions on Iran sought by President Donald Trump as lawmakers pushed for a vote on the measure well over a year since it was introduced in 2025. The Senate's Republican leaders had not brought the bill up because of resistance from Trump, who had kept decisions on sanctions at the White House, not Congress, since starting his second term in January 2025. The Senate voted 86-11 to pass the "Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning russia and Iran Act of 2026," to sanction russian officials and authorize stiff tariffs on China, India and other countries to reduce their dependence on russian oil and gas. However, broad support may not be enough to secure House passage, with some lawmakers and industries wary that new tariff powers for Trump could raise costs for U.S. importers and consumers while exposing Republicans to political blowback, writes Reuters. https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/sweeping-russia-energy-sanctions-head-toward-us-senate-passage-2026-08-07/

The US State Department has officially approved a large-scale resale of American weapons from Turkish military stocks to Ukraine. Turkey is transferring 12 M270 MLRS launchers, 70 M39 ATACMS ballistic missiles and 2,524 unguided 227-mm M26 rockets with cluster warheads. In addition, the Ukrainian artillery will receive 47,000 M509A1 203-mm cluster shells, which are suited for the Soviet-style 2S7 "Pion" heavy self-propelled guns. https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CREC-2026-08-06/pdf/CREC-2026-08-06.pdf

All of these weapons are considered outdated, and given the range of their use and small amount of them, they will certainly cause significant damage to the russians at the front, but Ukraine will not gain any strategic advantage.

At night, Odesa was under heavy russian shelling - residential buildings in several areas of the city were destroyed. 11 missiles and 100 UAVs were fired at Odesa overnight, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said. In parts of Odesa and the Odesa region, the power went out and there are problems with water and mobile communications.

Also on Sunday morning, August 9, the russian military struck a high-rise building in Kharkiv with a drone - three people were killed and 37 injured.
https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cy45wd8gv9go

The Kromberg & Schubert Zhytomyr enterprise was also attacked, as a result of which production facilities and infrastructure received significant damage and large-scale destruction. Kromberg & Schubert Zhytomyr is a civilian manufacturing enterprise with 100% German investments, which has been operating in the Zhytomyr region for 11 years and provides jobs for about 3,500 people. It produced electrical on-board cable systems for world-class cars. Due to the significant level of damage, the enterprise was forced to temporarily suspend work for an indefinite period. https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=1594831852653907&set=a.494028286067608

russian President Vladimir putin could try to test NATO’s resolve with a limited assault on an allied country in the next few years, according to new U.S. intelligence reports that posit possible scenarios ranging from a cyberattack to a small-scale land incursion. The assessments, described by U.S. officials, come amid a shortfall in certain critical munitions that the military would need to confront russia or China in a potential future war. The U.S. has severely degraded its stockpile of these weapons because of transfers to Ukraine after russia’s invasion, as well as the U.S. conflict with Iran. Stockpiles at risk include long-range Precision Strike Missiles and Army Tactical Missile Systems, as well as short-range Stinger surface-to-air missiles, other officials said. The U.S. had previously assessed that putin wouldn’t provoke a North Atlantic Treaty Organization country while he is still fighting in Ukraine. But that assessment changed earlier this year, the U.S. officials said, as putin is squeezed in Ukraine and under pressure at home to secure a victory. https://www.wsj.com/world/europe/u-s-intel-finds-putin-could-test-natos-resolve-with-limited-incursion-e3b02e2c

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that putin cannot yet find victory in this war. "Unfortunately, we must recognize and understand what is happening. He is thinking about mobilization. He is thinking about how to deceive his people. To carry out a mass mobilization without announcing it. To make some shadow contracts, block the borders, etc." https://sud.ua/uk/news/ukraine/368812-volodymyr-zelenskyi-putin-dumaie-zakryty-kordony-ta-provesty-masovu-mobilizatsiiu

Will putin really treat russians the same way Ukrainians are treated in Ukraine? What a scoundrel this putin is!

On the night of August 11, russian forces attacked Kyiv and Zaporizhia. Six people were killed and 19 wounded in Zaporizhia. In Kyiv, missiles hit a children's hospital during the attack, but the children and doctors were in shelter. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c4gj8p4lxw5o

We may learn information about all or some of the other hits later. It seems like everything is so bad that Ukraine has stopped reporting how many missiles russia fired during attacks, as it continues to appeal to allies to help strengthen its air defenses. While the Air Defense Forces said 98 of 120 russian drones were downed overnight, it omitted data on the number of missiles fired. That came days after it ceased reporting interceptions of ballistic missiles, following an attack last week in which Ukraine failed to stop any of 28 projectiles.

Ukraine is hitting back, targeting oil refineries and logistics warehouses deep inside russia including those of e-commerce giant Wildberries, in a campaign aimed at inflicting economic damage and bringing the war closer to ordinary russians. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-08-11/ukraine-stops-reporting-russia-missile-data-as-defenses-struggle?srnd=phx-politics

I don't know how things are in russia, but in Kyiv it's sad to see half-empty shelves in stores of large chains whose warehouses were burned during the recent russian missile attacks. https://kurs.com.ua/novost/1473588-v-supermarketah-pereboi-s-postavkami-posle-atak-rf-riteileri-predupredili-o-podorozhanii-produktov

According to the authorities, the exhumation of the remains of Colonel Yevhen Konovalets at the Crosswijk cemetery in Rotterdam should probably distract me and other Ukrainians from these sad thoughts. The ashes of the Ukrainian military and political figure are planned to be returned to Ukraine. The organizational issues regarding the exhumation and transportation of the remains were decided on the instructions of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. Kyrylo Budanov and the team of the President's Office, Andriy Sybiga and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs joined the work. https://www.president.gov.ua/news/polkovnik-yevgen-konovalec-povertayetsya-dodomu-v-ukrayinu-u-105773

I don't know how expedient it is to do this right now, but the money spent on this could, for example, be directed to the repair of a children's hospital or preparation for a difficult winter.

Today, Kyiv was attacked twice in one day by russian jet drones. Explosions were heard in different parts of the city. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/clyep62lleeo

But that didn't stop me from going to a meeting in the city center. We were alone in a restaurant at lunchtime, and not because of the air raid alert. People hardly pay attention to either the sirens or the explosions anymore. Well, maybe everyone who is afraid is in shelters at this time, and everyone else is just walking and driving around the streets and going about their business.

On the night and morning of August 12, the russians carried out another massive attack on the territory of Ukraine. According to the Air Force, the enemy used a ballistic missile, Kh-31P and Kh-35 guided missiles, as well as 138 attack drones. Near Kyiv, fires in warehouses that were hit during the previous attack were finally extinguished. Helicopters were also involved in the extinguishing, the sound of which could be heard even in Kyiv. https://www.rbc.ua/rus/news/kiy-viglyad-mayut-skladi-kiyivshchini-pislya-1786552227.html

Instead, the Ukrainian attack on Novorossiysk in southwestern russia on August 12 was one of the largest ever for the city. The strikes targeted facilities that are important for russian exports, oil infrastructure, and the Russian Black Sea Fleet. https://24tv.ua/ataka-novorosiysk-12-serpnya-yaki-vazhlivi-obyekti-bulo-urazheno_n3122310

Also, as a result of a drone strike on August 11, about 70 thousand square meters of the Wildberries marketplace warehouse burned down in the Voronezh region. Interestingly, only the warehouses of this network are being attacked, without touching competitors, which is already giving rise to various rumors about such selectivity. https://apostrophe.ua/world/wildberries-u-voronezkij-oblasti-vtrativ-desjatki-tisjach-kvadrativ-pislja-ataki-suputnikovi-kadri.html

russia does not make exceptions for any particular network and attacks the warehouses of all of them. Another large construction supermarket was destroyed in Zaporizhia. https://spravzhne.media/ukr/war/1786510573-okupanti-obstrilyali-tts-u-zaporizhzhi-vinikla-masshtabna-pozhezha

In Novovolynsk, Volyn, a man with a knife attacked two servicemen of the Volodymyr district mobilization center. One of them was seriously injured and hospitalized. https://pravdatutnews.com/society/2026/08/12/83955-na-volyni-cholovik-poranyv-nozhem-dvoh-viyskovyh-tck

In Zhytomyr region, a 46-year-old man died in the premises of a mobilization center after passing a military medical commission, which recognized him as fit for military service. According to the mother, her son Andriy Stesyuk had suffered from serious illnesses for over 19 years, he had also been disabled for about 10 years, weighed almost 200 kilograms and was constantly taking medication. An official investigation has been appointed into the death, which should establish all the circumstances of the incident. https://tsn.ua/ukrayina/miy-syn-ne-buv-ukhyliantom-maty-cholovika-iakyy-pomer-u-ttsk-rozpovila-svoiu-versiiu-podiy-3147089.html

The National Police is intensifying investigative work to prevent abuse in the activities of mobilization centers, as well as during the registration and adoption of decisions by military medical commissions. In particular, 76 heads of mobilization centers at various levels were informed of the suspicion, the circumstances of the possible illegal booking of almost 2.5 thousand conscripts are being checked, and 6.5 thousand illegal decisions of the Military Medical Commission have been canceled, Acting Head of the National Police Maksym Tsutskiridze told Ukrinform. https://www.ukrinform.ua/rubric-society/4153122-policia-povidomila-pro-pidozru-76-kerivnikam-tck-riznogo-rivna-cuckiridze.html

That's great, but the police only prosecute doctors when they declare people unfit, not when they declare sick people fit.

Last week, a meeting was held in the Kremlin, at which the mobilization plan by the end of the year was first made public. The army is asking for 800 thousand. Some consider such plans unrealistic, although in one form or another, mobilization will still be carried out, and an additional 300-500 thousand russian Armed Forces will receive. However, if mobilization in the russian Federation turns out to be inevitable, Ukraine will have to respond in kind - also mobilize no less citizens, writes Focus. https://focus.ua/uk/eksklyuzivy/764086-mobilizaciya-v-ukrajini-2026-kogo-prizvut-i-de-shukayut-rezervi-dlya-zsu-fokus?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=kurs_com_ua&utm_campaign=you_can_get_more

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced a total inspection of all "critically important" enterprises. Even defense ones, while even for ammunition manufacturers they left restrictions: only up to 50% of the staff can be reserved.

At the same time, our country has a very large mobilization reserve, which has never been used for all these years. These are military and security forces pensioners who have legally retired before the age of 60, but are still quite fit for service due to age and health. It would also be possible to cancel the reservation of artists and all those who are not related to the army and critical infrastructure. Even in the bureaucratic apparatus of the army and the rear units, it would be possible to conduct an audit and replace men in offices with women, not to mention reviewing the feasibility of such a large number of non-combat units in general.

But it is probably better to continue to catch people on the streets, since they will either pay a bribe to be released or will be sent to the front despite their physical condition, lack of motivation and training. Since those who catch people are not responsible for either violating the law or for the quality of recruits, which directly worsens defense capabilities.

After two days of unusual silence, when not only explosions but also air raid sirens were not heard in Kyiv, air raids continued all night and into the morning. I heard many explosions, but not very close. I don't know exactly where the hits were, but some roads were impassable, and the media wrote about the destruction of the book market and the damage to the publishing house nearby.

Strikes were reported elsewhere in the country, including in Sumy, Donetsk and Kherson. Several people have reportedly been killed in both russia and Ukraine following the attacks.

The russians also attacked PJSC "ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih" - the largest enterprise in the mining and metallurgical complex of Ukraine. As a result of the missile strike, 2 people were killed, and the production processes of the plant were partially stopped, the press service of the plant reported. https://ukranews.com/ua/news/1168917-rf-atakuvala-najbilshyj-metalurgijnyj-zavod-robota-chastkovo-zupynena-ye-zagybli

Although the Air Force has stopped publishing statistics on airstrikes, the president is now doing so. Zelensky said that over the past week, the russians have fired more than 1,550 strike drones, nearly 1,560 aerial bombs, and 62 missiles at Ukrainian cities and communities. Most of them are ballistic missiles of various types. There is no mention of any shooting downs at this time. https://unn.ua/news/za-tyzhden-rf-vypustyla-po-ukraini-1550-bpla-maizhe-1560-aviabomb-ta-62-rakety-zelenskyi

russia's defence ministry claims they faced the "largest-scale attack" by Ukraine in 2026, shooting down 822 drones overnight. Ukraine also hit another warehouse belonging to russian online retailer Wildberries - the defence ministry says it believes it has disabled the warehouse, which it says is the company's largest. https://www.bbc.com/news/live/c61k110gny00t
https://edition.cnn.com/2026/08/15/europe/russia-moscow-ukraine-air-attack-intl

In Odesa, reports are being made of a jet drone being hit and a fire in a construction supermarket. https://www.rbc.ua/rus/news/rosiya-atakuvala-peredmistya-odesi-merezhi-1786882298.html

So the mutual destruction of supermarkets continues.

Ukraine also struck an industrial enterprise in the Samara region. This is TsSKB-Progress, which is involved in the deployment of the russian analogue of the Starlink satellite system. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cy8ew3pvwzjo

russian troops left the territory of the Dnipropetrovsk region, transferring reserves to the Donetsk region. https://unn.ua/news/viiska-rf-tymchasovo-vyishly-z-dnipropetrovskoi-oblasti-zvynuvachuiut-henshtab

President Volodymyr Zelensky has been unable to fill the vacancy for Ukraine's ambassador to the United States for several weeks and still has no candidate capable of representing Kyiv in Donald Trump's administration, Politico reports. https://www.politico.eu/article/job-volodymyr-zelenskyy-ukraine-envoy-donald-trump-washington-us/

The timing is extremely unfavorable for Kyiv: journalists are recording signs that the White House may soon try to restart the peace track. In this case, the material says, a diplomat in Washington must have the political weight to reach agreements, a mandate to speak on behalf of the president, the skills to navigate an administration with rapidly changing policies - and at the same time a lobbying resource in Congress.

In parallel, decisions are being made on weapons, air defense, logistics and intelligence sharing - and it is here that Ukraine may find itself without an influential politician who would defend its position, as well as without a representative in shaping the conditions for the resumption of negotiations.

The most likely scenario, which is being voiced in parliament, is to keep the position vacant until the November congressional elections.
