You know, lately I haven't been rushing to conclusions. Besides, I have not been and do not intend to go to the protests to assess their scale and listen to the people there. I am paranoid and cannot stand crowds of people. Besides, the risks of being mobilized or simply getting hit on the head with a police baton are too great. Provocations are also possible, I am sure that the russians are already thinking about how to use this to their advantage.

As for the girl and her father, I only gave advice and helped her write a complaint, everything else she did herself when she went there. She is a budding lawyer and despite the enormous stress, this is very good practice for her. I would be proud of such a daughter, although my heart would break to see her crying and saying that she has no one to turn to in this city except me. I told her that God sends us to each other in such circumstances and we cannot help but help. She is a good person and I hope that in the future she will not forget that you need to help people not only when they can pay you.

After reading your replies, it occurs to me that Ukrainians, who have been living under the threat of death every day for three and a half years, are probably not easily intimidated by their government. It sounds as if the most certain risk of death is from being conscripted, not from being blown apart by a Russian missile or drone. ??

This is a very complicated question. Firstly, people get used to everything. Secondly, all people are different and react differently. Some people are afraid of missiles and drones, but most people don't pay any more attention to them than they do to cars on the road, any one of which could theoretically run out onto the pavement and kill you. I think it's a light version of what soldiers on the front lines feel, constantly under fire. Or when a miner goes underground, realizing that a gas explosion or rock collapse could occur.

As for the fear of mobilization, it is probably not so much the fear of death at the front, because statistics say that not everyone dies, but a protest against the attitude and treatment of people as animals or slaves. Agree, if the army meets you like this, then what to expect next? Well, probably the main thing is that for some it is a one-way ticket, while for others war is not their business. The defense of the country should be a common cause, not only the duty of the poor. Although for the rich the authorities have come up with sanctions that are introduced without a fair trial and are actually a tool to take away someone else's property, under the pretext of martial law.

That touched my heart. You are a wise, kind, caring and generous person, Wlad.

But it always prevented me from being rich)

In fact, I only pay my debts, remembering all the wonderful people who helped and supported me throughout my life. I too was once young and helpless, and in the same way a lawyer once helped my father first and then helped me become a lawyer. It was a worthy example and I always looked up to him. If we don't bring something good into the world, only evil will remain in it. Do we want our children to live in such a world? I hope that in the pursuit of developing AI weapons, humanity will not make the world described in Philip K. Dick's novel "Second Variety" a reality.

I wonder if the protests will continue over the weekend. It seems like they could become protests against the government in general. It's remarkable how quickly the world media is changing their minds. Just two years ago, they were making a hero out of Zelensky and putting his photo on the front page of the Times, and now they're competing to "expose" the essence of his regime.

Jamie Dettmer, opinion editor and a foreign affairs columnist at POLITICO Europe wrote: as a democratic state, Ukraine is under assault from two sources. Its first and most obvious adversary is Moscow, which has long wanted to return the country to the days of being a Kremlin plaything, a mere russian satellite. But arguably there’s another insidious and corrosive adversary from within — the country’s own semi-autocratic leadership. https://www.politico.eu/article/ukraine-corruption-protests-war-volodymyr-zelenskyy/

Owen Matthews from The Telegraph wrote that for Ukraine’s sake, Zelensky must now step aside. The inspirational leader is no longer part of the solution to ending the conflict with russia. He is now part of the problem. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/07/24/zelensky-must-go-for-sake-of-ukraine/

However, still few people talk about the fact that Zelensky's election as president was one of the main reasons for russia's attack. putin could not help but take advantage of this opportunity.

In any case, the unwillingness or inability of the Ukrainian authorities to carry out reforms has already led to a reduction in international aid. Ukraine will receive less money than planned, 3 billion instead of 4.5 billion euros in the fourth tranche this year under the Ukraine Facility aid program, due to the failure to implement three of the 16 reforms required for the full tranche, European Commission spokesman Guillaume Mercier said. https://www.ukrinform.ua/rubric-economy/4018918-evrokomisia-cetvertij-trans-ukraine-facility-urizut-tri-reformi-ne-vikonani.html

On July 25, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky once again extended martial law and general mobilization in Ukraine for another 90 days, until November 5, 2025.

The Starlink satellite internet network, developed by SpaceX, has resumed operations after a major outage. The problem lasted for more than two hours and affected users in various countries, including the military in Ukraine. This is yet another reminder of the critical vulnerability and dependence of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on satellite internet.

A previously unreported order by Elon Musk to cut satellite communications over a portion of Ukraine disrupted a counteroffensive by Kyiv in the autumn of 2022. https://www.reuters.com/investigations/musk-ordered-shutdown-starlink-satellite-service-ukraine-retook-territory-russia-2025-07-25/

I hope that while the media is exposing Zelensky's corruption, they will keep reminding readers of the even greater corruption of the one they are fighting in Russia. I wouldn't bet on it, though.
Probably the only way to get Zelensky out of office is for the West to make his leaving a condition for further aid.

Globally, the problem is not Zelensky or putin themselves, but those who elect them. I am saddened by the fact that the majority demand exactly those like Zelensky and putin. It seems that voters are not at all interested in the personal and professional qualities of those to whom they trust their fate and the fate of their country. That is why their successors can be even worse, because society has also degraded during their reign. As one proverb says, a girl has no sex because she has pimples, she has pimples because she has no sex...

Indeed.

This has been a problem since antiquity, though of course rudimentary democracy or republics existed only in a few places and only for some of the people. But even among the powerful and educated elites, it wasn’t uncommon for budding tyrants to promise the moon and be elevated to leader, or as an exigency in wartime, or to bring their thugs to the legislature to cow them into submission.

I particularly like the ancient practice of some Nordic societies in which freemen would assemble to decide issues and wore their arms in case anyone attempted to seize power by subjugating the assembly.

Today many people don’t pay attention to politics at all, and many others don’t until the last minute, and then often make their choice only on how much money they think the candidate will bring them, or whether they like the (usually) manufactured personality of the candidate (“I’d like to have a beer with him”), or who their friends voted for. They neglect entirely issues of good governance and of possible tyranny vs. freedom.

The russian tactic of concentrating a large number of drones and missiles, attacking one place, has significantly increased the effectiveness of their attacks. Yesterday, such an attack was carried out on the Dnipro and the region. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c5yl3e63kn0o?xtor=AL-73-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bukr%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bukrainian%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D

At Monday’s meeting of Ukraine allies, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said he agreed with the administration that Berlin would “contribute to providing” five Patriots, without elaborating. Berlin has already given Ukraine three systems and is in talks with Washington about sending more and getting replacements, officials said. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/07/26/europe-ukraine-us-weapons-deal/

This is good, but still too little considering the size of Ukraine. Moreover, the Patriots still have nothing to oppose the thousands of cheap drones that have become the main weapon recently.

Satellite imagery shows that construction has sharply accelerated at the site in southern russia. Dozens of new buildings, including what experts believe to be new dormitories and production facilities, have been rapidly taking shape since the winter snow melted this year. Alabuga, which has been churning out Iranian-designed Shahed drones for almost three years, has now fully shifted from being an Iranian franchise to a fully localized production line. The expansion is happening so quickly that experts say the site’s end goal may be to mass-produce drones for global export. In December CNN reported that Alabuga had produced more than 5,700 Shahed drones between January and September 2024, over double the number it produced in the whole of 2023. The facility was aiming for 10,000 Gerbera decoy drones in 2024, according to Ukrainian defense intelligence sources. https://edition.cnn.com/2025/07/25/europe/russia-secretive-drone-factory-rapid-expansion-intl

Ukraine is also increasing drone production, but in much smaller quantities, which is difficult to explain given the crazy money provided to the Ukrainian authorities by the West and the absence of sanctions restrictions. We should also not forget about the different proportions of fuel and explosives in the mass of Ukrainian and russian drones. The distance for russian drones is much smaller, so they equip their drones with a large amount of explosives, while Ukrainian drones have to cover a distance several times greater and carry a much smaller explosive charge. Thus, even when Ukrainian drones hit something, they cause little damage. For example, in order to destroy the russian factory in Alabua, dozens of drones are needed to hit it simultaneously, which are not available.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s real deficit to cover all military and budget expenses, which must be covered by foreign aid, is about $90 billion annually in 2025-2026. In 2024, defense and security spending was about $95 billion, in 2025, it will most likely increase to $100-105 billion, and in 2026, according to the new Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal, the need may reach $120 billion.

Other state budget needs amount to about $42 billion, while through taxes, fees, dividends, and financing from the National Bank’s profits, Ukraine will be able to collect about $55 billion in 2025.

That is, we have a gap of about $142 billion minus $55 billion — this is much more than the figure for the financial deficit. https://biz.nv.ua/ukr/finance/deficit-finansuvannya-ukrajini-krajini-ne-vistachatime-mayzhe-100-mlrd-dolariv-shchoroku-50532616.html

President Volodymyr Zelensky’s anticorruption policies have already provoked Ukraine’s first antigovernment protests since the russian invasion in 2022. Now, it seems, they may cost the country a portion of its foreign aid from the European Union, in a clear rebuke from the bloc, once a staunch ally.

The European Union said on Friday that it would withhold 1.5 billion euros, or $1.7 billion, from an overall fund of 4.5 billion euros whose disbursement is dependent on achieving good governance standards and that can’t be used  for military purchases. The decision is not final, however, and the funding can be restored if Ukraine meets certain benchmarks.

The E.U.’s decision capped a tumultuous week for Mr. Zelensky, who first pushed a measure through Parliament that stripped the independence of two anticorruption agencies, raising protests from foreign leaders as well as the Ukrainian people.

He then reversed course, submitting a new bill to Parliament to restore the agencies’ independence. That calmed the street protests, but could not head off the E.U.’s aid cut, which had already been decided on the basis of longstanding guidelines.

Critics in Ukraine have complained about the Zelensky government’s steady accretion of power under martial law, with investigations targeting journalists, activists and opposition politicians. His administration has sidelined elected mayors and governors in many regions in favor of military administrators.

Foreign allies are divided on those steps, with some saying they are needed to keep a firm hand on the country in wartime while others dismiss them as a raw power grab.

Maybe I'm connecting dots that don't connect, but "Ukraine is also increasing drone production, but in much smaller quantities, which is difficult to explain given the crazy money provided to the Ukrainian authorities by the West" combined with Z's so-called "reform" of the NABU would definitely seem to be connected on a prima facie basis. It's hard to blame the EU for not wanting a big portion of their tax dollars going to the "finder's fee" extracted by the well-connected in Ukraine. Short of cutting off funding until a verifiable audit trail is established, it's hard to know how to overcome this.

On July 31, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on the restoration of the powers of the NABU and the SAPO, introduced by Volodymyr Zelensky. Today, the President also signed this document. European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen published a joint statement in support of the adoption of the law on the NABU and the SAPO. https://sud.ua/uk/news/ukraine/337394-lidery-es-privetstvovali-podpisanie-zelenskim-zakona-o-vosstanovlenii-nezavisimosti-nabu-i-sap

This story of the fight between corrupt officials and anti-corruption officials reminded me of an old story about how a Jew came to a rabbi complaining about how hard it was for him to live in a small house with several children and parents. There was so little space that he and his wife were even forced to sleep on the floor. The rabbi advised him to buy a goat that was to live with them in that house. The Jew was shocked, but trusted the rabbi's wisdom. A month later, he came to the rabbi again in tears, saying that life with the goat had now become completely unbearable and he was already spending half the night outside, unable to sleep inside. To this, the rabbi advised him to sell the goat. A day later, the happy Jew ran to the rabbi and began to thank him, saying that he had not slept so well and peacefully in the house for a long time and his life had become even better than it was before buying the goat.

A great victory for wise rulers. The satisfied protesters went home, the authorities are now not responsible for corruption and the fight against it, and one can only guess how many important pieces of evidence disappeared and how many secret criminal proceedings against top corrupt officials were revealed during the chaos with subordination.

The head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP), Oleksandr Klymenko, said that attempts by politicians, civil servants and law enforcement officials to silence bodies like his will continue, even after the independence was restored by the adoption of a law by the Verkhovna Rada on Thursday. He said this in interviews with The Times and the Financial Times.

Tonight was another very noisy night. Drones flew overhead in swarms all night, and cruise missiles arrived in the morning. Fifteen people have been killed and 145 others have been wounded in a barrage of russian drones and missiles that struck several districts of Kyiv and brought down an apartment block overnight, officials have said. russia launched 309 drones and eight cruise missiles during the night, according to Ukraine's air force. And although officials say air defences did manage to destroy many of them, there were numerous hits including from cruise missiles.
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ce930z8g9mvo

Yuriy Ignat, head of the communications department of the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, explained that this time the russians launched missiles from the Kursk region (russian Federation) and this is not far from Kyiv.

"That is, there is quite little time for detection and response. Another feature that the russians use is ultra-low altitudes and terrain. The missile presses low to the ground and becomes hardly noticeable to our air defense. Thus, the enemy is using these missiles not for the first time. And today only three out of 8 managed to hit," he concluded.
https://glavred.net/war/pochemu-ne-udaetsya-sbivat-vse-rakety-iskander-k-ignat-nazval-realnuyu-prichinu-10686083.html?utm_source=ukrnet_news

During the recent air attacks on Ukraine, and in particular on Kyiv, russia began using a new type of strike drones - the Shahed jets. The Shahed jet is actually an Iranian kamikaze drone manufactured by HESA - Shahed-238, analogues of which russia began to produce in January 2025. Their speed can exceed 500 km/h, and in terms of flight parameters they resemble cruise missiles. Such drones also have a longer flight range, which can reach 2,500 km. Speed and maneuverability make their detection and interception much more difficult.

This drone is virtually unreachable for Ukrainian interceptor drones, helicopters, light aircraft and mobile fire groups and requires the development of new technologies for successful interception. If a drone flies at an altitude of 9 km, only jet aircraft or large anti-aircraft missile systems can shoot it down.
https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c3dpx5143exo

Closer to the front line, the russians also actively use aerial bombs. On July 28, the russians dropped them on a penal colony in Zaporizhia Oblast and a maternity hospital in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, where dozens of people were killed and injured. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cp8zmgp0zkko

russia’s summer offensive is turning into an escalating crisis for Ukraine CNN journalists believe. The accumulative effect of a Ukrainian manpower crisis, the turbulence of Kyiv’s relationship with the Trump White House, and uncertain supplies of weaponry, are a perfect storm that has broken in the face of the vigor and persistence of a russian summer offensive, whose progress is no longer incremental but is reshaping the conflict and bringing putin closer to some of his goals fast. https://edition.cnn.com/2025/07/30/europe/russias-summer-offensive-ukraine-analysis-latam-intl

The russian Defense Ministry announced the alleged capture of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region. The Armed Forces of Ukraine denied this, calling the statement another lie. But only a few ruins remain of the city. https://www.dw.com/uk/rf-zaavila-pro-zahoplenna-casovogo-aru-ukraina-sprostovue/a-73477648?maca=ukr-rss-ukrnet-ukr-all-3816-xml

There is good news too. Drones of the Security Service of Ukraine attacked a radio electronics plant in Penza, which works for the russian military-industrial complex. The Radio Plant, which is part of the Rostec corporation, produces automatic combat control systems for various branches of the russian armed forces, including air defense, artillery, as well as mobile command posts based on armored vehicles and modern means of communication. https://babel.ua/news/120164-dzherela-babelya-droni-sbu-atakuvali-rosiyskiy-zavod-radioelektroniki

I’m happy to see that Trump is finally pushing back on the bellicose statements from Moscow threatening nuclear war, in this case from Medvedev. Whether this particular escalatory approach is wise or not remains to be seen. It tends to give the Kremlin an excuse for their position.

Widely reported (quote below from USA Today):

"Based on the highly provocative statements" of Russian spokesperson Dmitry Medvedev, "I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

"Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances," he said.

The submarine moves come after social media exchanges between Trump and Medvedev escalated hours earlier – Trump said Medvedev should "watch his words" in a midnight post, and Medvedev threateningly referenced the Soviet Union's "dead hand" doomsday nuclear system.

“We just have to be careful," Trump told reporters. "A threat was made by a former president of Russia, and we're going to protect our people.”

Last night on the radio I listened to what the russians are being fed by their official propaganda. No mention of drone and missile attacks, but bravado about successes on the front. In addition to the fact that for the majority of the population additional obstacles have been created to obtain a different point of view and they do not know any other language except russian, in reality few russians are interested in seeking the truth, because no one wants to know that they are an accomplice in all the crimes that russia is committing.

Similarly, few of those Ukrainians who voted for Zelensky and his party accept responsibility for the consequences of their actions. Just as most of those who work in the government are afraid that in the event of a change of power they will have to be personally responsible for the crimes of the regime in which they participated. After all, now it is possible to justify restrictions and violations of human rights with martial law, but after the war is over they will no longer be able to hide their crimes. The only way not to be held accountable will be to maintain power in the form of a dictatorship. This is very reminiscent of what is happening in russia, isn't it?

But it seems that preparations for a change of power in one way or another are already in full swing in Ukraine. The PR of Zaluzhny, who gave a number of interviews with what can be called a pre-election program, as well as his new image, not connected with the army, is indicative. Vogue magazine is not something most people associate with the army. https://vogue.ua/article/leaders/valeriy-zaluzhniy-pro-koreni-identichnosti-silu-yednosti-y-naygolovnishi-istorichni-uroki-dlya-ukrajinciv-60251.html

The reaction of women, who are consistently delighted with Zaluzhny's new image, demonstrates that his PR people are doing everything right, and women are his main target audience. Especially since there are many more Ukrainian women than men, and voting will most likely be complicated for many men because they will be wanted due to mobilization and will not risk appearing at polling stations.

Mobilization in Ukraine is proceeding according to plan and is 90% going absolutely normally. People are receiving summonses and are consciously going to serve. This was reported by Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal in an interview with "BBC. Ukraine" on Wednesday, July 30. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cyvn7668v1do

Perhaps one shouldn't have expected other words from a government representative, but not a single day goes by without news about how the mobilization is going.

On Wednesday, July 30, a man died after falling from a bridge in Mykolaiv while fleeing from law enforcement officers and employees of the mobilization center. https://glavred.net/ukraine/v-nikolaeve-muzhchina-prygnul-s-mosta-ubegaya-ot-sotrudnikov-tck-10685810.html?utm_source=ukrnet_news

A 65-year-old resident of Cherkasy region tried to restore justice and hold accountable the employees of the mobilization center who caused significant harm to his health, but the police ignored his application, and the court refused due to his violation of the deadline for filing a complaint.

He was beaten, then pushed into a car and forcibly taken to the mobilization center building, where he was held until his identity and real age, 65 years old, were determined (mobilization in Ukraine is possible up to 60 years old).

The next day after returning home, he felt unwell and went to a local hospital, where he was diagnosed with a closed head injury, concussion, a head wound, a chest contusion, and a cervical spine injury.

He appealed to the court a month later, but the courts refused to accept the complaint, referring to the fact that the reasons given by the complainant for missing the deadline cannot be grounds for renewing the deadline, because the reference to illness before filing a complaint about a crime and to the police after the expiration of the deadline for appealing inaction is not a valid reason for missing the 10-day deadline established by the Criminal Procedure Code. https://sud.ua/uk/news/publication/337416-pensionera-busifitsirovali-i-izbili-sotrudniki-ttsk-a-politsiya-otkazalas-registrirovat-ugolovnoe-proizvodstvo-chto-reshil-sud

On the evening of August 1, a crowd gathered near the stadium in Vinnytsia and demanded the release of men who had been gathered there for mobilization. The people were pushed back by police. Some videos from the scene show evidence of the use of tear gas. The number of police officers is impressive. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cq87k0z9evjo
