Both parties will vigorously support Ukraine militarily, and I think having any president who's mind is operating will be a step up from rule by whatever committee has been making decisions the past couple of years. I would include both Trump or Harris as a step forward in pursuing bold enough action to bring this to a resolution. The half-measures of the recent past are not getting any results other than continuing slaughter.

In general I agree with you, but the point of view is very dependent on the beholder. For example, commander-in-chief Col Gen Oleksandr Syrsky is full of optimism, as befits a military man. However, he does not hide that two and half years into full-scale onslaught, the russians are much better resourced. They have more of everything: tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, soldiers. Their original 100,000-strong invasion force has grown to 520,000, he said, with a goal by the end of 2024 of 690,000 men.
“When it comes to equipment, there is a ratio of 1:2 or 1:3 in their favour,” he said. Since 2022 the number of russian tanks has “doubled” – from 1,700 to 3,500. Artillery systems have tripled, and armoured personnel carriers gone up from 4,500 to 8,900. “The enemy has a significant advantage in force and resources,” Syrskyi said. “The Kremlin’s casualties were “three times” higher than Ukraine’s”
https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/jul/24/i-know-we-will-win-and-how-ukraines-top-general-on-turning-the-tables-against-russia

This is already closer to reality than the 1 to 8 that the president spoke about earlier, but it still does not take into account the different quality of the soldiers in the army, which changes dynamically and is not in favor of Ukraine. Maybe I sound too pessimistic, but I just look at the map and see who is successful regardless of Western help. In general, it is noticeable that many career officers feel better than ever and will obviously be sad if the war ends quickly.

Wake up to threat of world war, Ukraine envoy tells West. https://www.thetimes.com/world/russia-ukraine-war/article/wake-up-to-threat-of-world-war-ukraine-envoy-tells-west-h28qtncx0

Zaluzhny’s first public speech as ambassador to the UK took place on the RUSI Land Warfare Conference, but unfortunately there is nothing about this on the official website of the embassy https://uk.mfa.gov.ua/en and only a paid version of the article in the Telegraph. When I said that Ukraine, which used the war as a pretext to limit the rights and freedoms of citizens, could become an example for democracies, it was confirmed in the words of Zaluzhny: "Society must agree to temporarily give up a range of freedoms for the sake of survival. Modern wars, unfortunately, are total. They require the efforts not only of the army, but also of society as a whole".

It is obvious that Zaluzhny will focus on the military side, but it is equally important to remember that for 142 thousand Ukrainian refugees in the UK their visas will expire next year, and their support has already cost more than 2.6 billion dollars. Therefore, in addition to military assistance, the ambassador needs to look for ways to help refugees in the context of the shortage of money that Labor faced when it came to power. https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/07/18/zaluzhnys-new-ambassador-role-comes-at-critical-moment-for-ukraines-supporters-a85755

Ukraine said on Monday it had reached an agreement in principle with a group of creditors to restructure $20 billion of international bonds, bringing the war-torn country closer to an unprecedented debt rework. Ukraine's announcement comes just over a week before a two-year debt suspension agreement struck in 2022 is due to run out and marks the first time a country has embarked on a debt restructuring during a full-scale war. https://www.reuters.com/markets/rates-bonds/ukraine-reaches-preliminary-deal-with-bondholder-group-20-bln-debt-restructure-2024-07-22/

For the first time during the full-scale war and for the first time in the last eight years, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine visited China. Dmytro Kuleba was on a three-day visit at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The main topic of discussion was the search for ways to stop russian aggression and China's possible role in achieving a sustainable peace. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cnd08lj83p9o

Wang Yi noted that the crisis in Ukraine has entered its third year, and the conflict is still ongoing and there are risks of escalation and spillover. China has always been firmly committed to promoting a political solution to the crisis. President Xi Jinping proposed the "Four Principles" and provided important guidelines for it. On this basis, China and Brazil jointly issued a "six-point consensus" covering the "three principles" of conflict management, the "three elements" of peace negotiations, the "three issues" of humanitarian protection, and the prevention of nuclear weapons. Risks and ensuring the stability of the production and supply chain is the greatest common denominator of the international community and has received widespread feedback and support. China believes that the resolution of all conflicts must ultimately return to the negotiating table.

Kuleba noted that Ukraine attaches great importance to China's opinion and carefully studied the "six-point consensus" reached by China and Brazil on the political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. Ukraine is willing and ready for dialogue and negotiations with russia.

Today I woke up again with the feeling that there was a heavy stone lying on my chest. Perhaps this is just a sign that it will rain, but I can’t count on activity today. Searching for a job on the websites of international organizations does not lead to success. If we discard vacancies that require official employment or travel in Ukraine, then there are few positions left that require experience in similar positions.

I can't figure out the reason for my changing states, but today I woke up without this stone on my chest. Maybe it's the weather changes or, as they wrote in the news yesterday, the deterioration of air quality in Kyiv https://ukranews.com/ua/news/1022093-povitrya. So today I felt surprisingly good and even rode my bicycle more than usual. Also, the electricity was not turned off all day today. The Minister of Energy said that a repaired power unit of the nuclear power plant was connected to the power grid https://weukraine.tv/exclusive/halushchenko-sohodni-pusk-atomnoho-bloka-vidchula-vsja-ukrajina-zavtra-situatsija-bude-shche-krashchoju/

Maryna finished another business course, although, according to her, all such courses say the same thing, and she herself could teach at such courses.

As always, turning on the radio on schedule in recent days, I did not expect to hear Colin G3ZAF, but suddenly I heard him loud. We barely had time to exchange greetings when the propagation suddenly closed. Later, he went out by car and tried to make QSO with his mobile antenna. I never heard him, but my Icom IC-756pro3 allows you to listen to two frequencies at the same time, and while I was waiting for Colin to appear, I heard and made QSO with Joe NJ1P when he operated W1AW. He was surprisingly loud. Therefore, today can be called a good day.

“I heard and made QSO with Joe NJ1P when he operated W1AW. He was surprisingly loud. Therefore, today can be called a good day.”

I've worked quite a few visiting ops at W1AW.  Their signals are ALWAYS stellar.  One can only wish to have such an amazing complement of radios, towers, and antennas!

“Maybe I sound too pessimistic, but”

No one can blame you.  We all feel a similar pessimism at times.  With all our local political shit on every type of media, it's harder to find details about Ukraine.  There is a radio show on local FM broadcast once a week that transmit news from Ukraine in English.  But the same show features news from around Europe which also features information about Ukraine, and their struggles to fund or otherwise provide support to Ukraine.  He also plays a wonderful mix of European music in many different languages that I enjoy.  Don't fault yourself as you are only human.

Ukraine, which used the war as a pretext to limit the rights and freedoms of citizens, could become an example for democracies, it was confirmed in the words of Zaluzhny: "Society must agree to temporarily give up a range of freedoms for the sake of survival. Modern wars, unfortunately, are total. They require the efforts not only of the army, but also of society as a whole".

My own nation succumbed to a very similar reality during WWII.  The draft (forced to join the military) was in full force, yet most volunteered.  Many folks left behind found themselves working collectively in support rolls.  My grandparents we're lucky since they had land to grow food on, animals to eat or sell.  Travel was difficult, and driving your own car was rationed.  No Sunday joy rides for many years after.  And neighbors helped neighbors.

My niece has been accepted into a youth challenge academy.  She can not speak for the next two weeks (like a military boot camp) and this is her first time away from home.  She is 17.  I'm extremely pleased that she is so determined to change her world for the better.  I write her daily so she will have mail from outside to help her with her home sickness.  She is also considering a military hitch after graduation which would serve her well the whole of her life.

I met with the surgeon who did surgery on me in January.  The surgery didn't get all the bad tissue and now tells me a second surgery will have to happen.  Now I wait for paperwork from our veterans administration.

Last week, a vehicle hit a power line and some 7500 homes were in the dark.  I rolled my generator out and turned the key and away it went, so quiet that when I came into the house, I couldn't hear it.  Honda generators are great.  Then I started thinking about you Wlad, and this generator would be useless there since it makes 120VAC not 240VAC like your grid.  I had put 10 hours of service on it over two days prior to this outage, but there was still ¼ tank of fuel left.  So from 6pm to 2:30am, it powered my home.  The street lights came on and I turned it off and went to bed.  So for 2.5 gallons of gas, this generator will power my home (and repeater) 18+ hours!

Next day I finally did first oil change, and a new sparky plug and snuggled it back into it's nest for next time.

Western coast of US and much of Canada is on fire.  Lightning sparked another fire about 40km east of here, very near our highest repeater site.  Containment is starting to get better, but it's going to be a rough year for many due to wild land fires.  Then Tuesday, I heard about an aircraft crash.  It was a flight to bring in an aircraft mechanic to our firefighting helicopter base – two souls lost and sparked another fire.  Response was quick on the fire, but took a full day to recover the bodies down the steep terrain.

On the bright side, as August nears, I find I am excited about an up coming picnic we are planning for our regional radio club (w6ccn.)  Rented an entire park.  Folks will be coming in from several states.  Hope to make this an annual event!  Will be a lot of fun to see the faces of all the hams I have only heard from for last several years.

I worry about you and for you Wlad.  Guess I inherited the “worry gene” from my mum.  I'm naturally good at it!

Hi Jaye! Thank you for reply!
Sorry to hear about your surgery, but apparently all surgeons are the same. Mine also didn't give any guarantees and said that if it doesn't work out this time, we'll do another operation. At least that's honest.

Good news and bad news. Life goes on and of course for people what happens next to them is more important than what happens on the other side of the globe. This is normal.

As for mobilization, the problem is not in it, but in how it happens. I don't understand what's the point of ruining the lives of millions if you only need a hundred thousand? Even the russians didn't do that.

The army itself also seems to have remained Soviet, run by Soviet officers and the Supreme Commander, who are known for not wanting to hear bad news. https://xxtomcooperxx.substack.com/p/ukraine-war-11-july-2024-mobutu-syndrome

However, what we see is only the tip of the iceberg. I recently read an interview for the BBC with the famous Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, who was in a russian prison and is now serving in the army. I think his words can be trusted:

"We have many achievements in the use of drones, we have developed new combat tactics, but at the management level we remain the old Soviet army. There is no national planning and standards at the general level. We continue to live by statutes written in the 1990s and 2000s. In general, this is a continuation of the old Soviet tradition. If we go to NATO, we have to use their protocols.

In Ukraine now, most of the battalion commanders are combat officers. But there are generals in the headquarters who continue to work in the old way. No one wants to break bad news upstairs. "The situation is difficult, but under control" - it has already become a meme. We do not have an after action review procedure, that is, an analysis of errors after an operation at the platoon, company, battalion level. You are expected to either complete the task and then you are good, or you are not. But war cannot always have a positive result. It is necessary to understand why the result is negative.

We had a counteroffensive in the south in the summer of 2023. Nowhere after that was there a closed discussion among the military about exactly what went wrong.

Each general has his own army. Everyone is "Zhukov" or "Napoleon". He is trying to report to the top that he did this and that and that. But how many people he lost is not important.

There were some slogans and PR campaigns. But in fact it is the same Soviet army.

There are small units where such standards are implemented. There are separate brigades where the commander focuses a lot on this. There are units that do "double bookkeeping", that is, they work according to the NATO TLP protocol (Troop leading procedure - a NATO standard that determines the sequence of actions of a company or platoon commander during a combat mission. - Ed.) and upstairs they report, as required by our charter.

So we will never join NATO."
https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cd1rmpjelvro

On July 24, around 2:00 p.m., a number of observation posts of the 1st and 3rd battalions of the 31st brigade were completely surrounded in the east of Ukraine. The brigade commander never gave the order to break through, so the personnel who were in that area confronted him with the fact that the boys would break through with a fight. This incident should serve as a reminder to many commanders not to neglect personnel and trust the NCOs and officers on the direct line of action. https://v-variant.com.ua/unochi-biytsiam-31-ombr-vdalosia-z-boiamy-prorvatysia-z-otochennia-u-rayoni-prohresu/

Against the background of fragments of a russian drone discovered in Romania, NATO declared that it had no information about a "deliberate attack" on the territory of the Alliance. This was stated by the representative of the Alliance, writes Sky News. https://news.sky.com/story/ukraine-war-putin-russia-moscow-latest-updates-sky-news-blog-12541713?postid=8020170#liveblog-body

It seems that faith in the defense of NATO is falling rapidly. So I'm not surprised that Poland could become one of Europe’s most prominent security actors. Between 2022 and 2023, its defence budget grew in real terms by 46 per cent. In 2025, Warsaw plans a further 10 per cent increase in its defence budget. But for Poland to take on a leading role in European defence and security efforts, simply increasing defence spending will not be enough. It will also need to develop a long-term, strategic vision for defence, which guides procurement and capability development. https://www.almendron.com/tribuna/poland-could-be-europes-rising-star-on-defence-and-security/

The President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, said that it would be impossible to hold negotiations on the end of the war in Ukraine without russia and China at the same table. https://ruski.radio.cz/prezident-chehii-bez-uchastiya-rossii-i-kitaya-mirnye-peregovory-budut-8823805

There were again two drone attacks during the night, but I saw no mention of the consequences, although not all of them were shot down. In fact, I didn't even wake up. The new sirens got louder and after the attack ended, a male voice with strange sound effects announces it. Most people have their windows open because of the heat and you get woken up twice, unless of course there are explosions in between. It sounds psychedelic and people are against it, but who hears them...

Representatives of contracting companies, which received contracts for housing restoration projects with state funds - from the Fund for the Elimination of the Consequences of Armed Aggression, reported that since the end of last year they began to lack funds to complete their projects. This was the result of the order of the State Tax Service to collect VAT on previously concluded restoration contracts at the expense of the fund. Contractors call the reason for the problem the loose interpretation of certain legal norms by the State Tax Service. https://www.rbc.ua/rus/news/pidryadniki-shcho-vidbudovuyut-zhitlo-zamovlennya-1721925817.html

Against the background of the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers to recognize as critically important public organizations that are executors of international aid projects on foreign grants, and to reserve all their employees from mobilization, the Government's position on this issue with respect to lawyers remains unclear. Lawyers perform an important constitutional function of protecting Ukrainian citizens in the state. The Constitution of Ukraine guarantees everyone the right to professional legal assistance. In cases provided by law, this assistance is provided free of charge. This right, enshrined in Article 59 of the Constitution of Ukraine, is not subject to restriction, even under martial law. For the proper realization of this right, the Institute of Advocacy operates in Ukraine. Only a lawyer can represent another person in court, as well as provide protection against criminal charges.

By ensuring the reservation of judges, prosecutors, employees of pre-trial investigation bodies and law enforcement agencies, while bypassing lawyers, the state violates guarantees of respect for human rights and endangers the proper functioning of one of the branches of government. According to the Constitution, justice in Ukraine is impossible without the participation of lawyers! https://unba.org.ua/news/9340-spozhivachiv-grantiv-zabronyuvali-a-yak-shodo-advokativ.html

At the same time, there is a practice of removing lawyers from participation in the provision of legal aid to mobilized citizens by officials of mobilization centers. And this leads to a violation of the human right to protection and legal aid, provided for by the Constitution of Ukraine.

Today, unpopular mobilization measures are on the rise, when the actions of individual representatives of the mobilization centers and police bodies actually go beyond their powers, lead to gross violations of the law, violations of human rights and freedoms, which has negative consequences both for the image of the state and the Armed Forces, and in terms of compliance legislative requirements in the military sphere.

In addition, the systematic violation of the rights and freedoms of a person and a citizen on the part of mobilization centers employees leads to the demotivation of citizens to fulfill the constitutional duty of protecting the Motherland. To a large extent, violations are caused by the fact that conscripts are unprotected and cannot use the help of a lawyer.

At the same time, lawyers themselves remain unprotected in many cases. Lawyers constantly report violations of the professional rights and guarantees of legal practice by employees of the mobilization centers, interference in professional activity, violence against defenders, illegal deprivation of liberty, confiscation of personal belongings, including those containing lawyer's secrets, in connection with the implementation of professional legal activity. https://unba.org.ua/news/9330-porushennya-prav-advokativ-u-tck-naau-iniciyue-zustrich-z-vijs-kovoyu-vladoyu.html

Hungary will block the €6.5B military aid financing program for Ukraine under the European Peace Fund until Ukraine resumes supplies of russian oil to Hungary, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said. He emphasized that the association agreement between the EU and Ukraine clearly states that Ukraine cannot entirely or partially interrupt the transit of energy carriers through its territory to EU countries. Szijjarto believes it will be difficult for the EC to support Ukraine in this matter, but Hungary will not limit itself to just a complaint to the EU. “The EU should put pressure on Ukraine to resume Lukoil oil supplies to the EU,” the diplomat said. https://ubn.news/hungary-is-blackmailing-ukraine-by-blocking-e6-5b-in-military-aid-due-to-the-cessation-of-russian-oil-transit-to-the-eu/

After the "elections" in Ukraine in 2019, I'm watching the elections in the USA as if it is another Netflix series, where great actors naturally play politicians according to a script with unexpected twists and intrigue until the last seconds. But why do I get the feeling that this is all a pre-planned performance, and the real actors remain behind the scenes?

Sometimes it seems that the only difference between authoritarian regimes and democratic regimes is that in the former people know exactly who is f*cking their ass, and in the latter the population is not even informed of this, showing only hired animators.

And all this is happening against the background of complete uncertainty in Ukraine, the situation in which has remained surprisingly stable for 2.5 years. And there is no guarantee that the situation will change after the elections in the USA. On the other hand, they will determine the last possible signatory of any agreement that will determine the situation not only in Ukraine for the coming years.

It was good to read your post Jaye. Kudos to your daughter, she seems like a very determined person. I hope your upcoming surgery is successful and without complications.

On WW2 here, let’s never forget the unconstitutional concentration camp imprisonment of US citizens of Japanese descent because of hysteria and racism. Shamefully, the Supreme Court of that time approved it. In addition to being incarcerated for years, most of those poor people lost their homes, businesses and money and had to start over after the war.

Wlad, if you feel like our elections are a Netflix movie, then to me they have seemed like a long nightmare episode of the 1950s horror TV series Twilight Zone. (Please forgive my use of an American TV reference here.) if you know of the series, perhaps you are aware of the famous mass hysteria episode “The Monsters are due on Maple Street” in which a ham radio and antenna are briefly involved.

No lawyers? I suppose one is expected to simply watch some You Tube videos to prepare, and then go to court pro se. /s

It’s very disappointing to read that the Soviet style military decision making process is still so pervasive in Ukraine. When facing a numerically superior enemy like Russia with their Soviet methods, it’s clearly madness to use the same ponderous, inefficient tactics. But what else to expect when appointing the same sort of people.

Luckily we have YouTube and can watch this episode. Thanks for the mention!

The last couple of days the power has been almost constant, although the strong winds pose a new danger to the electrical grid. But other than the loud noise in my area, the wind does not cause any other problems. My antenna is fluttering in the wind, but it is securely attached.

The day before yesterday there was an IOTA contest, but I had a feeling that I would miss it. First I talked on the phone with a friend for a long time, then with my son, and when I ate and finally turned on the radio, the power was immediately turned off. On Sunday, I did not even try, although the power was on all day. You need to listen to what fate tells you. But yesterday, despite the fact that it was Sunday, I went on LinkedIn and saw a vacancy that suited me. I wrote to HR and she answered me right away. By the evening she had my resume and I diligently answered the questions of the tests she gave me.

Today I had an online interview where I learned that they know me and have good recommendations about me. Then I remembered that we really crossed paths in several projects. I still suggested that we meet in person again, but it seems like this is another sign...

I also passed the English test yesterday and found out that I have level C1. https://www.efset.org/

Penny Pritzker, the US special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine, also arrived in Kyiv today. This was reported by the US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink on the X social network (Twitter).

"Together with the heads of the companies Amentum, Clayco Inc and Westinghouse Nuclear, we strive to help Ukraine build its own future. A transparent business environment and a strong rule of law are the key to restoring Ukraine and its path to the EU," the ambassador emphasized. https://www.eurointegration.com.ua/news/2024/07/29/7191111/

Defying sanctions, russia has obtained nearly $4 billion in restricted chips since the war began in Ukraine. Many were shipped through a cluster of shell companies in Hong Kong. Still, the U.S. government remains at least a step behind. Since the war started, the Office of Foreign Asset Control, an agency in the Treasury Department that administers the U.S. sanctions program, has designated at least 4,234 russian individuals and companies for economic restrictions, according to OpenSanctions, a sanctions data provider. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/25/technology/russia-sanctions-chips.html

The russian invaders continue to advance in the east of Ukraine. The enemy has success in the immediate vicinity of six settlements. https://informator.ua/uk/rosiyani-prosunulis-bilya-shesti-naselenih-punktiv-na-shodi-ukrajini-karti-deepstate

Ukraine can’t use British missiles to strike targets inside russia. The UK says it would have to agree such a change of policy with some of its NATO allies because of fears of a serious escalation of tension with Moscow. https://www.thetimes.com/uk/defence/article/ukraine-russia-war-british-missiles-qnsfh9rhg

On July 27, drones of the Ukrainian General Directorate of Intelligence attacked an oil refinery and three military airfields on the territory of the aggressor russia. In particular, a Tu-22M3 bomber was damaged at the "Olenya" airfield. This airfield is located about 1,800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. https://tsn.ua/ukrayina/droni-atakuvali-npz-i-aerodromi-v-rosiyi-poshkodzheno-tu-22m3-zmi-2629236.html

On July 26, the EU makes available in support of Ukraine the first payment of €1.5 billion generated from immobilised russian assets. These extraordinary revenues generated by EU operators and held by central securities depositories (CSDs) from immobilised Russian sovereign assets were made available by Euroclear to the Commission as a first instalment on 23 July. The money will now be channelled through the European Peace Facility and to the Ukraine Facility to support Ukraine's military capabilities as well as to support the country's reconstruction. 90% of the financial contribution from the extraordinary revenues will go to the European Peace Facility (EPF) and 10% will go to the Ukraine Facility to support respectively Ukraine's military and reconstruction needs. https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_24_4029

I guess there has to be degrees of English.  I wonder where I would test at? :)

My fingers are crossed for me good news for you!

Excellent news about the interview! I hope you get the job.

I looked up the C1 English level and it’s next to the top level of C2. You are doing very well indeed! (And it shows on your videos).

I’m glad you’re able to watch the Twilight Zone there! To me that particular episode resonates with current events in several ways. Not least of which are the Russians and their propaganda aimed at western societies, like the aliens tormenting Maple Street.

Sanctions have always been like a leaking boat. It’s probably even worse today with chips being so small and having ubiquitous legitimate uses, plus the Chinese, and the ever present criminal underground ready to make a quick buck for either side.  If they are employed for too long, the targets find ways to create a parallel economy which we are seeing, and they provide a false sense of security to those applying the sanctions.

Good news on the proceeds from frozen Russian assets going to Ukraine. Let’s see more of that. Also, it’s past time to start giving the principal to Ukraine as well.  Yes that would encourage more of a parallel economy among the Axis Of Evil but that appears to be happening anyway, protected by China. I don’t think it can be stopped if they really want to do it.

Thanks guys!

As for the work, it's not that simple and I still have to pass the security check and the probationary period. The main thing is that I can handle it physically.

I am greatly grateful to all of you and your support for the opportunity to learn English. I didn't learn the rules, I just communicated with you, using the translator more at first, then less. I hope the day will come when I won't have to look up the translation of the word I need, and I'll start using the tenses and putting words in sentences correctly.

English levels are formal and are mainly used to evaluate students' ability to understand lectures and participate in discussions. I used one free try on this site https://www.efset.org/

I understand that 90% of the money received from interest on frozen assets will remain in Europe, but I hope this is just the beginning.
