I can understand why, when Ukrainians have been in a stalemate war for years, that has accomplished nothing other than mass casualties on each side, the prospect of any kind of change would stir up hopes within them. The present risk-averse approach of the US and EU has no potential to accomplish anything but stalemate, and I think everyone can see that, but don't know what to do about it. Especially when "don't risk escalation" is the sine qua non.

The present risk-averse approach of the US and EU has no potential to accomplish anything but stalemate, and I think everyone can see that, but don't know what to do about it. Especially when "don't risk escalation" is the sine qua non.

In my case, it's not even hope, but the expectation of new opportunities. Besides, I'm calm. God has led me through all the trials and I believe that He will support me in the next ones.

Trump's victory has already led to interesting consequences. Today I heard about a Crimean resident of about 60 years old, who suddenly, along with many other marginalized people, signed a contract and went to fight. He was killed on the very first day, but managed to get a lot of money when signing the contract, and his family will receive even more payments. As it turned out, their enthusiasm was caused by the fact that many are sure that the war will soon end, and the chances of living until then are greatly increased. This person was wrong, but many others are now actively replenishing the russian army.

Another tough week. In the last couple of days, it was hard to get up to the alarm, the workload at work and the change in weather with rains again led to the fact that I began to feel bad. I need to slow down. Yesterday, snow fell in the east and it will probably soon be in Kyiv too.

In the meantime, russian drones and missiles continue to kill people almost every day across the country, far from the front. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cew2jdd11pyo
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c8jyrn4z1gko

However, hatred towards russians does not diminish when you see photographs of destroyed houses and murdered children and adults.

Poland seeks British help to protect Ukraine after Trump win. Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister, will hold talks with the leaders of Britain, France and Nato over concerns about the impact of the US election. https://www.thetimes.com/article/3a759a39-f371-437c-ab8b-19f1028215a5

I am glad that Poland is trying to take over regional leadership from Germany, because this gives Ukraine a chance not only to preserve its statehood in the near future, but also in the future to come under the influence of Poland and begin to rise from the abyss into which it has fallen for the last 30 years.

russian President vladimir pooteen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke on the phone for the first time in two years. In this way, the isolation of the russian president, with whom the vast majority of Western leaders refused to speak due to aggression against Ukraine, was broken. The initiative came from Scholz and took place in close coordination with the United States, Britain, France and other G7 countries, writes the German publication Spiegel with reference to its sources. https://www.spiegel.de/ausland/wladimir-putin-und-olaf-scholz-telefonieren-erstmals-seit-zwei-jahren-a-dc3f43af-807a-4fcb-b92f-44cc2674aba9 Some associate this with early elections in Germany and Scholz's desire to strengthen his position.

Under the administration of newly elected US President Donald Trump, "the war will end faster," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview. https://news.liga.net/ua/politics/news/zelenskyi-pry-trampi-viina-zakinchytsia-shvydshe In Ukraine, a joke has already appeared about the shortage of shoes and the excess profits of shoe stores due to the number of those who ran to "change their shoes" due to the unexpected victory of Trump, in which they did not want to believe and bet on the victory of the Democrats.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine, forced mobilization of those who can be caught continues. On Friday, November 15, a video with the caption that a person in uniform shooting a person in the back who is running away near Kyiv began to circulate on social media. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/968up13VDmE
The police reported that they were investigating the shooting incident and denied that it was a representative of the mobilization center, but for some reason no one believes them.

I welcome Poland playing a much larger role in the region, and even wider. I hope you’re right and it does improve Ukraine governance and societal norms. Of course the Poles have a high strategic interest in a strong Ukraine. The Germans are too reticent to act, or even be seen to act, because of business interests and their far too broadly applied pacifism resulting from historic guilt.

That Trump will seek to end the war quickly seems certain, or should I say as certain as anything can be with him. The question is how disadvantaged Ukraine will be, including whether future NATO membership would be allowed (99% chance no, IMO), and what would protect Ukraine if not NATO. Also of interest will be how Trump and his family will personally profit from what comes after the war.

Another question is how funding the rebuilding of Ukraine will be done and how that will be spread among the involved countries. I expect that frozen Russian assets will be thawed immediately and that interest not already spent will be returned rather than used for reconstruction. Don’t expect Trump to agree to the US paying most or much at all; he will almost certainly demand that the EU deal with it.

Then there is the supply of Russian gas to Europe. Who will pay to repair the Nordstream pipeline? Will Europe suffer collective amnesia and resume buying all the Russian gas that they can?

I expect that the Russians will vastly increase their covert intelligence operations and meddling in the US and the EU without the distraction of the war, and with US intelligence weakened by Trump.

What will the war’s end mean for relations and cooperation between Russia, China, Iran and NK?

If I were a European politician, I would propose, after the declaration of “peace” and fixing new border along the front line, to recognize russia as guilty of the genocide of Ukrainians and, by analogy with Germany, at the expense of its frozen assets, to pay all Ukrainians from the occupied territories a sufficiently large sum with which they could buy housing in the country where they received refugee status.

I hope so, or something similar, and that it would be implemented. However I doubt it will be.

I'm just counting on their greed. Such an opportunity to get other people's money into their economy under a plausible pretext!

Today's missile attack began at sparrow fart and involved more than 100 missiles of all types. At least 10 people were killed. Ukraine’s largest private energy company said the strikes caused "significant damage" to its thermal energy plants and some areas were cut off from the electricity grid as a consequence. Odesa region Governor Oleh Kiper said there had also been disruptions to heat and water supplies, although the latter was gradually being restored. https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cjdl98dk40gt

It is quite difficult to find out the truth about the real consequences, and it will give nothing but sadness. In most of Kyiv there was no electricity for a couple of hours in the morning, but it was not turned off after that. It is good that the weather will be good for another week. Today it was +8C and sunny.

There was a good propagation and I spent some time at the radio and had several good QSO with England, Argentina and Saudi Arabia. Repair of the last receiver is going badly. For the second week now I have not been able to restore reception on medium and short waves. It seems that the problem is still in the dead quartz crystal, which has not been made for 30 years.

I have a headache all day and I feel bad. I have an important meeting with a client tomorrow and I can only cancel it if there is another attack, since I am currently the senior representative of our company, who is in Ukraine and no one can go to the meeting except me.

The Kyiv City State Administration made it clear: no matter how much Kyiv residents protest, indignant and create petitions, nothing will change in the rules of public transport, which were adopted in August 2022. So, transport collapses with overcrowded metro trains, lack of electric transport and the impossibility of getting from the left bank to the right during air raids will remain features of metropolitan life. And there will be no concessions in the form of at least open underground metro stations. https://kiev.informator.ua/uk/v-klichka-ne-zadovolnyatimut-vimogu-kiyan-ne-zakrivati-nazemni-stanciji-metro-pid-chas-trivog

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave support to the decision by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to speak directly with vladimir pooteen on Friday, saying that ending the war will require some engagement with russia’s president. “We all understand how important it is to see an end to the violence in Ukraine, to see an end to conflicts around the world.” Trudeau said in Peru, where he was attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. “That requires a level of engagement with counterparts who in many cases we disagree with.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-11-16/trudeau-indicates-support-for-scholz-speaking-with-putin

pooteen will not stop after Ukraine, but will continue his attacks, in the Baltics or elsewhere - that is how the military and intelligence officers see it. He is already waging a shadow war, including against Germany, as research by WELT AM SONNTAG and "Politico" shows. https://www.welt.de/politik/deutschland/plus254516486/Russlands-Kampf-gegen-den-Westen-Wie-Putin-in-Europa-zuendelt.html

The reason I doubt it will happen is that I think pootie-poot (Pres. George Bush the junior’s nickname for Putin) will demand that the money be returned as a condition of the peace deal.

The Welt article is paywalled. Likely they already pointed out that PP is waging shadow wars against many western countries. Disinformation, faked videos, and similar covert actions are cheap and easy, and there is a significant percentage of people who swallow it and regurgitate it to their friends a relatives.

Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s appointee for director of National intelligence is on record multiple times taking Russia’s line on various things. Is she a mole, or just a useful idiot?

PP would love to have a mole or idiot in that position. Not only would she be able to compromise or quash information from our own agencies, but our allies wouldn’t share highly sensitive intelligence info with the US, nor would they believe what was told to them by the US without very careful vetting.

As I write this I see in the news that Biden FINALLY allowed long range ATACMS to be used inside Russia. It’s probably too little too late by far, but at least it will be helpful. I wonder how many of them are available at this point.

Greetings Wlad,

I am glad you are busy.  Keeps your mind of bad news, or even worse news :(

Like so many, I am ignoring national news in the strictest sense.  Nominees that are monkeys .  .  I am so very disappointed, forced to endure it.

Had our first 0c morning yesterday.  The cold has become difficult for me to endure, even with multiple layers, I can't seem to get/stay warm.  The energy cost to warm my house is the highest in the country.  BUGGER!

Found a small frozen turkey at the grocery store, 2.5kg, so I will look forward to hour national day of Thanks Giving with a roasted bird, stuffed, and some wonderful vegetables and potatoes.  I'll have left-over food for two weeks and LOVE IT!

There is a huge storm aiming right at us.  Today I will put fuel into my generator, fill up the can and my car.  Wind will gust to 90km.  BUGGER!

On the good side, I ordered a mini PC, and small monitor, keyboard/mouse, USB hub.  Saturday night, I assembled everything.  The boxes provided absolute wonderful entertainment for cats!  The little PC only uses about 6-12 watts and all of it is native 12VDC, so it's perfect for my 100% solar powered radio station.  I will be retiring my trusty IBM x61 Thinkpad from 2005.  As I was installing Linux on it, I opened a web browser and watched a great video from some youtube guy who came to my town to talk with local musician/farmer and a Viet Nam vet who I've known and worked with for years.  I'll put the link to it if you want to see it, but also the link to the musicians music video of his latest album.  I really like the guys voice and music.

All week it will be storming and hard rain.  So I have to guard my recliner as the cats think it's only for them :)

In the mean time, I'll try to keep positive while the monkeys multiply.

Lately I have noticed that it is difficult for me to find time in the evening to write something after a sleepless night and a hard day at work. What excited me during the day and I wanted to write about it, becomes insignificant and unclear in the evening when you want to sleep and your thoughts are confused. After all, writing is serious work and it cannot be done well without making serious efforts and without having the right mood. It is even more important to continue recording everything so as not to lose the sequence of events that directly reflect the dynamics of what is happening, which in turn forms the attitude to this or that event or character.

Yesterday I put all my work aside when Kate asked me to help her with her English homework. We tried hard for almost two hours and the result was a good grade. But the main thing is that we spent time together this way and raised our level of English. Kate sleeps little because of the huge workload, but I hope these workouts will increase her efficiency and it will get easier with time. I myself have gone through this and still continue to learn and develop every day. It helps to drown out the awareness of the meaninglessness of existence, distract and occupy yourself with something.

President Biden is making his final appearance at an international summit today, the G20 in Rio de Janeiro. Before the president authorized Ukraine to fire long-range American weapons into russia focused on the region of Kursk, which Ukraine seized and Moscow is trying to recapture. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0mzjm7knw7o

Jake Sullivan:
We have provided the tanks. We have provided the F-16s. We have provided the HIMARS. We have provided the Patriots. We have provided many of the things that you said earlier we wouldn't provide.
And it's not back then. It's, rather, today that Ukraine finds itself in a more challenged position on the battlefield, suggesting that there's not a straight line between those weapons systems and how it does on the battlefield. Where is the straightest line between Ukrainian performance and inputs? It's on mobilization and manpower. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/kyiv-stands-sullivan-says-u-s-role-in-defending-ukraine-defines-bidens-legacy

But the President of Ukraine in one of his latest interviews stated that no one made any dozens of new brigades. https://ukr.radio/news.html?newsID=105824 The question of where all the mobilized people go if there is no demobilization remains open, but the authorities again and again declare the need to mobilize even more people.

On November 19, on the 1,000th day of the Great War, President Volodymyr Zelensky presented the Plan for Ukraine’s Internal Resilience to the Verkhovna Rada. The document consists of 10 points and concerns security, energy, finance, Ukrainian-made weapons, and cooperation with partners.

This has already given rise to a large number of sad jokes about the president's latest plan https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cx2l495rdedo , the number of which is already difficult to count, but which have one thing in common - they are not being implemented. It should also be taken into account that in the Ukrainian language the word "plan" has a second meaning - a slang name for marijuana, which makes every statement by the president that he has a plan rather ambiguous.

Personally, it makes me sad how many on social networks strive to mention the beautiful figure of 1000 days of war, although for me and many others it began 10 years ago.

Vladimir pooteen has approved changes to russia’s nuclear doctrine, setting out new conditions under which the country would consider using its arsenal. The doctrine now says an attack from a non-nuclear state, if backed by a nuclear power, will be treated as a joint assault on russia. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cj4v0rey0jzo

Hi Jaye!
Nice to hear from you!
Thank you for nice story/music! It conveys the atmosphere well.

You are right! Having food and warmth is enough for comfort and confidence in tomorrow. Electricity gave us the opportunity to use the radio, but took away a lot of time, which is wasted on consuming information noise, which often upsets the unstable psyche. For me, the lack of electricity is the opportunity to sleep, read and listen to the radio. Unfortunately, people bought a lot of batteries and converters and the noise when the electricity is turned off is sometimes even greater than before. However, for residents of new houses without gas and more than 5 stories high, the lack of electricity means the absence of heating and elevators. Today, new schedules were published, according to which there will be no electricity for 7 hours a day.

Yesterday morning I heard a loud noise that sounded like either an airplane or a very strong wind. Later, the Kyiv City State Administration reported that the strange hum that the city residents heard was technological noise and was associated with the operation of a large heat source. https://sud.ua/uk/news/ukraine/316078-v-kgga-obyasnili-chto-za-strannyy-shum-slyshali-utrom-kievlyane

They could have warned about this in advance!

Not reading the news is also impossible, although each piece of news needs to be given the opportunity to live for at least a couple of days. Not all information can withstand the test of even one day.

Yesterday Italy, Spain and Greece follow US in closing Kyiv embassies over attack fears. The US embassy earlier said it had received “specific information” of a potential significant air attack and would be closed. Some people linked this to the fact that Ukraine has fired UK-made Storm Shadow missiles into russia for the first time since 2022. US and Ukrainian officials have confirmed Kyiv employed US-made Atacms missiles to strike targets within russia.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2024/nov/20/russia-ukraine-war-live-biden-us-weapons-missiles-putin-nuclear

President Biden’s decision to provide anti-personnel mines to Ukraine, and allow the use of long-range missiles on russian territory comes as the russian military is accelerating its gains along the front line.
Data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) shows that russia has gained almost six times as much territory in 2024 as it did in 2023, and is advancing towards key Ukrainian logistical hubs in the eastern Donbas region. The ISW data shows Moscow’s forces have seized around 2,700 sq km of Ukrainian territory so far this year, compared with just 465 sq km in the whole of 2023, a near six-fold increase. More than 1000 sq km was taken between 1 September and 3 November, suggesting the push accelerated in recent months.  https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn0dpdx420lo

This morning began with snow and a discussion of the attack on the Dnipro using an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) for the first time in the war. https://zn.ua/ukr/war/rankovij-obstril-ukrajini-u-dnipri-poshkodzheno-promislovij-objekt-i-viniklo-dvi-pozhezhi.html

President vladimir pooteen says this morning's attack in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro was carried out with a "new conventional intermediate range" missile, it was codenamed Oreshnik. https://www.bbc.com/news/live/c20726y20kvt

This missile can carry nuclear warheads and reach Europe and is apparently a demonstration. This missile was not intercepted, which speaks to the state of the air defense in Dnipro. Along with yesterday's near-panic over the news of closed embassies, this is also clearly a psychological attack on the population. The Embassy of Kazakhstan in Ukraine advised its citizens to avoid zones of active hostilities or leave the country completely. https://tsn.ua/politika/posolstvo-kazahstanu-v-ukrayini-zaklikalo-svoyih-gromadyan-zalishiti-krayinu-2705586.html

I am more worried about Kate losing consciousness yesterday. Maryna still hasn't figured out what the main reason was. I think it was because of the stress and overload at the lyceum. The same thing often happened to me at school. Probably the children inherited all the health problems that we both had.

Wlad, I’m very sorry and concerned to hear of Kate’s spell of unconsciousness. Best wishes that the doctors can rule out anything serious, and that it doesn’t happen again

I hope that your important meeting went well.

It was a good meeting with very interesting people. One of the bonuses of my position is that I communicate with serious businessmen, and there is always something to learn from these people. And since I am not constrained by a pre-approved strategy, but on the contrary, I must develop it after familiarizing myself with the situation, this allows me to fully reveal my potential and do something new every time.

I noticed that I devote a lot of time to self-study. Every week I read another book on management and gradually change the organization of my department's work and increase its efficiency. Despite the limited human resources, I still see opportunities for process optimization. However, for the third month now I have three open vacancies for lawyers.

I try to discuss my thoughts and acquired knowledge with Kate every week, because her main task now is to organize herself, learn to correctly distribute priorities and workload. We learn together - to manage ourselves and others.

She is already feeling better, but her fainting was an important warning. On the one hand, I am glad that she is so keen on her studies, and on the other hand, it should not harm her health. But I will say honestly - I am very pleased that I can discuss the concepts of ancient Greek philosophers or some historical events with her for hours. I must say that at her age I did not know even half of what she knows, and her curriculum is really very rich.

Seva, in addition to studying at the university and working, is also busy with practice, but also finds time for calls. It's amazing how busy we've all become lately.

Today it was raining and snowing and I decided to stay and work from home. It was the right decision because there was an air raid alarm again. It was quiet in Kyiv, but in Dnipro my colleague witnessed a missile attack. However, in Kyiv the panic was created by the deputies who cancelled the parliament session today because of the threat of a missile strike. https://sud.ua/uk/news/ukraine/316247-zasedanie-verkhovnoy-rady-otmenili-iz-za-ugrozy-raketnogo-udara

I also use power outages to relax, read books or listen to the radio. Today I made some interesting QSO with USA, Greenland, UK and France.

Hello Wlad, glad to hear your work is going so well and is stimulating - very important for a person with an active intellectual life! As others have said, I'm sorry to hear that Kate had a fainting spell but I do know from experience that fainting is one way that some people deal with overload and/or stress.
Glad we finally relented and loosened up the limitations on the ATACMS, somewhat. Putin's ICBM shot may have been meant to show the world that he still has some that work. There is a lot of speculation and debate about whether Putin's nuclear arsenal is what he claims it to be... and he's threatened nuclear war approximately 41 times since the war's start. This video is one example of such speculation: https://youtu.be/iId3y9JtTbs?si=D6k8dZBIiG0Eozr8
3 weeks ago my XYL fell outside and broke her hip, and worse yet, caused a chronically very painful pinch of a nerve where it exits the spine, complete with one operation on the hip and two more hospital stays trying to manage pain. So I have been distracted caring for her and everything else here on the farm. But I have still been reading this forum.
I really look forward to the day when western leaders get fed up with tiptoeing around Putin and his threats, and really unleash the full gamut of conventional weapons against Russian military targets, to end this thing. With the change in leadership that is occurring in Europe and the US, there is hope of that; although many are pessimistic, I am not.

Hi Braden!

I am so sorry that this misfortune happened to your wife! My prayers and best wishes to her! She is so lucky to have you! I also want to thank you again for your support!

Today, while I was talking to Colin, he got a call from his neighbor, whose window was damaged by a strong wind. She is 85 years old and lives completely alone. At least she can call Colin. I can tell you that living alone when you are in poor health or very old is a great stress and challenge. I have already noticed that I can hold on from Monday to Friday, but on Saturday all the fatigue and stress take their toll. Today, despite the absence of air raid sirens, I slept very poorly and felt unwell all day.

I like my job, but when it starts to dream, it is too much. I think my boss would be happy with such involvement, but I will not tell him about it.

As for foreign policy and the outcome of the war, I remain of the opinion that nothing depends on Ukraine for a long time (well, at least since the time when the authorities decided, instead of preparing for war, to see the peace in pooteen's eyes and to demined the borders with the russians, and instead of actively and effectively using their own resources, to continue theft and corruption and only ask for foreign help) and as in that joke about the police advice to a rape victim - all it can do is relax and enjoy herself.

As long as any escalation takes place on Ukrainian territory and not very far from the front line on russian territory, it is just part of the bargaining and preparation for agreements. Unlike the Biden administration, Trump shows no desire to continue the war, so it will most likely end soon. Unfortunately, neither Biden nor Trump set the goal of defeating russia.
