Looks like we have a really good spine surgeon's attention, finally. He speaks Ukrainian, so I'm sure he must be good! Seems very sharp and attentive.
Considering that not even all Ukrainians know Ukrainian, I doubt that he studied it specially. I wish everything to be fine and a speedy recovery to Sharon.

Maryna is going to celebrate Christmas with the children and come to me for the New Year. Maybe we'll have a little celebration in the office.

Although the feelings are of course very contradictory. Despite the interesting job I have been working at for four months now and the relative well-being in Kyiv, the situation at the front remains difficult, and the situation in Syria reminded me that everything can change radically in a week. Assad is already in Moscow. https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cwy8xzxe0w7t This is very similar to the escape from Ukraine of former President Yanukovych in 2014. Now russia is the only country in which there are three "legitimate" presidents.

Some are happy and hope that russia will fall apart or at least pooteen's regime will collapse, some are afraid that the remnants of the russian army from Syria will be transferred to Ukraine. I am more afraid that China will be forced to actively react to the situation and I do not know how. As Murphy's law says "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong."

Some 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since russia's full-scale invasion began, Volodymyr Zelensky has said in a rare admission of the extent of the nation's casualties. In a post on social media, the Ukrainian president said 370,000 injuries had been reported, though this figure included soldiers who had been hurt more than once and some of the injuries were said to be minor.
He also claimed that 198,000 russian soldiers had been killed and a further 550,000 wounded. The Ukrainian president is thought to have been compelled to make the admission after incoming US President-elect Donald Trump wrote on social media that Ukraine had "ridiculously lost" 400,000 soldiers, while close to 600,000 russians had been killed or wounded. Trump did not state where these figures were from. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5yv75nydy3o

I am not inclined to believe in any figures. Especially since they do not reflect the qualitative component of losses. While russia was disposing of scum and criminals, Ukraine was losing its best people. Also, combat losses do not reflect the total losses of people, some of whom left Ukraine, while others remained in the occupied territories, and at the expense of whom russia fully compensated for all its losses.

Zelensky once again did not miss the opportunity to demonstrate a breach of etiquette. His fashion sense was ripped Saturday for the casual gear he wore to the formal reopening of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.

The Ukrainian leader chose a rugged black sweatshirt, black slacks and brown combat boots for both the ceremony and his meeting beforehand with President-elect Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron at Élysée Palace.

Zelensky’s military sweatshirt sported a symbol similar to the official emblem for the Ukraine Armed Forces, which he had emblazoned on a T-shirt he wore in 2022 when asking the U.S. Congress for more help fighting off russian invaders.

Trump advisor Roger Stone said the attire was “disrespectful to the American people”. “He can’t afford a suit? He wore a suit and tie to the World Economic Forum event, but can’t wear one to address a joint session of Congress or to meet the President-elect of the United States?” he told The Post. https://nypost.com/2024/12/07/us-news/zelensky-greets-trump-in-sweatshirt-and-boots-disrespectful/

However, he insults the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian army even more by dressing in imitation of a military uniform, although earlier he evaded military service. At the same time, Ukrainian legislation prohibits civilians from wearing military uniforms, including during martial law. I think this is another reminder that we are dealing with just an actor who plays the president.

Due to increased threats from russian missiles and drones targeting Ukraine’s critical civilian infrastructure, the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv today urges U.S. citizens to exercise heightened caution.  All U.S. citizens should follow Ukrainian government alerts regarding air attacks and monitor a reliable “air alert” app on your mobile phone.  U.S. citizens should abide by all government curfews and quickly follow instructions and seek shelter during air alerts. https://ua.usembassy.gov/security-alert-u-s-embassy-kyiv-ukraine-december-8-2024/

Fortunately, yesterday's warning from the US embassy about an air attack was not confirmed and Kyiv was calm. Perhaps the russians are too busy evacuating their troops from Syria. Undoubtedly, Turkey plays a major role in this exodus of russians, whose president Erdogan poorly hides his desire to restore the Ottoman Empire. Ukraine remains inexorably vulnerable to such a neighborhood. Therefore, I do not rule out that Turkey may lay claim to Crimea, and the appointment of a Tatar with connections to Turkey as the Minister of Defense of Ukraine was not accidental.

President-elect Donald Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is ready for “peace” as he dished on his meetings with world leaders — and Jill Biden — during his trip to Paris for the reopening of Notre Dame. The incoming president revealed Sunday details of his conversations with world leaders on his first trip abroad since winning a second term, including a trilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and Zelensky. “He wants to make peace,” Trump told The Post in a phone interview. “That’s new. “He wants to have a cease-fire,” he added. “He wants to make peace. We didn’t talk about the details. He thinks it’s time, and [russian President Vladimir] pooteen should think it’s time because he’s lost — when you lose 700,000 people, it’s time. It’s not going to end until there’s a peace.” He said he spoke to Zelensky about how to end the bloody conflict that has been raging since 2022. https://nypost.com/2024/12/08/us-news/trump-says-zelensky-is-ready-for-peace-as-he-dishes-to-post-on-meetings-with-world-leaders-and-jill-biden/

Trump also says Ukraine should ‘probably’ prepare to receive less aid from U.S. https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/video/trump-says-ukraine-should-probably-prepare-to-receive-less-aid-from-u-s-226493509712

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the terms of an agreement that provides for a 40-year loan from the US Federal Financing Bank (FFB) for up to $20 billion. This loan is part of the G7 initiative, which provides for the allocation of $50 billion to Ukraine from the proceeds of frozen russian assets. The loan funds will be directed to the Facilitation of Resources to Invest in Strengthening Ukraine Financial Intermediary Fund, which was established by the World Bank on October 10, 2024.

The implementation of this agreement involves the conclusion of several key agreements. In particular, Ukraine, as a borrower, signs a Certificate Purchase Agreement with the Federal Financing Bank (FFB) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). In addition, a Loan Guarantee and Repayment Agreement is concluded between Ukraine and USAID. To formalize the obligations, the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine, on behalf of the state, issues a Certificate of Indebtedness in favor of FFB, which is secured by a USAID guarantee.

The loan amount has an interest rate of 1.3% per annum plus the average current rate on one-year US Treasury bonds. Repayment of the principal amount and payment of interest are planned to be made at the expense of income received from frozen assets of the russian federation. https://www.blackseanews.net/read/225141

Police officers have their own functions of maintaining law and order. At the same time, employees of mobilization centers can perform their mobilization tasks without the police, said Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. https://ua.news/ua/ukraine/ttsk-mozhut-vikonuvati-zavdannya-z-mobilizatsiyi-bez-politsiyi-klimenko Well, it is very indicative that the police are starting to distance themselves from mobilization.

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has announced a reduction in the number of medical universities. Medical students should receive basic higher education at classical universities, and only after that study at powerful medical faculties. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Mykhailo Vynnytsky. https://news.telegraf.com.ua/ukr/ukraina/2024-12-09/5889544-vrachey-stanet-menshe-v-ukraine-planiruyut-umenshit-kolichestvo-meditsinskikh-vuzov?traffic_source=ukr.net

Apparently they decided that weak and sick Ukrainians should die, and healthy ones don't need doctors. I was very lucky that I found myself in the hands of good specialists who received a real education.

Today I received a call from another arrhythmologist who is writing a scientific paper and who was interested in the results of my surgery. In my operation they used a new technique and there are only about 30 people like me. I sent him the latest research. This was an opportunity to talk to my surgeon again. He seems to be proud of his work. I am becoming famous in narrow circles of arrhythmologists)

I have been at the hospital the past few days and missed a lot, here. (I don't want to distract from Ukraine, but Sharon's surgery to correct sciatic pain was very successful, thanks to all for your prayers. It turns out the neurosurgeon is Latvian, and is considered to be world-class. He is also a very friendly and humble young man, breaking the stereotype of neurosurgeons that many have).

Wlad, I had always assumed that Zelensky dresses in his trademark fatigues as a reminder to world leaders that he is engaged in a war. Stone seems to be a very odd duck. Saudi leaders often dress in desert garb when they travel to formal events, not a western "suit." Stone should find other things to focus on of a substantial nature.

Jill Biden and Trump having a positive interaction at Notre Dame got some press over here, too. Some speculate that the Bidens are not as upset with Trump, as they are with the DNC for replacing Joe Biden as the party nominee. Also, speculation about why Joe couldn't attend when he had nothing on his schedule. I think the answer to that is fairly obvious, as he's barely functioning and it's not clear who is functioning for him. No one (including me) knows the answers to any of these speculations and questions. But they're fun to speculate about, I suppose.

I am surprised that the deaths on the Ukrainian side are "only" 40,000, at the same time I cannot comprehend how much heartache is created by those deaths. I had been under the impression that the numbers were even higher than that.  :-\

Blessings to you and Maryna, as well as to all the readers here.

Hi Braden!

Thank God everything is getting better with you!

It's great to see that Sharon's health is improving!

I don't believe that a Latvian knows Ukrainian, rather a Ukrainian pretends to be Latvian.

I was listening to a BBC News podcast on my way to the office today and something confused me about the announcer's almost perfect pronunciation. But when he pronounced the name Volodymyr correctly, I understood everything. I have yet to meet a single English-speaking person who can do that.

Lately I have very conflicting feelings. On the one hand, every day is a constant russian offensive, destruction and death. On the other hand, their offensive is slow and Ukraine can hold most of the territories until negotiations begin or active hostilities stop. There is a persistent feeling that the allies will not leave Ukraine like Afghanistan and this is supported by constant infusions of money from Europe. So as always, I hope for the best and prepare for the worst. I am sure that it can always be worse, but everyone has to do something to make it better.

As for the official death toll, I don't believe it, just like the rest of the "official" propaganda. Nobody knows the exact numbers and nobody needs them. The morale of the population is already low, and it will be easier for the budget, from which payments must be made to the relatives of the deceased. Even if you die of a heart attack in a trench, it will not be considered that you were killed. I am not even talking about the fact that the death of a soldier must be confirmed by presenting his body. Unfortunately, modern missiles, bombs and shells often leave nothing behind. And the bodies of those killed during retreat are collected by the russians at best, while Ukraine does not recognize documents and information from that side.

As for appearance, it really matters. And of course, a lot depends on who you are. Etiquette and protocol are not empty words even for representatives of the poorest tribes of Africa, who can walk around barefoot and in feathers at home, but dress accordingly when they go to international meetings. Arabs can afford to wear national clothes because they are proud of their strong and rich countries. I can assure you that sweatshirts and sweatpants in Ukraine are the national clothes of only the marginalized. Even the poorest lawyer has at least one suit in his wardrobe. But in the case of Zelensky, none of this matters, because he is an actor and wears what the director tells him to. His clothes in no way make him a different person. But abroad, people unfamiliar with Ukrainians and their culture judge them by their leader, and I personally am offended that I can be associated with an illiterate, ill-mannered thug.

China’s escalating conflict with the US over trade is now extending to the drones that have become a vital part of Ukraine’s defense. Thank you Wlad and Bob!

Wlad, as usual you remind me that there is a lot that goes un-perceived or incorrectly perceived about Ukraine, by those of us who don't know the culture.

2025 will be an interesting year, with the certainty of a changing of the leadership not only in Washington and Germany, but also possibly in France.
As far as Trump is concerned, hard to predict what he will do, except that we know his style is to do something bold in order to increase his negotiating leverage, before he does anything. Will he (as an example) station nuclear missiles in Ukraine the next time pooteen threatens nuclear war (as he's done 44 times since the special military operation began)? He might. I'm not predicting that, but it's the kind of thing Trump might do. Biden was ultra cautious and Trump is the opposite - that is my point. So... it will be interesting.

Dear Lord, I pray for this brutal war to be over. Blessings to all of you.

Yesterday, russian occupiers attacked Kyiv with strike drones. The wreckage of one of the drones fell in the center of the capital. https://glavred.net/ukraine/kiev-pod-atakoy-dronov-v-centre-stolicy-zafiksirovano-padenie-oblomkov-bpla-mer-10622099.html?utm_source=ukrnet_news

The temperature today dropped to -10C and in the morning russia launched a massive missile strike on Ukraine with missiles from Tu-95MS bombers, as well as Calibers from the Black Sea and Daggers from MiG-31s. The Shaheds have been attacking all of Ukraine since the evening.

The regions are reporting the consequences of the shelling - critical infrastructure, transport and energy in Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and other regions were hit.

5 out of 9 power units at Ukrainian nuclear power plants reduced their capacity due to the attack. The attack seriously damaged the equipment of several thermal power plants.

russia targeted energy systems, transport networks and key facilities across the country, said US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink in X. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c9dpjweqlwxo

Because of this, there was no electricity for most of the day today, but there is still water and heating.

On December 12, 2024, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of China, met with Dmitry Medvedev, Chairman of the United russia Party of russia, at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping said that over the past 75 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and russia, the two countries have worked together to embark on a new path of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation between major countries and neighboring countries, setting an example for new international relations and relations between major neighboring countries. China is willing to strengthen the docking of development strategies with russia, tap the endogenous driving force of cooperation between the two countries, and continuously benefit the two countries and their peoples.

Xi Jinping said that on the issue of the Ukrainian crisis, China has repeatedly stressed the need to adhere to the three principles of "no spillover of the battlefield, no escalation of the war, and no fanning the flames" to promote the easing of the situation as soon as possible. China will continue to adhere to its consistent position and work with the international community to create favorable conditions for a political solution to the crisis. https://www.mfa.gov.cn/zyxw/202412/t20241212_11543413.shtml

All Ukrainian Osa anti-aircraft missile systems in service with the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have now been modernized and can use an additional missile - the R-73. At the same time, the launch range from the ground will be significantly shorter. https://defence-ua.com/news/osa_z_raketami_r_73_pitannja_tsini_ta_jak_zminilis_harakteristiki_zrk-17430.html

Xi's only criteria for such relations is that the country in question be as committed to violent overreach and despotism, as Xi is.
I have to admit, that's a pretty high standard that only a select few countries can meet... North Korea, Russia, to name a couple.

The news that russia no longer considers the Taliban a terrorist organization https://www.dw.com/en/russia-rebuilding-ties-with-the-taliban/a-69277920 did not make much of an impression on me, but Blinken surprised me.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirms contact with the HTS group, despite it still being on the US terrorism list.

Lies and hypocrisy, which no one even tries to hide, raise big questions about values and trust. Apparently, in politics, only profit and interests matter.

I was also shocked that the BBC promoted an event sponsored by the russian government. In the program dedicated to the world Morse Code championships in Tunisia most of the time was devoted to russians and belarusians. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0k8y9kq

Is the BBC really a British state-owned company? British taxpayers should be happy that the BBC is advertising the russians and belarusians and their successes for their money. There was not a word about the English participants in the program. It is not difficult to guess why. It's disgusting.

This weekend there was a competition "ARRL 10-Meter Contest" organized by American Radio Relay League (ARRL). I haven't participated in competitions for a long time and decided to make a couple of hundred QSO.  I was shocked that russian terrorists were allowed to take part in it and even more so by how many people responded to them. I turned off the radio in disgust.

All the more respect is given to the actions of brave people from small countries. A scandal erupted at the World Functional Sports Championships in Budapest. Lithuanian athlete Cornelia Dudayte saw russian symbols at a competition where russians were supposed to compete as neutral athletes, and in protest, she wore a T-shirt with the words "Make russia small again." The athlete was forced to leave the championship because she refused to take off her T-shirt. After the incident, the Lithuanian team, which consisted of 34 participants, decided to leave the championship after her. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c99x1j1jld9o

It appears that dismissal and transfer of mid-level commanders is the basis of the troop management strategy, but so far this has not improved the situation on the battlefield.

A study on how Ukrainians feel has shown the expected conclusion that the further from the front line people live, the better their health and medical care. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c1j0xkn3j9no

The study is about chronic diseases and those that lead to death, but also the season of sneezing and coughing has long begun. I, apparently, after a long resistance, have caught some kind of infection or caught a cold. I have a sore throat and a runny nose.

I prefer a human being person like Zelinskyj, instead of dressed up polished political symbols

Unfortunately, people like you turned out to be the majority in the last presidential elections. As a result, Ukraine lost a fifth of its population and territory, and this is not the end.
