It was windy and rainy most of the day today, so I decided to stay home. I slept poorly again last night and woke up coughing, but I felt better in the evening. Also, today was the first time in recent times that the power was not turned off in Kyiv. However, tomorrow the power outages will return. The temperature is slightly above zero, and this eases the situation in the power grid.

Igor Kirillov, russia's chemical weapons chief and mouthpiece, and an aide were killed by explosives planted in an electric scooter, according to russian officials, which was blown up as he left the building he lived in Moscow. On the eve of his killing, Ukraine's SBU declared that he had been named in absentia in a criminal case for the "mass use" of prohibited chemical weapons on the eastern and southern fronts in Ukraine. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyx4kvz4l0o

In Ukraine, every day there are more laws and fewer rights. Lawyers point out that restricting the rights of servicemen and other citizens during martial law without adhering to basic standards for conducting criminal proceedings does not promote voluntary military service, and also creates the prerequisites for victim behavior. https://unba.org.ua/publications/9688-vijna-abo-tyurma-yak-voennij-stan-zminiv-pravila-zastosuvannya-trimannya-pid-vartoyu.html

If the prosecution does not like the lawyer's position, it resorts to pressure, including through territorial recruitment and social support centers. Physical pressure, accusations of treason, mobilization - all this can be a reaction of the authorities to active defense.

The problems of lawyers' activities under martial law were discussed by the head of the National Association of Lawyers of Ukraine, the Council of Lawyers of Ukraine, Lidiya Izovitova, during her speech at the International Human Rights Conference. https://unba.org.ua/news/9784-deyaki-tck-stali-teritoryami-bez-advokaturi-lidiya-izovitova.html

Apparently Ukraine will have to go the whole way of Western democracies, of course, starting small.

King Henry VIII (1509–1547) began to issue laws against begging. Only the infirm and the elderly were allowed to beg; those who could work were flogged and ordered to return home. If caught a second time, they were beaten again and half their ears were cut off. If caught a third time, they were executed as criminals. During Henry VIII’s reign, 72,000 vagrants and beggars were executed. These laws went down in history as the “Bloody Legislation.”

King Edward VI (1547–1553) strengthened these laws. Those who did not work were sold into slavery to the person who reported them. If a slave ran away, for the first escape, a brand was burned on his forehead or cheek and he was given a lifelong slave. For the second escape, a second brand was placed, and for the third, he was executed as a state criminal.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law that improves the mechanisms for enforcing penalties in the form of fines and community service. According to the law, if a fine cannot be collected due to the debtor's lack of property or funds, it can be replaced with another type of punishment - community service. https://sud.ua/uk/news/ukraine/318415-ukraintsy-mogut-zamenit-shtrafy-obschestvennymi-rabotami-vladimir-zelenskiy-podpisal-zakon

No, not so. I'm from Denmark and Denmark is the country that has contributed the most help to Ukraine in their fight against Russia. I support and agree with Denmark's continued help to Ukraine in their fight against Russia/Putin. Therefore I still prefer a human being like Zelinskyj, instead of polished political symbols

My boundless respect and gratitude to Denmark and the Danes who support Ukraine, but I do not understand where and how you had the opportunity to personally communicate with Zelensky or his people in order to draw such conclusions.

I have been waiting for these bandits to leave power for many years, but I have a feeling that the next ones will be even worse.

The Constitution states that a citizen who has lived in Ukraine for the last ten years before the election day can run for president. And for people's deputies - for the last five. According to this norm, virtually all Ukrainian refugees abroad have lost the opportunity to run for office. So, power will be shared among those who in recent years, being in Ukraine, were able to gather more resources. Naturally, they are already in power.

Electronic voting and the unprecedented ease of manipulation will greatly help. https://www.politico.eu/article/ukraine-studies-european-models-post-war-elections-democracy/

Unfortunately, observing the situation from the inside, I have a very bleak perspectives.

Today I felt better and went to the office. The team was waiting for me to find out the answer to a very important question - will there be a New Year's corporate party this year. For me, this is a word from another life, but I talked to the boss and he is not against it. I think this is not a big expense for the company and our office manager secretly said that the accounting department drinks coffee for a larger amount per month. I think she's exaggerating, but I am very pleased with the work of my office and I think that my people deserve a good rest. The big boss recently said again that I praise them too often, but I think that this is really true. We already have a large amount of work for next year and I think that a good atmosphere and well-coordinated work of the whole team will allow us to achieve good results. It also provides good support in the conditions of our gloomy reality.

The de facto leader of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa gave an interview to the BBC for the first time. I noticed that he was dressed in a shirt and jacket, and did not try to look like a terrorist in camouflage. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cj6zxy4778wo Although this would be expected of him as the leader of an organization recognized by the US and other countries as terrorist. Probably, only scoundrels wear suits lately. Isn't the word lawyer a synonym for scoundrel?

I should have invaded Ukraine earlier, pooteen tells russians in TV marathon. A lengthy portion of the session was focused on the war in Ukraine, with pooteen saying he was "open to compromises" to end the war - although it was unclear what such compromises could entail. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cdjgzrkxp97o

Yesterday pooteen stated that it would be a good idea to conduct an experiment and hit Kyiv with an Oreshnik missile and see if they could shoot it down and Zelensky called pooteen a dumbass https://x.com/ZelenskyyUa. Today the dumbass sent ballistic missiles to Kyiv. It was quite loud, but there were no hits near me. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cvg74j2x8k3o

There were air raid sirens all night, but I only heard some of them. And that was only because I woke up from a bad cough.

russian troops in the east have captured Trudove and Uspenivka, completing the occupation of the last fragment of the "Uspenivka pocket." Unfortunately, not all Ukrainian troops were able to escape the encirclement, reports the analytical project DeepState. https://meta.ua/uk/news/war-in-ukraine/242509-okupanti-zahopili-trudove-ta-uspenivku-ne-vsi-viiskovi-zsu-viishli-z-otochennya-deepstate/

Against this background, the rare counterattacks do not cause much joy.

Explosions have occurred near the russian Northern Fleet base in Murmansk. https://www.pravda.com.ua/rus/news/2024/12/19/7489907/
Novoshakhtinsk in western russia was attacked by attack drones, and an oil refinery in the city caught fire. https://www.rbc.ua/ukr/news/novoshahtinsk-atakuvali-udarni-droni-misti-1734562804.html

Ukraine's largest energy company said that for security reasons, they will currently provide only a minimum of information about the state of the energy system in Ukraine. https://news.novyny.live/v-ukrayini-obmezhat-povidomlennia-pro-stan-energetiki-prichina-220897.html

I doubt that the russians don't know about the state of the energy system, but the fact that this information is hidden from the Ukrainians speaks for itself.

Yesterday another video appeared on the Internet about the "work" of "mobilizers" who poured gas into a car and set it on fire, trying to pull the driver out of his car. https://enovosty.com/uk/news-ukr/news_society-ukr/full/busifikaciya-perexodit-usi-mezhi-tck-z-policiyeyu-vikuryuvali-vodiya-gazom-ta-pidpalyuvali-avto

More and more people are asking the question: how are Ukrainians who behave like russians different from russians? It seems to me that the answer is obvious - this will happen in any society if you give power to marginals and relieve them of responsibility. Every day Ukraine becomes more and more unpleasant country and not all the blame can be put on russians. Broken windows theory in action.

Well, there were more hits and destructions than officially reported. But even what the authorities said was pretty sad.

As a result of the enemy attack and damage to the heating main in the Holosiivskyi district, 630 residential buildings, 16 medical institutions, 17 schools, and 13 kindergartens are currently without heat. https://t.me/KyivCityOfficial/11890

The historic St. Nicholas Church and an office building nearby were damaged. https://thepage.ua/ua/news/20-grudnya-rosijska-raketa-poshkodila-kostel-svyatogo-mikolaya-u-kiyevi
The building used to house the headquarters of a major russian bank that was nationalized last year. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/features-66268627

The European Commission has decided to provide Ukraine with €18.1 billion in macro-financial assistance (MFA). The loan will be disbursed in tranches over the course of 2025, with the first disbursement to Ukraine in early January.

It is noted that this amount is the EU’s contribution to the G7 initiative “Emergency Loans to Accelerate Ukraine’s Revenues” (ERA), which provides for a collective loan of €45 billion to help Ukraine cover its budget, military and recovery costs. https://www.ukrinform.ua/rubric-economy/3939971-evrokomisia-opriludnila-risenna-pro-181-milarda-kreditu-dla-ukraini-persij-trans-u-sicni.html

"Ukraine is starting to receive the first US funds at the expense of frozen russian assets. The World Bank will provide $2 billion through the DPL mechanism. The Bank's Executive Board approved the allocation of funds the day before. And today the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine signed the relevant agreements with the World Bank," Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said.

He noted that, in particular, $1 billion will be provided in the form of a non-refundable grant from the World Bank's FIF fund with a US contribution within the framework of the G7 initiative. Another $1.05 billion will be received in the form of a loan under guarantees from the governments of Japan and Great Britain. https://www.ukrinform.ua/rubric-economy/3940240-ukraina-pocinae-otrimuvati-persi-kosti-zi-zamorozenih-aktiviv-rf-svitovij-bank-nadae-2-milardi.html

A loan at the expense of russian assets. I wouldn't be surprised if later this loan has to be repaid to russia, perhaps at the expense of the territories through mutual reciprocity...

According to official statistics, only 0.26% of registered businesses in the country were included in the List of Taxpayers with a High Level of Voluntary Compliance with Tax Legislation – the so-called “White Business Club”. This was reported by the People’s Deputy of Ukraine and member of the Finance Committee of the Parliament of Ukraine Nina Yuzhanina. Of these, only 151 are private entrepreneurs, or 0.009% of more than 1.7 million registered private entrepreneurs. This approach to small entrepreneurs contributes to the reduction of entrepreneurship in the country and harms economic development. https://www.komersant.info/0-26-ukrainskoho-biznesu-u-bilomu-klubi-yuzhanina-zaiavyla-shcho-tsia-polityka-znyshchuie-pidpryiemnytstvo/

In late November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law on tax increases. New changes to tax legislation provide for tax increases for individuals and entrepreneurs. The military levy has increased from one and a half percent to five percent. After the president signed this law, Ukraine saw a mass closure of individual entrepreneurs. https://tsn.ua/ukrayina/pidpriyemci-skarzhatsya-fopi-zakrivayutsya-yaki-naslidki-pidpisannya-zakonu-pro-pidvischennya-podatkiv-2727390.html

But there is also a good news. A coalition of countries led by Britain and Latvia that is engaged in joint procurement of UAVs for Kyiv will begin transferring tens of thousands of drones to Ukraine in January, British Deputy Defense Minister Luke Pollard said on Thursday. https://interfax.com.ua/news/general/1035303.html

At first I thought you were talking about Bastiat's broken window theory (naturally, since my training is in economics and not criminology), but now I understand what you are actually saying. The Russians are Russian-izing Ukraine by pummeling it to dust, hoping that it will just be abandoned and he can walk right in without much resistance, and with a populace that is already accustomed to Russian-style lying coming from the State. Sadly this seems to be working, starting at the top in Ukraine.

The US president has already retired, so a month from today when the new president is sworn in, things may get interesting again. Hopefully more interesting for Russia than for Ukraine. Kudos to the folks who pulled off the exploding scooter caper, in Moscow.

I wish you annd your family as merry a Christmas as can be had under the circumstances, and hopefully even more merry than that!

Lawlessness begets lawlessness.

You got it right!

I can imagine how those who die every day at the front feel, knowing what is happening behind their backs.

Two sources in air defence units told the Guardian the deficit at the front has become so acute that the general staff has ordered already-depleted air defence units to free up more men to send to the front as infantry. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/dec/21/ukraine-faces-difficult-decisions-over-acute-shortage-of-frontline-troops

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that the statement about the "transfer of air defense to infantry", published by the British newspaper The Guardian with references to sources, is unreliable and incorrect. https://www.radiosvoboda.org/a/news-henshtab-zsu-media-perevedennya-ppo-v-pikhotu/33248296.html

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken believes that Ukrainians must make a decision: fight or seek ways to negotiate and try to achieve a ceasefire. https://www.state.gov/secretary-antony-j-blinken-on-msnbc-morning-joe-with-willie-geist-jonathan-lemire-andrea-mitchell-and-mike-barnicle/

European allies and Ukraine are approaching critical weeks before Donald Trump’s inauguration, when Ukraine’s sovereignty and Europe’s security are at stake.

The Financial Times article discusses Donald Trump’s possible policy towards Ukraine after his inauguration. In particular, it mentions that Trump may try to force Ukraine to conclude a peace agreement on terms favorable to russia, or even to abandon its support for Kyiv.

It also reports on the difficult situation in which Europe finds itself in the context of the war in Ukraine. European leaders argue that any peace settlement should not be imposed without Ukraine’s participation. However, due to internal political problems in some European countries, such as France and Germany, Europe is unable to act with great force to influence the situation. https://www.ft.com/content/e241db42-128b-4c5b-9abd-5a71163409c9

In Kyiv, heat supply has been restored to all consumers who were left without heating the day before due to a missile attack on the capital. This was reported by the Kyiv City Military Administration. https://zn.ua/ukr/war/u-kijevi-povnistju-vidnovili-opalennja-pislja-raketnoji-ataki-jakoji-rf-zavdala-naperedodni.html

Today was a surprisingly quiet day, except for two short alarms at night and during the day. Fortunately, there were no missiles or drones in Kyiv.

It will be more difficult for cities like Kharkiv and Kherson, because russia bombs them with aerial bombs, which cannot be intercepted and cause great destruction. For example, the Kherson Regional Oncology Center was destroyed by two air bombs. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c62396q92zjo

Ukrainian drones in turn attacked Kazan, where several military factories are located, but apparently due to the impact of electronic warfare, the drones hit residential buildings. https://www.rbc.ua/ukr/news/ataka-droniv-kazan-tspd-rozpovili-ki-vazhlivi-1734768960.html

Kazan is far from the front line and I don’t know if there are any electronic warfare systems there, but it is noteworthy that the drones were able to fly there at all. Some russians can now feel like Ukrainians.

The government wants to obtain licenses from the United States to produce Patriot anti-aircraft systems in Ukraine. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelensky in a conversation with readers of the French publication Le Parisien.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0s0f-dHnck

I don’t even want to know what one must be under to make such statements...

Zelensky was asked why he wears a military uniform. "I could never afford to wear a purely military uniform, because I respect the military, but I myself am not a military man. I have such clothes, very close to the military," Zelensky replied.
https://24tv.ua/chomu-zelenskiy-nosit-viyskovu-formu-prezident-poyasniv-svoyu_n2711398

Unfortunately, no one asked the question of why he then wears a uniform similar to a military one.

In general, there are two opposing views on war in society. Those who are directly fighting or who are really threatened by it, who suffer from it, want it to end quickly. Those who hold power and make money from it want to continue. This is logical and I understand both.

At the same time, both in Ukraine and abroad, one of the main arguments why the war cannot be stopped is the assertion that if we stop fighting, then in a few years russia will recover, assemble a new army and continue to fight. At the same time, they ignore the fact that russia is not going to stop now, and Ukraine is rapidly losing territory, people and the remnants of the economy. At the same time, I have not heard anything that anyone has set the task, if the war ends, to restore and strengthen Ukraine to such an extent that russia will no longer be able to successfully attack.

The head of the European Union's foreign policy service, Kaia Kallas, stated that prematurely advancing negotiations to end the war will not have a positive outcome for Ukraine.
https://www.radiosvoboda.org/a/news-kallas-ukraina-perehovory/33245798.html

It’s a pity that she didn’t say how long everything would continue without changes and how many Ukrainians would survive (if they survive, of course) before russia apparently stops at the border with Poland. Sometimes it seems that no one is interested in the survival of as many Ukrainians as possible except the Ukrainians themselves, for whom the only real chance to survive is to run as far away as possible.

No matter how hard it is for the refugees, they are becoming more and more assimilated and are unlikely to return to Ukraine. In a conversation with Seva, who came to visit his mother and sister last weekend but will not be able to come this weekend because he works all his free time from studying, I joked that on Sundays in Poland only traffic lights and Ukrainians work. Seva replied that traffic lights do not always work...

But this is nothing compared to the fact that in Ukraine now men have fewer rights than women in Afghanistan. In essence, Ukraine has introduced slavery for a certain category of citizens (slaves), who have no rights or freedoms without the permission of the owner (the state). As in the case of slavery, a Ukrainian cannot voluntarily renounce citizenship (slavery).

It is significant that in my team now men (including me) make up only a fifth of all employees.

However, women also do not tolerate the situation well. The wife of a friend (they lives far from the front, both have a job) describes her condition as a compressed spring, ready to break from the stress. When we talked with the boss, we noted the inadequate behavior of one employee. The boss said that she changed a lot after the big invasion in 2022.

But perhaps the most significant event, the full consequences of which still cannot be assessed, in recent times was the hacking of Ukrainian state registries on December 20, 2024. Among the main registers are the State Register of Civil Status Acts of Citizens, the Unified State Register of Legal Entities and Individual Entrepreneurs, and the State Register of Real Estate Rights. The authorities immediately blamed russia and russian hackers. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c7ve1298ndgo?xtor=AL-73-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bukr%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bukrainian%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D

A total of 25 registers were damaged. It is impossible to conclude any real estate alienation agreement, purchase and sale agreements, leases, donations, mortgage agreements. It is not possible to enter information about the change of the head, participants of legal entities. State programs for payments to victims of russian aggression, privatization of municipal property are suspended.

Cybersecurity experts point out that with access to the registers, attackers could actually gain access to all data about Ukrainians – addresses, contacts, property lists, information about marriages, divorces. Data could also be compromised, that is, information could be changed. For example, criminals could change the names of company owners, people’s shares in companies, addresses, and even remarry other people. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cx26dypg4kgo

There are also queues at the borders due to the impossibility of checking and registering the movement of people and goods.

People joke that the state has received several million new reservists, because the data on employee reservations and deferments from military service has also been lost, the program by which mobilizers checked people when they caught them on the street does not work. Now, by default, everyone could be sent to the army until they prove otherwise with paper documents. But few people have them, because the state declared that one of its greatest achievements was the transfer of mobilization to electronic form.

Against this background, the adoption of the law according to which a register of military personnel was created looks like a mockery.

The following data of the military will be stored in the registry: last name, first name, patronymic, gender, date of birth, digitized facial image, registration number of the taxpayer's registration card.

Also stored will be: unique record number in the Unified State Demographic Register (if available), marital status and information about family members, information about issued military registration documents. https://www.ukrinform.ua/rubric-society/3939379-rada-uhvalila-zakon-pro-stvorenna-derzreestru-vijskovosluzbovciv.html
