I have had to walk a lot for the last two days. The authorities, who never use public transport, decided that it should be stopped during an air raid. And while empty buses stand near the stops, people also stand near them in crowds. Considering that the metro also stops going to the other side of the Dnipro, this makes it impossible for most people to get to work or home. They are forced to wait or walk. Naturally, taxis are becoming as accessible as a private flight to the moon. Yesterday, when I was walking along the road, some guy stopped and gave me a ride in his car. Today, I walked several kilometers when the bus stopped halfway along the road. I don’t want to check how realistic this is in the rain or frost. It’s even worse for people with physical problems, with children or the elderly. The authorities are very far from the people...

US President Donald Trump has threatened russia that if an agreement is not reached soon to end the war in Ukraine, he will impose high taxes, duties and sanctions on everything russia sells. The American leader made this post on his social network Truth Social.

Trump began his post by stating that he "does not want to harm russia", loves the russian people and has always had good relations with dictator vladimir pooteen. The US President stated about "mystifications" by the radical left regarding russia and spread the propaganda cliché that it was russia that allegedly helped the US win World War II, losing 60 million people.

"Considering all this, I am going to do russia, whose economy is collapsing, and president pooteen a very big FAVOR. Make a deal now and STOP this senseless war! EVERYTHING WILL ONLY GET WORSE," the US President wrote. https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/113872782548137314

Yesterday talking to reporters in the White House, he said of russian president vladimir pooteen: “He should make a deal. I think he’s destroying russia by not making a deal.” “He can’t be thrilled,” Trump said of pooteen. “He’s not doing so well. I mean, he’s grinding it out… it’s not making him look very good… I think he would be well off to end that war.”

Trump said he would meet with pooteen, and the details were being arranged. “Could be very soon,” he said. “The war Ukraine and russia should have never started,” he added. https://edition.cnn.com/2025/01/21/europe/analysis-trump-putin-ukraine-intl-latam/index.html

Of course, some analogies with Israel come to mind, but overall it looks like Trump wants to show that he was the one who won by putting pressure on russia. Just like pooteen, having killed hundreds of thousands of russians and undermined the russian economy, he will be able to declare victory by showing the captured territories and the fact that now the whole world reckons with him again. Of course, all his losses in people and in the economy are compensated by the captured population and resources in Ukraine. Ukraine will be offered to be glad that it has remained to exist at all.

On the other hand, Trump has taken this to a personal level and perhaps hopes that he will be able to achieve peace in Ukraine as quickly as in Israel. This gives reason to believe that he will do everything possible and as quickly as possible, since his pride is at stake. Anyway, President Donald Trump has already missed his deadline for ending the war in Ukraine in 24 hours.

We will also soon learn about the final price for Ukraine. It will also be extremely interesting to watch Zelensky's fate. Perhaps this will serve as a small consolation to all who suffered from his activities.

Every week there are reports that Ukrainian drones have attacked another military plant in russia. https://zn.ua/ukr/war/droni-atakuvali-vojenni-objekti-v-kazani-kerivnik-tspd.html

However, even if they are not attacked, the russians are apparently no longer capable of making new strategic aviation aircraft, therefore uses old parts from Soviet times. In 2022-2023, russia was able to build only three new Tu-160 bombers, using old parts. By February 2022, one old Tu-160 remained at the Kazan Aircraft Plant, which was also modernized. russia plans to put all four Tu-160Ms into service by 2025, although it had planned for 2023. One of the reasons for the delay is problems with the engines and onboard radio-electronic equipment. The situation with the modernization of Tu-22M3 bombers is even more complicated. https://nv.ua/ukr/world/countries/vinishchuvachi-tu-160-zmi-diznalis-skilki-litakiv-pobuduvala-rosiya-novini-rosiji-50483121.html

Meanwhile, the State Registers of the Ministry of Justice in Ukraine have resumed their work. Their functioning, disrupted after the russian cyberattack, has now been fully restored. https://news.novyny.live/miniust-vidnoviv-robotu-derzhreiestriv-pislia-kiberataki-227823.html

New details emerge in the scandal with the 155th brigade: mobilized soldiers who were previously caught at the border for attempting to escape from Ukraine were sent to France. 56 servicemen of the brigade voluntarily left training grounds in France. Now the former brigade commander is being blamed for everything, who enrolled recruits caught in Ukraine, and then failed to report their escape in time. https://tsn.ua/ukrayina/skandal-z-155-brigadoyu-do-franciyi-vidpravili-mobilizovanih-yakih-pered-cim-zlovili-na-kordoni-za-sprobu-vtechi-2748345.html

Although it seems to me that he is simply being made a scapegoat, because he probably could not influence who exactly would be sent to his brigade from among the forcibly mobilized.

Ukraine has detained its army's chief psychiatrist for alleged "illegal enrichment" charges related to earnings of more than $1m (£813,000) accrued since the start of russia's invasion in February 2022. In a statement, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said the man sat on a commission deciding whether individuals were fit for military service. The SBU said he owned three apartments in or near Kyiv, one in Odesa, two plots of land and several BMW luxury cars, and investigators searching his home also found $152,000 (£124,000) and €34,000 in cash. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cd7dvl0gn1lo

The most remarkable thing about this story is that nothing is heard about who appointed him to this position, although this person had previously been involved in corruption...

US has always been allowed to increase their military presence in Greenland. This is secured by an agreement from 1951. So Trumph's argument that US needs ownership of Greenland for security reasons is completely baseless. They can station as much military in Greenland and sorrounding waters as they like.

Wlad I agree with your assessment that Ukraine will win the consolation prize in negotiations of continuing to exist at all.

Its easy to see that Trump has already decided who will win and who will lose in any negotiated settlement of the war in Ukraine.

His comments are effusive about Russia, how he loves the Russian people, has always had a great relationship with Putin, and how Russia helped the US win WW2 citing greatly exaggerated losses. And he is clearly eager to once again claim that Russian activities to interfere in the 2016 election and help him win were a “HOAX”, thus to show 1) That he won without Russian assistance, and 2) That Russia isn’t really a bad actor.

Furthermore, his musings that because of the war, that Putin must not be happy, and now has a bad economy, and so on - as if Putin were merely a corporate executive heading troubled company because of a poor decision (the invasion of Ukraine, which Trump initially said was “smart”) and ought to be looking to improve the situation, rather than a ruthless dictator bent on re-establishing the Russian/Soviet empire by force.

He never, that I saw, said anything about the illegal invasion of Ukraine, nor anything substantive about what Ukraine has lost in soldiers, civilians, destruction of cities, and captured territory. Nor anything about Ukraine’s right to sovereignty in the first place.

Nor was there any mention of NATO and American support for Ukraine, and resolve to continue it as required, nor about NATO defense in general, in the event that Putin continues to prosecute the war. Taken with his other rash statements about NATO over the years it’s hard to believe that he has any backbone for standing up to Putin.

Trump has given Putin many signals that he can make peace without losing anything on his end, including no NATO membership on the horizon for Ukraine. In addition Trump has made it clear that he is very eager to make the “deal” as quickly as possible to satisfy his campaign promise, thus giving Putin a major negotiating advantage. It would not even surprise me if Putin has the audacity to demand a rollback of NATO boundaries to pre war lines.

Of course, there will be plenty of fault to go around, Biden’s timid and generally late supplies of weapons, plus a six month delay from the right wing extremists in Congress, abysmal leadership and policies in Ukraine, and the typical vacillating of Germany and some other NATO members.

Hi Bob!

On the one hand, Trump is destabilizing everything, but in the case of Ukraine, this will force Europe to be more active. I believe that Ukraine's accession to NATO is an unrealistic scenario in the near future, but Europe's support will grow and this is more important.

russia says it remains "ready for an equal dialogue, a mutually respectful dialogue", reacting to US President Donald Trump's threat to impose sanctions against Moscow if it did not "stop this ridiculous war" in Ukraine.

"We're waiting for signals that are yet to arrive," says President Vladimir pooteen's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov.

He adds that russia sees nothing new in Donald Trump's threats to impose sanctions.

"He likes these methods, at least he liked them during his first presidency." https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cn0y51z7wedt

As a lawyer, I certainly couldn't help but notice that legal experts are blaming Donald Trump’s suspected use of artificial intelligence for the often “slipshod” language of his multitude of executive orders. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-garbled-executive-orders-ai-b2684658.html

My own experience has shown the extreme primitiveness of AI and its inability to create a quality document. However, it is one thing to process information according to a template, and another thing to understand and analyze it. But it seems to me that when AI gains consciousness, it will be difficult for a human to convince AI to do what it is ordered to do.

In Ukraine itself, there is also an invisible struggle for power. At least the recent detention of several generals who are accused of allegedly failing to defend Kharkiv in 2022, I see as part of the fight against the opposition. It is no secret that former Ukrainian President Poroshenko maintains good relations with the old generals who stopped the russians in 2014, and provides great assistance to some military units. These generals are fighting and became famous back then. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c1ez6j48vepo

It is also very indicative how politicians abroad treat Poroshenko. For example, at another big meeting in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stood up, walked around the large table to greet and hug Poroshenko. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRjbit35sUs

Fogs and rains make me weak and sleepy. However, my younger colleagues also feel unwell, so I just try to rest more. By the end of the week I am exhausted and feel tired already on Thursday. I measure and record my blood pressure and pulse again to send them to the doctor at the end of the month. In general, I have been feeling the same for several months now, which I consider a good result.

I agree NATO membership soon won’t happen, I should have been more clear and say the long term. Putin will likely insist on no NATO membership ever, probably also no EU membership.

You’re probably correct about Europe stepping up support for Ukraine as US support dwindles, but I wonder how effective that would be, since much of their weaponry is from the US.

Poroshenko might be a very good choice based on past performance, though clearly imperfect. Based on my limited understanding, of course.

I’m glad that your health has been at least stable, Wlad, and that you find it a good outcome.

As for being very tired by Thursday, it sounds like that reflects your professional work efforts more than anything else!

Trump says a lot of things. Given his narcissism and amoral character, acting without regard to or in spite of his personal feelings is unlikely, IMO. He just had General Mark Milley’s photo removed from a display of past and present Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff because of his feelings against Milley. That’s an astoundingly petty and spiteful but inconsequential action, so I expect nothing better when the stakes for Trump are far more important.

Ultimately, time will tell which of his relevant statements were indicative when the peace agreement, if any, is finalized.

Trump's talk about NATO reminds me of a magician's tricks, who distracts attention with bright details. It is worth remembering that the main plans and agreements usually remain unknown to the public. It is also worth remembering what military resources the US has in Poland, which can make the final move and put an end to the war with an exhausted russia. Then Poland and the US could emerge victorious, despite all the help provided by the entire European Union. And for Ukraine, a full-fledged military and economic union with the USA, UK and Poland may be more beneficial than with the EU and NATO.

I think the agreements between the US and russia are already in the final stage. There are rumors that in Ukraine they are already buying sites for political advertising for the spring, which may indicate that elections are coming soon.

I don't think Poroshenko is a good choice. It's like marrying your first wife after being married to another and getting divorced again. In any case, it's a throwback, and Ukraine can't afford that, considering how much everything has changed.

Perhaps I am well influenced by the young team that charges me with energy and positivity)

It was quiet during the day today, but at night Ukraine and russia exchanged drone attacks again.

Ukraine reportedly hit a russian oil refinery and targeted Moscow during an attack involving a wave of at least 121 drones, one of the largest single operations of its kind during the war.

Elsewhere, Ukrainian authorities said three people were killed and one was injured when a russian drone hit a residential building in the Kyiv region.

The air in Davos is filled with the feeling of an approaching ceasefire. This is felt both among politicians and business leaders. The mood has definitely changed. This happened after the inauguration of President Trump. People expect that things will change and that this will have a concrete impact on the war in Ukraine. I wonder why Trump, who is quite bellicose and dictatorial toward many other countries, is so complimentary of Russia and so intent on arranging a cease fire?

Could it be that his prime motivation is to save Russia from economic collapse and Putin from being deposed for the disastrous war he started? He has long wanted to build hotels and other businesses there.

Those are some interesting speculations / rumors. I hope they are true. Free and fair elections need to be a condition of support from the US. Like everyone else, I don't know what Trump considers to be "must-haves" from the negotiations. I think Putin knows he is no longer up against a feeble-minded and overcautious US president, so he may be more flexible. The sticking point may be actual security guarantees for Ukraine, which Trump will insist on, but Putin will resist. At which point Trump will have to turn up the heat on Russia, something Biden would never have done.

I'm glad you're feeling better. Don't overwork yourself, even though that is a temptation for you, as a person with strong ethics.
