I remain extremely worried about what will happen to Ukraine two or three years hence after Russia rearms.

I am very surprised when everyone expects russia to rearm in this time, and others do not. Europe has more than 500 million people and an economy hundreds of times larger than russia ...

Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer sought to wrestle control of negotiations over the russia-Ukraine war away from the US on Sunday, hosting dozens of European leaders and outlining a pathway towards peace on a pivotal day of diplomacy in London. Starmer told the BBC that Britain would work with France, and “possibly one or two others,” on crafting a plan to stop the fighting in Ukraine, and then “discuss that plan with the United States.” Yesterday Zelensky and Starmer signed an agreement to accelerate $2.8 billion worth of loans to Ukraine. The first tranche of funding is expected to be disbursed next week, according to the UK government. https://edition.cnn.com/2025/03/02/europe/ukraine-russia-zelensky-starmer-summit-intl/index.html

Starmer says that any new deal to support Ukraine must be backed by strength, and that every nation must contribute in the best way it can, by all taking responsibility and stepping up their own share.

The prime minister says leaders at the summit agreed four important steps:
- To keep military aid flowing into Ukraine while the war is ongoing, and increase economic pressure on russia
- Any lasting peace must ensure Ukraine's sovereignty and security, and Ukraine must be at the table for any peace talks
- In the event of a peace deal, European leaders will aim to deter any future invasion by russia into Ukraine
- There would be a "coalition of the willing" to defend Ukraine and guarantee peace in the country
www.bbc.com/news/live/cn5220x56pqt?post=asset%3Adcc3ead2-34ff-40e8-b8f2-18f6da7a8617#post

Starmer also announces that the UK government will allow Ukraine to use £1.6bn of UK export finance to buy more than five thousand air defence missiles. He says these will be made in Belfast, creating jobs in the UK's defence sector. He says the goal is to put Ukraine in the strongest position so they can negotiate from a position of strength.
https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cn5220x56pqt?post=asset%3A6b7eb6de-4ad2-4879-8394-a02362e409ca#post

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a declaration to accelerate the provision of military aid to Israel worth about $4 billion. https://www.state.gov/military-assistance-to-israel/

Nuclear weapons would help Ukraine resist russian aggression. After the failed talks between the presidents of Ukraine and the United States in Washington on February 28, which ended in conflict and Trump's accusations against Zelensky that he did not want peace, Ukrainians began to raise money for a "nuclear weapon".

The fundraising for the production of nuclear weapons for Ukraine, at the request of Ukrainians, was opened by the co-founder of Monobank (the largest virtual bank in Ukraine) Oleg Horokhovsky at about 1 a.m. on March 1. In the first half hour of the collection alone, Ukrainians raised 2 million hryvnias. https://news.telegraf.com.ua/ukr/ukraina/2025-03-01/5900140-ukraintsy-nachali-sobirat-dengi-na-yaderku-posle-ssory-zelenskogo-i-trampa-skolko-millionov-uzhe-est

He later explained that he didn't mean it. https://news.telegraf.com.ua/ukr/ukraina/2025-03-02/5900245-zbir-na-yaderku-viyavivsya-zhartom-ukraintsi-obureni?traffic_source=ukr.net

Such a joke could lead to Ukrainians stopping donating to real volunteers altogether...

Wlad, what metric did you use you to compare the Russian economy to that of Europe? Two references I checked using GDP as the metric indicated that the European economy is about 10 times that of Russia, not hundreds of times.

It seems good news that Starmer and some other European nations have said they will provide money and weapons to Ukraine, especially since it appears at the moment that Trump is unlikely to do so.

When there is a war, it matters how many planes, cars and weapons your economy can produce.

In December 2024, it was reported that the total aircraft delivery in the year for Airbus has reached 643 units, with 84 planes delivered in November 2024 alone. Subsequently in January 2025, it was reported that Airbus have successfully delivered 766 aircraft to its customers out of 878 orders in the entire 2024 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbus

Over the past three years, russia has produced seven Superjet 100 aircrafts. https://www.bbc.com/russian/articles/cn8g94x4d55o

President Donald Trump ordered a pause to all US military aid to Ukraine, turning up the heat on Volodymyr Zelensky days after an Oval Office blowup with the Ukrainian president left support from his country’s most important ally in doubt.

The US is holding up all pending military assistance until Trump determines Ukraine’s leaders demonstrate a good-faith commitment to peace, according to a senior Defense Department official, who asked not to be identified discussing private deliberations. It will also review the aid to make sure it’s contributing to a solution to the conflict.

The impact was felt immediately along the Polish border with Ukraine at a key aiport, one that serves as a transit hub for the transport of weapons and medical supplies.

“This of course is putting Ukraine and Poland in a more difficult situation,” said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in a statement. “But we have to cope with this situation. So there is no point in being offended by reality here.”

The order applies to all US military equipment not currently in Ukraine, including weapons in transit on aircraft and ships or waiting in transit areas in Poland. While the extent of the affected weapons isn’t immediately known, Trump had inherited from former President Joe Biden the authority to deliver $3.85 billion in weapons from US stockpiles.

The freeze in American aid poses a severe strategic problem for Ukraine, which has become reliant on military and economic support from its Western partners as it tries to repel russia's three-year-old invasion and stave off President Vladimir putin's push for a peace deal beneficial to Moscow. Experts say Ukraine and its European partners now produce most of the weaponry destined for the battlefield. But there are crucial American systems that Kyiv will struggle to replace - first of all, air defense systems, including Patriot.

In his first comments following Trump's announcement, Zelensky - while not commenting directly on the aid pause - said Ukraine is ready to come back to the table and sign the minerals deal "in any time and in any convenient format."
https://abcnews.go.com/International/ukraine-europe-react-shocking-trump-aid-freeze/story?id=119416808

The prospect of confronting russia without American weapons, equipment and intelligence, which has long been unthinkable for Ukraine, seems to be becoming a reality. Ukraine is likely to exhaust its last stocks of American weapons and ammunition in “two to three months”.

This is stated in an article in the Financial Times, citing sources in Ukrainian intelligence.

“After that, it will be very difficult for us. It will not be a complete collapse, but we will be forced to retreat faster,” the source said.

The termination of US military aid will have major consequences for the Ukrainian army, even if European allies partially fill the shortage on the front with their weapons. Of particular importance for Ukraine, US support included intelligence sharing, which, according to reports, has not yet been stopped.
https://www.ft.com/content/b4393738-c7da-47ca-82db-99c2c052afec

At a closed session of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence, a negative scenario regarding the possible suspension of military aid from the United States to Ukraine was considered.

This was stated by People's Deputy, member of the Rada Defense Committee Fedor Venislavsky in a commentary to RBC-Ukraine.

According to Venislavsky, Ukraine has a margin of safety for about six months even without systematic support from the United States. However, the situation will become significantly more complicated, so work is currently underway to find alternative sources of supply of critically important weapons. https://tsn.ua/ukrayina/venislavskiy-pro-prizupinennya-dopomogi-vid-ssha-yakiy-zapas-micnosti-lishivsya-v-ukrayini-ta-scho-robiti-dali-2779689.html

US Vice President J.D. Vance said that the best way to protect Ukraine from russia is to guarantee US financial interest in Ukraine's future, the Guardian writes. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/mar/04/jd-vance-hannity-interview-fox-trump-zelenskyy-ukraine-military-aid

The basic law of business: "protect your investment" had a good chance of being implemented.

In Ukraine, there have been many jokes recently about news that people are advised not to read.

Trump’s cut to Ukrainian military aid could leave millions of civilians exposed to russian ballistic missiles https://edition.cnn.com/2025/03/05/world/trump-cut-ukrainian-aid-patriot-missiles-intl/index.html

The US has stopped sharing all intelligence with Kyiv, a Ukrainian source has told Sky News - https://news.sky.com/story/us-stops-sharing-all-intelligence-with-ukraine-source-tells-sky-news-13322070

By stopping the transfer of intelligence, the US has effectively disabled the HIMARS MLRS for Ukrainians, The Economist journalist Oliver Carroll said on the social network X - https://x.com/olliecarroll/status/1897340316942000271?t=mm_SNmqDzgotKFQWgFUQLg

The US has suspended operations and planning for offensive cyber operations against russia, a senior US official told CNN - https://edition.cnn.com/politics/live-news/trump-administration-zelensky-news-03-02-25#cm7s95k0g000l3b6mkuvrclbo

The mysterious radio station UVB-76, also known as "doomsday radio" and "buzzer", has broadcast a record number of messages after russia and the United States held talks in Saudi Arabia and Turkey, The Moscow Times reports https://t.me/moscowtimes_ru/30694

After Zelensky's failed meeting with Trump, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine unexpectedly issued a statement published on its website:
On behalf of the Ukrainian people, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine expresses its profound gratitude to President Donald Trump, the United States Congress, and the American people for their firm and consistent support of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as for the security assistance packages provided to Ukraine, which have helped stabilize the situation on the frontline. https://www.rada.gov.ua/en/news/News/top_news/259373.html

This is no longer about how to move past a bad meeting and sign an agreement. It’s about how much Zelensky and the people of Ukraine collectively must be punished on the altar of Trump’s ego and how much they must prostrate themselves at his feet in apology before he relents.

Trump is a marvelous useful idiot for Russia, assuming he isn’t actually a Kremlin asset.

I've finally caught up with the reading here. Several days ago when I watched Starmer's "coalition of the willing" speech, I found it to be very confusing and contradictory in some respects. The main contradiction is that, as everyone noted, he is trying to wrest negotiations away from the US and presenting his peace negotiations as Europe "going it alone." Which is exactly what many of us would like to see, Europe defending Europe. He said there will be British and European boots on the ground to defend a peace agreement - all good, so far... but then he adds "with strong US support," which undermines his entire message up to that point. So, it seems Starmer is engaging in the typical European doublespeak where they want to be in charge and have the respect of nations that can hold their own, but then rely on a country that is an ocean away if they get themselves into trouble. Of course he was very vague about what "strong US support" means, but if it means Americans on the ground or in the air, that probably isn't going to happen.
I think Starmer is aware that if UK troops are in Ukraine and are attacked by Russia, that would not trigger Article 5. So, perhaps he's fishing for a reaction from Washington on that contingency. I'm not sure.
I had a visit with my brother and his wife (whose family is from Ukraine, and some of them died in Siberian prison camps after the war) and we were discussing how they all had said that the Russians are never, ever, to be believed. Some things never change.

I think that Trump continues the same US policy towards russia. And if Biden weakened russia, then Trump's task now is to establish control over it. And no one will take into account Ukraine's interests in this. As for the meeting, everything that happened there was a consequence, and not a cause.

Diplomacy in Ukraine is something very original. Ukraine's UK ambassador Valerii Zaluzhny at Chatham House in London said "Because we see, it's not just the axis of evil and russia trying to revise the world order – but the US is finally destroying this order." https://news.sky.com/story/ukraine-war-trump-zelenskyy-putin-russia-moscow-live-sky-news-latest-12541713?postid=9225936#liveblog-body

The US is “destroying” the current world order, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom has said, in unusually blunt comments that come just as Ukraine is trying to patch up ties with the US after the disastrous White House meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump, writes CNN. https://edition.cnn.com/2025/03/06/europe/us-world-order-ukraine-zaluzhnyi-intl/index.html

In both cases it doesn't matter what happens or what you really think, what matters is what consequences it will have for your country. I don’t think anything will improve the already poor relations between the US and Ukraine.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview: Well, I think an important thing to understand about last Friday is not last Friday.  It’s everything that led up to it.  It’s been very clear from the beginning that President Trump views this as a protracted, stalemated conflict.  And frankly, it’s a proxy war between nuclear powers – the United States, helping Ukraine, and russia – and it needs to come to an end.  And no one has any idea or any plan to bring it to an end.  The plan of the Ukrainians up to now and their allies on Capitol Hill and the people you talk to in other countries is let’s just keep giving them as much as they need for as long as it takes.  That’s not a strategy. https://www.state.gov/secretary-of-state-marco-rubio-with-sean-hannity-of-fox-news/

Ukraine’s troops dying because US cut aid, say soldiers on front line. Morale is ‘dangerously low’ on the battlefield and the fighting has become ferocious, warn combat medics.

Ukrainian soldiers are dying because of Donald Trump’s decision to end military aid to Ukraine, front-line troops have told The Telegraph. Soldiers revealed how they were feeling the pressure of dwindling American supplies and the looming summer months, when battles usually become more ferocious, and fear they have lost any initiative.

But their view on the war has become even more pessimistic following President Trump’s announcement on Wednesday that the US would cease to provide intelligence to Ukraine, leaving morale dangerously low.

“We are not the ones advancing over the last few months,” said combat medic Slava, 27, speaking from a village on the border between the Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk regions.

“It’s sad to say, but we don’t have initiative on the battlefield any more.” https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2025/03/05/ukraines-troops-dying-over-us-aid-cut-off-say-soldiers/

Belgium has postponed the delivery of F16 fighter jets to Ukraine until 2026. However, spare parts may be provided as early as this year, Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever told reporters in Brussels. https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/liveblog/koning-filip-ontvangt-president-zelensky-op-het-paleis-we-gaan~1741235439479/

Europe's arms firms are ready and willing to step up to fill a defence gap left by U.S. President Donald Trump's pause on military aid for Ukraine, but getting there will take time and depend on how fast political pledges turn into contracts.
Europeans are racing to boost military spending, with European Union leaders set to discuss a proposal to mobilise up to 800 billion euros ($840 billion) at an emergency defence summit on Thursday.
The region's defence firms - which saw a major stock rally on Monday on prospects for more spending - are bullish that they can ramp up production.
But they warned delivery times could stretch into years and said expanding production would depend on governments backing their pledges with spending and fresh contracts.
"Does Europe have the necessary technology to produce the full spectrum of defence equipment that it needs? The answer is yes," Thales CEO Patrice Caine told reporters as the French firm's share hit a record high after forecast-beating earnings.
"It is more a question for buyers, governments and armies... When the contracts come we will be ready, but there is no point in being ready too far in advance." https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/thales-ceo-says-european-defence-capacity-tied-orders-2025-03-04/

Four senior members of Donald Trump’s entourage have held secret discussions with some of Kyiv’s top political opponents to Volodymyr Zelensky, just as Washington aligns with Moscow in seeking to lever the Ukrainian president out of his job.

The senior Trump allies held talks with Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, a remorselessly ambitious former prime minister, and senior members of the party of Petro Poroshenko, Zelensky’s immediate predecessor as president, according to three Ukrainian parliamentarians and a U.S. Republican foreign policy expert. https://www.politico.eu/article/donald-trump-allies-secret-talks-volodymyr-zelenskyy-opposition-ukraine-elections-yulia-tymoshenko-petro-poroshenko/

People's Deputies Petro Poroshenko and Yulia Tymoshenko stated that they are not discussing the issue of the upcoming elections with their American partners, as Politico reported.

According to him, his team is working with American partners publicly and transparently and even suggested that the Ukrainian authorities coordinate these meetings. The purpose of such cooperation is, they say, to maintain bipartisan support.

Talks with US representatives in such cases concern the supply of weapons, intelligence, sanctions against russia, financial support, etc. At the same time, Poroshenko assures that his team is against elections during the war. Instead, they should take place only after a ceasefire and the signing of a peace agreement with security guarantees for Ukraine. https://hromadske.ua/personaliyi/240924-poroshenko-poiasnyv-iaki-rozmovy-vede-z-administratsiyeiu-ssha-kaze-pro-vybory-ne-ydetsia?traffic_source=ukr.net

Of course we will believe it.

The threat of a prolonged war in Ukraine without military backing from the United States is leading European Union politicians to contemplate the emergence of a fresh wave of huge numbers of refugees. https://www.politico.eu/article/trump-threats-prompt-eu-to-plan-for-fresh-ukraine-refugee-wave/

Today I woke up very early from a severe pain in my leg, which was cramping. This is the second time this year and probably next time I need to see a doctor. I just lay in bed for a couple of hours waiting for the pain to subside and I could get up. Even getting to the toilet was a difficult task and I kept thinking that it would be better to stay home today. I have always listened to my intuition, but recently it has become a vital necessity. So I stayed home, as did half of my office sick with the flu. But this did not save us from a large amount of work. It is good that our working tools are only computers and phones, although our boss insists that everyone work in the office.

I did not leave conflicting feelings when during the day I watched from the window how manhunters hunted down some poor man right on the street. They use private cars, which they use to cut someone off on the street or chase until the person collapses from fatigue, after which they put him in a car and take him to the mobilization center. They say they don't touch people with small children, but your dog will probably have to go home alone.

I've only seen old movies about Nazi Germany and stalinist russia where people were grabbed on the streets and taken away in cars. Usually they never came back...

Looking at this everyday tragedy, I thanked God for the sign and I wondered how many more people would have to die and for what?

I totally agree, Wlad - "how many more will have to die and for what?" I think a poll taken in the trenches would be pretty overwhelming for finding some compromise.

I chuckled at your comment about future security assurances: "Of course we will believe it." No one, no one, no one will blame Ukraine for not believing it after the Budapest memorandum. I have heard Bill Clinton say that he regrets pressuring Ukraine to give up its nukes, but I have never heard Obama or anyone in Europe say that they regretted not stepping in during the Crimea annexation.

The grabbing people off the streets reminded me of my sister in law's stories yesterday about Stalin plucking her grandfathers (who were citizens of Ukraine) out of their homes, without trial and never to be seen again.

My leg still hurt today, but I can walk with a limp, so I went to the office. Many people are sick with the flu and I have to catch one thing or another, compensating for the lack of people.

In the morning, a message came that the air raid alarm had been cancelled, which had been going on almost all night, but I heard nothing. However, not everything was quiet.

On the night of March 7, russia launched a massive missile strike across Ukraine. Missiles from Tu-95MS and Kalibr bombers from the Black Sea attacked almost all regions of Ukraine, with strikes reported even in Ivano-Frankivsk region and Ternopil in the west of the country.

According to the Ukrainian military, the main target of the combined strike was the gas industry.

During the night, russia launched 67 missiles and 194 drones, the Ukrainian Air Force said. The attack involved Kh-101/Kh-55SM and Kalibr cruise missiles, Iskander M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, S-300 anti-aircraft guided missiles, Kh-59/69 guided aircraft missiles, as well as strike drones and drone simulators.

The Ukrainian military emphasizes that for the first time, French Mirage-2000 fighters, which entered the Armed Forces of Ukraine's service last month, participated in repelling the attack, but the effectiveness of air defense is decreasing and almost half of the missiles and drones are already reaching their targets. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/ckg8y6k4d9go

A number of Ukrainian media outlets, military and military intelligence agencies reported that the russians managed to advance in Kursk to the important Sumy-Sudzha supply route from the east and put Ukrainian troops on russian territory at risk of encirclement. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cd653y7pjwqo

Aerospace company Maxar Technologies has disabled access to its satellite images for Ukraine.

"The official justification that users received from the Maxar administration was "upon an administrative request." In fact, the shutdown was a consequence of the US government's ban on providing intelligence data to Ukraine. https://censor.net/ru/n3539783

The Trump administration’s special envoy to Ukraine and russia Keith Kellogg said Thursday that Ukraine “brought it on themselves” in regard to the cutoff of intelligence sharing from the US. https://edition.cnn.com/2025/03/06/politics/kellogg-trump-ukraine-envoy-intelligence-pause/index.html

Donald Trump says he's finding it "more difficult" to deal with Ukraine, in remarks delivered to reporters in the Oval Office. It comes after he said he was "strongly considering" large-scale sanctions and tariffs on russia until a peace deal was reached.

At this time, Zelensky continues to do what he does best - travel around the world and ask for money. True, recently he has only been welcomed in Europe, and not all of it, and instead of money, he increasingly receives support only in words.
https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cg70jylp32gt

During a speech at the European Council meeting in Brussels, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced the resumption of cooperation with the United States and a quick meeting in Saudi Arabia.

Europe seems to be starting to wake up and plans to allocate 800 billion euros for rearmament.

US President Donald Trump said he was considering new sanctions and tariffs against russia after a wave of overnight missile strikes on Ukraine. Trump also appealed to russia and Ukraine: "Sit down at the table right now, before it's too late. Thank you!!!" https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c07zvn3285vo

The grabbing people off the streets reminded me of my sister in law's stories yesterday about Stalin plucking her grandfathers (who were citizens of Ukraine) out of their homes, without trial and never to be seen again.

Today I heard the idea that in order to understand whether Ukraine is really against the end of the war, or only the authorities are against it, we can conduct a thought experiment. For the duration of the truce, martial law should be lifted, the borders opened, and people allowed to leave the Armed Forces of Ukraine at their own will. Most people understand what the result will be. It is also proposed to check whether this will be done during the truce.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China will continue to retaliate for the United States’ “arbitrary tariffs” and accused Washington of “meeting good with evil”.

Regarding the Trump administration’s policy of safeguarding U.S. interests above international cooperation, Wang said such an approach, if adopted by every country in the world, would result in the “law of the jungle.”

“Small and weak countries will get burnt first, and the international order and rules will be under severe shock,” Wang said. “Major countries should undertake their international obligations … and not seek to profit from and bully the weak.”

On the Ukraine war, Wang reiterated China’s stance of supporting conflict resolution through political negotiations. Wang said that in hindsight, the Ukraine conflict “could have been avoided.” https://apnews.com/article/china-congress-tariffs-trump-967edbb35667963f0daeb949ee5c863c

I came across a very interesting idea that the stereotypical view of China's role in this war is that it is helping russia in every way, although it could easily have ordered its junior partner to stop fighting. It is believed that Donald Trump is currently getting closer to Moscow precisely in order to break its tandem with Beijing. However, in the real world, everything is not so clear-cut. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c8j01408wyvo

Your thought experiment is borne out by the country's policies, aren't they? For examples, a closed border and I'm also pretty sure that the man who you witnessed being chased down for mobilization would like to see something worked out by diplomacy.
Your quote by the Chinese spokesman Wang is ironic and typical of the doublethink that Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn spoke about under the Soviets: Wang believes that relationships between countries should be worked out peacefully, but cannot envision working things out peacefully with China's citizens. For them, it's either comply or go to prison.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that “Made in Ukraine” is printed on the Blizzard Rustler 9 skis I purchased recently! According to internet sources the plant is in Mukachevo.

Blizzard is a long time Austrian ski manufacturer, presently owned by Tecnica Group of Italy.
