Another quiet night. But the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv has received information concerning a potentially significant air attack that may occur at any time over the next several days.  The Embassy, as always, recommends U.S. citizens be prepared to immediately shelter in the event an air alert is announced. https://ua.usembassy.gov/security-alert-u-s-embassy-kyiv-ukraine-may-9-2025/

European leaders on Saturday upped the pressure on russian President Vladimir putin to accept a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine without any conditions attached, warning that Western allies would impose further sanctions on Moscow and ramp up military support for Kyiv if Moscow does not comply.

Crucially, U.S. President Donald Trump backs the European demands and is also willing to contribute to the implementation and surveillance of a potential ceasefire — at least that's what the European side says.

putin must issue "no more ifs and buts, no more conditions and delays" but accept the ceasefire and work on a lasting peace deal, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer told reporters following the meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the presidents of France, Poland and Ukraine.

The leaders from the four Kyiv allies had traveled to the Ukrainian capital together by train for a visit of more than nine hours with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The visit came shortly after Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov rejected calls for an extended ceasefire as long as the West doesn't stop its military support for Kyiv. https://www.politico.eu/article/european-leaders-win-trumps-support-to-pressure-putin-into-unconditional-ceasefire/
https://ua.news/ua/ukraine/do-kiyeva-pribuli-makron-stramer-merts-ta-tusk

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Vladimir putin expressed his readiness to start peace talks without preconditions during a visit to Moscow by Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

“President putin highly appreciated China’s objective and fair stance on the Ukrainian crisis and expressed his readiness to start peace talks without preconditions, hoping to reach a fair and lasting peace agreement,” Wang Yi was quoted as saying by China’s state-run Xinhua news agency. http://www.news.cn/world/20250510/afb61996b5e04410ba97577379fee46c/c.html

In the afternoon of May 10, Donald Trump announced that "India and Pakistan have agreed to a complete and immediate ceasefire." This was confirmed by Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cpw75z2805yo

This is good news because Pakistan has been an important supplier of weapons to Ukraine, which it may need itself in the event of an escalation of the conflict with India.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has delivered 19 additional M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks to Poland, bringing the total to 48 new tanks received in 2025. Deliveries are part of a 250-tank intergovernmental agreement signed in April 2022, soon after russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The full package includes:
‣ 250 x M1A2 SEPv3 MBTs
‣ 26 x M88A2 Hercules recovery vehicles
‣ 17 x M107kJ tactical bridge systems
Poland already operates 116 M1A1 FEP tanks, delivered by July 2024 under a separate U.S.-backed contract.

Iran is preparing to deliver in the near future launchers for short-range ballistic missiles that the U.S. said Tehran sent to russia last year for use against Ukraine, according to two Western security officials and a regional official. Iran denied it had such plans and dismissed the idea as "utterly absurd".

The delivery of the Fath-360 launchers - if it occurs - would help support russia's grinding assault on its neighbor and reaffirm the deepening security ties between Moscow and Tehran.
With a 75-mile (120-km) range, the Fath-360 would give Moscow's forces a new weapon to fire at Ukrainian frontline troops, nearby military targets, and population centers close to the border with russia, analysts said.

russia's deployment of the missiles could complicate U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts to arrange, opens new tab a ceasefire and peace talks between Ukraine and russia and to strike a separate deal with Iran to curb its nuclear program. The regional official said that the indirect U.S.-Iran nuclear talks mediated by Oman are among "several reasons" for the delayed delivery of the launchers. https://www.reuters.com/world/iran-send-russia-launchers-short-range-missiles-sources-say-2025-05-09/

It sounds like things are moving in the right direction at least a tiny bit. Still continuing to pray that a lasting peace can be found!

I agree. And good news of the tank deliveries, which is welcome news since there were reports that aid had been stopped again.

There is almost no information about the supply of weapons to Ukraine, but it seems that something is being supplied, because the russians still have not managed to accelerate the offensive.
It seems that now the main battles have again shifted to the field of diplomacy.

President putin slammed European powers for talking to russia "in a boorish manner and with the help of ultimatums".

He didn't go into detail. He didn't need to.

This was clearly his response to the ultimatum set by European leaders in Kyiv.

They had warned Moscow that if russia didn't agree to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire from Monday, there will be more sanctions against russia and more military assistance for Ukraine.

On Saturday, Sir Keir Starmer said that "if he [putin] is serious about peace, then he has a chance to show it".

The Kremlin's response: we're serious, but we'll show it our way.

putin's way (his counter proposal) is direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul next Thursday.

But, crucially, no immediate ceasefire.
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cy4edj818ngo

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he is ready to meet russian President Vladimir putin "personally" in Istanbul on Thursday for talks over ending the war.

His post on X came shortly after Donald Trump demanded Ukraine agree to Putin's offer of direct talks between the two countries in Turkey.

On Sunday Trump then posted on social media that Ukraine should agree to this "immediately" and it would provide clarity on whether there was a way to end the war.
In a late-night address on Saturday, Putin invited Ukraine to take part in "serious negotiations" over the war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Putin said he could "not rule out" the possibility that the talks could result in Russia and Ukraine agreeing "a new truce" - but did not address the calls for a 30-day ceasefire directly.

The Russian leader said: "This would be the first step towards a long-term, lasting peace, rather than a prologue to more armed hostilities after the Ukrainian armed forces get new armaments and personnel, after feverish trench-digging and the establishment of new command posts."
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ckgxrm0lnego

Apparently, Zelensky believes that his own order from 2022 about the impossibility of negotiations with putin does not apply to him. https://www.president.gov.ua/documents/6792022-44249

Today, May 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a bill approved by the Verkhovna Rada on the ratification of the Ukraine-US minerals agreement. https://gordonua.com/ukr/news/politics/zelenskij-pidpisav-zakon-pro-ratifikatsiju-uhodi-zi-ssha-pro-ukrajinski-nadra-1742173.html

Some believe that as of today, all holders of mineral extraction permits in Ukraine have actually lost them.

As the BBC piece noted, Putin is open to peace but only on his terms.

It’s hopeful in some measure that Trump hasn’t abandoned the search for peace. Unfortunately, toward Putin he acts like a weak parent with a badly behaved child, scolding and threatening but without any consequence (at least three known times according to Perplexity). This will not work any better with Putin than it does with a child.

During the negotiations with Ukraine, which are scheduled to take place on May 15 in Turkey, russia plans to once again raise the issue of recognizing the occupied Ukrainian territories as part of its state. This was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, russian media reported.

According to him, the negotiations will concern a “permanent settlement” of the conflict and “realities on the ground”, in particular territorial issues.

In his statement, Ryabkov once again voiced the Kremlin’s narratives, in particular about the “denazification of the Kyiv regime” and the need to “recognize new realities”, referring to the illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories.
https://sud.ua/uk/news/abroad/330905-rossiya-ozvuchila-trebovaniya-pered-peregovorami-v-turtsii

Also, it seems that none of the first persons except Zelensky are planning to participate in the negotiations on May 15.

Instead, in the office, the main topic of discussion today was the mandatory registration of pets, which actually was introduced back in 2007, but attention to this issue was drawn to the announcement of the Kyiv City State Administration regarding the possibility of doing this in city registration departments. https://www.unian.ua/society/reyestraciya-domashnih-tvarin-v-ukrajini-hto-zobov-yazaniy-reyestruvati-13007286.html

Due to the manipulative wording of news headlines by journalists, dog owners are outraged and consider this an attack on their pets, because no one had done this before and no one was fined for lack of registration.

Where I live dogs must be licensed yearly for $15, or $50 if not neutered or spayed. The fees are used to defray pet related expenses such as running the county animal shelter and reduced cost or free vaccinations, and some veterinary services, for those who cannot afford to pay (dogs and cats must have a current vaccination against rabies.) This is typical in most places in the US.

Non-compliance is a petty offense with a penalty of up to $150 for each occurrence. However there are a substantial number of owners who don’t bother to license their dogs, and some don’t have their pets properly vaccinated for rabies and other serious diseases.

Zelensky is sent into the arena alone. Clearly nothing favorable to Ukraine can result without participation from Europe and the US.

When people have no influence over big national issues, or are exhausted by them or both, they tend to be overly concerned about the small local issues, especially those they might have some influence over.

The BBC published an article about increasing Polish discontent with Ukrainian refugees. It appears to be influenced from campaigning for upcoming elections by two right wing candidates who are demonizing the refugees and claiming Ukraine started the war.

It’s difficult to know from the article how widespread this is. Wlad, I hope that your family is unaffected.

Unfortunately, and to my personal disgust, the United States under Trump has added support to such people because of his statements revising history of the war and in support of Russia and against Ukraine along with those of some of his negotiators.

Agree.

I think it still depends on time, culture, and local circumstances. For example, I'm sure that a dog in the US now has more rights than a man in Ukraine.

A few days ago, a video went viral on social media showing an employee of one of the Kharkov recruitment centers beating a man near a water dispenser. The mayor of Kharkov, Ihor Terekhov, reacted to this incident, stressing that “many worthy people work in mobilization centers who sincerely serve Ukraine. However, cases like this one strike at the trust in the state and devalue the feat of true defenders.”

According to him, the victim is a history and human rights teacher and an 8th grade homeroom teacher.

“The man had the legal right to a reservation and provided the relevant documents during a meeting with representatives of the mobilization center. All this is recorded in the published footage, as well as the fact that he did not violate the law, did not provoke a conflict, and did not resist. He behaved calmly and did not show any aggression, but this did not stop the use of force against him,” Ihor Terekhov emphasized. https://sud.ua/uk/news/ukraine/331013-mer-kharkova-povidomiv-scho-cholovik-yakogo-pobili-sluzhbovtsi-ttsk-vchitel-istoriyi-z-bronyuvannyam

Censorship is also intensifying in Ukraine. Authorities have banned access to a website that covered cases of corruption and raiding - antikor.com.ua. https://focus.ua/uk/ukraine/706013-derzhspeczv-yazku-obmezhila-dostup-do-saytu-antikor-prichina

I didn't have time to read the article about corruption in mobilization centers https://antikor.com.ua/articles/768095-ukrainskie_ttsk_ehegodno_poluchajut_do_2_milliardov_evro_vzjatok_-_nardep_mikisha

Fortunately, access to the main world media is still open and, for example, from the Reuters website we can learn that the russian economy is in an increasingly precarious state as a result of a shift to a war mode and of Western sanctions over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, a report by the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE) said on Tuesday.
The report, prepared for talks of European Union finance ministers, said that while still relatively stable, the russian economy was only superficially resilient and that underlying imbalances and structural weaknesses were growing.
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russian-economy-worse-shape-than-moscow-says-report-eu-shows-2025-05-13/

russia is likely preparing for a larger offensive and is shifting forces to key hot spots on the battlefield. This comes amid a proposal by russian dictator Vladimir putin to hold direct talks with Ukraine.

Many military experts also warn that instead of stopping the fighting, russia will try to launch another offensive, the Financial Times writes, citing Ukrainian intelligence officials.

This is definitely related to the elections. Fortunately, my family is financially independent of the assistance, which is constantly being reduced, and the children already know Polish no worse than Poles and do not stand out. It also depends on the circle of communication, although in general they still feel like they are in a foreign country.

My son occasionally announces his intention to return to Ukraine. He doesn't understand that the Ukraine he left from no longer exists. And I'm not sure that if he finds life in Poland difficult, that he will have enough strength to live in Ukraine.

I have once again learned that I feel bad when I get tired and when the weather changes. But when these events coincide, I feel really bad. So today I stayed home and tried very hard to do something at work. Hopefully tomorrow I will feel better and I will be able to go to the office for our usual weekly meeting, which I always try to hold in person. Still, a good team inspires and really gives me strength. The feeling that we have done everything well during the week allows us not to think about work on the weekend and to have a quality rest by switching to something else.

It was probably expected for everyone, except for Zelensky, that no one showed up for the peace talks in Turkey except him. Perhaps because he flew to Ankara, and the negotiations were supposed to take place in Istanbul. This would be funny if it weren't so sad, and if it weren't happening to my unfortunate country.

In fact, we have witnessed another attempt to look good while playing a bad game, which once again demonstrated to the whole world the attitude towards Ukraine in the person of Zelensky or to Zelensky, which has consequences for the entire country, from those on whom the fate of Ukraine depends - putin and Trump. I generally get the impression that they are already acting together as allies.

President Donald Trump told reporters that when it comes to peace talks between russia and Ukraine, “nothing is going to happen until” he meets with russian President Vladimir putin.

“Nothing’s gonna happen until putin and I get together, ok? And obviously — he wasn’t going to go. He was going to go, but he thought I was going. He wasn’t going if I wasn’t there and I don’t believe anything’s going to happen, whether you like it or not, until he and I get together. But we’re going to have to get it solved because too many people are dying,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One as he landed in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he won’t meet with any russian representatives in Turkey besides putin. He called the delegation who showed up Thursday “phony.”
https://edition.cnn.com/world/live-news/ukraine-russia-talks-istanbul-turkey-intl#cmapbfiws000n3b6mzizckiyr

The composition of the russian delegation proposed for the negotiations is not even ministers, but people one or two ranks lower. The delegation from Ukraine will now be headed by the Minister of Defense - Rustam Umerov. https://www.bbc.com/news/live/c74nxrr7mwkt

As Ukrainian and russian officials prepare to potentially meet in Turkey, russia is amassing forces on the frontlines for a possible new offensive intended to capture more Ukrainian territory, two US officials with knowledge of the latest US assessments told CNN.

russian commanders “aspire to generate a big force,” the first US official said, adding that the likely offensive is focused on gaining more ground in eastern Ukraine.

“putin will attempt to take whatever land he can get right up to the outskirts of Kyiv,” the second US official said. “The russians are going to make every effort to get what they can.”
https://edition.cnn.com/world/live-news/ukraine-russia-talks-istanbul-turkey-intl#cmapbfiws000n3b6mzizckiyr

On Thursday, May 15, the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) began conducting counterintelligence (security) measures in Lviv, which will last until May 18.

As reported by the SSU Department in the Lviv region, the National Police, the Military Law Enforcement Service, and the National Guard are involved in the measures.

"The actions of law enforcement officers will cover the entire city. The goal is to prevent and neutralize threats of intelligence and subversive activities against our state and increase the security of citizens in the conditions of russian armed aggression against Ukraine.

Security measures are taking into account the legal regime of martial law," the SSU said. https://sud.ua/uk/news/ukraine/331096-sbu-provodit-kontrrazvedyvatelnye-meropriyatiya-vo-lvove-skolko-dney-prodlyatsya

It seems strange to search for russian saboteurs near the western border, hundreds of miles from the front. This is not the first time I have heard the opinion that martial law in Ukraine mainly serves only one purpose - to be a cover for the authorities to restrict people's rights and freedoms without limits.

The only thing worse than disgust for the regime is the awareness of the pain felt by the people who enable it to continue to commit lawlessness and who unwittingly protect it.

Today I received a call from a radio amateur friend who volunteered to fight on February 24, 2022 and got stuck in the army. He asked how his son could get a new passport in the Netherlands, where he became an adult as a refugee during this time. The Ukrainian authorities have made it impossible for men to obtain documents without prior registration at a mobilization center, which has left many men without documents at all. Instead, most automatically receive fines. I advised him to use this as a basis for applying for permanent residence status or Dutch citizenship. This friend cursed his decision to go to war, which made him a slave with no hope of returning from the army, despite the injuries and concussions he received. I hope we will live to see the day when we can see our children and each other again.

It seems more and more that openly corrupt kakistocracy is the natural or ascendant form of government in many places despite a remanent veneer of democracy. It’s not such a big step from that to fascism. It’s ironic that Putin’s invasion excuse of “Nazis” in Ukraine is now much closer to reality because of the devolution of the government into authoritarianism.

Thankfully your family is safe in Poland. I wish that you were there with them.

putin's Nazi fiction is designed exclusively for brainwashed russians, who are trying to convince that Ukrainians have fallen under the influence of the West, which they associate with fascism/Nazism, the difference between which few russians know. For Ukrainians, accusing them of Nazism is nonsense because there have never been any conflicts in Ukraine due to nationality or religion. In the minds of Ukrainians, there is no idea of their national superiority over others. Therefore, the Nazis are more likely russians with their insane chauvinism and the intention to destroy the national identity of other peoples.

And this has nothing to do with authoritarianism, which is the dominant form of government in a degrading society that seeks simple solutions to complex issues.

Ukrainian and russian officials met in Istanbul today to negotiate an end to the war – though each side came out of those talks with different goals and agendas.

Vladimir Medinsky, who headed up the russian delegation, said he was "satisfied" with the outcome of today's negotiations, said the two countries agreed on three points, which were:
- The exchange of prisoners of war
- That russia has "taken notice" of Ukraine's request for direct talks to take place between putin and Zelensky
- And that russia and Ukraine will present a vision of a "possible future ceasefire"
"Once this vision has been presented, we believe it would be appropriate, as also agreed to continue our negotiations," the statement continued.

Ukrainian defence minister Rustem Umerov who tells the press that his delegation's first priority was "people". Ukraine and russia have agreed to swap 1,000 prisoners of war each after the first face-to-face talks in three years. The date for the transfer has been set, but is not being made public, Ukraine's defence minister says.
https://www.bbc.com/news/live/c74nxrr7mwkt

Donald Tusk, the head of the Polish government, told journalists that the talks showed that the russians had not shown good will in Istanbul. The russian side did not intend to negotiate in the presence of the American side. The russian side set conditions that were unacceptable not only to Ukraine, but to all of us.

Tusk emphasized that politicians would continue to work on peace in Ukraine. He added that the main task would be to maintain European and American unity in this matter. We do not hide the fact that the russian position can hardly be called constructive in any way. We are probably still facing very difficult days - Donald Tusk published an entry regarding the conversation with Trump.
https://www.rmf24.pl/fakty/swiat/news-tusk-po-rozmowach-z-trumpem-czas-zwiekszyc-presje,nId,7967056

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal stated that Ukraine is recording all crimes committed by russia regarding the forced mobilization of Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. In particular, several hundred thousand war crimes have been registered to date, including the facts of forced mobilization. According to the Prime Minister, all this is recorded by law enforcement officers and transferred to the International Criminal Court. https://sud.ua/uk/news/ukraine/331166-dannye-o-prinuditelnoy-mobilizatsii-ukraintsev-na-tot-ukraina-peredaet-v-mus-shmygal

I wonder if they have reported to the International Criminal Court about how Ukraine itself is forcibly mobilizing Ukrainians?

Another hard week has ended. Well, how it ended. There's still something to do over the weekend. The head of one department complained that she had another person fired. She couldn't handle the workload. I also have more work than people. I have to be careful, I can't afford too much workload. The fact that I'm not recovering by Monday is a bad sign. And given the situation in the country, it's better not to leave the home at all...
