Another hard week has ended. Well, how it ended. There's still something to do over the weekend. The head of one department complained that she had another person fired. She couldn't handle the workload. I also have more work than people. I have to be careful, I can't afford too much workload. The fact that I'm not recovering by Monday is a bad sign. And given the situation in the country, it's better not to leave the home at all...
Yes, please avoid unnecessary risks and take good care of yourself. I hope you (and the country) have easier times soon.

Thank you Bob!

I have long been a fatalist and have relied on God's will. If He has led me through all that I have already had to go through, I have no doubt that I can continue to rely on Him.
As for the load, it is more difficult with this, but I hope that this phase will pass and it will be a little easier.

There is an advantage to being tired - despite the fact that there was a drone attack on Kyiv all night, I slept. I think I heard something, but I didn't wake up from the explosions. Sergiy UT3UFD, on the contrary, was furious that he couldn't sleep. There were no hits in our area, but there were again deaths and damage in other areas. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cgj859wzp82o

The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reports that in order to demonstratively pressure and intimidate Ukraine, as well as the EU and NATO member states, the aggressor state russia intends to carry out a “training and combat” launch of the RS-24 intercontinental ballistic missile from the Yars complex https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RS-24_Yars on the night of May 19, 2025. The flight range of the specified three-stage solid-fuel missile is over 10 thousand kilometers” and even without a warhead it can cause great damage if it hits a residential building.
https://armyinform.com.ua/2025/05/18/vorog-planuye-navchalno-bojovyj-zapusk-mizhkontynentalnoyi-balistychnoyi-rakety-gur/

So today I decided to take a full rest. In the morning Sergiy came to my place and we had coffee. After the dinner given the bad propagation, Colin G3ZAF and I talked for over an hour on Zoom.

We talked again about how incomplete information affects the perception of the situation. In general, this distortion of reality is very dangerous. And it is not only about underestimating the enemy, but also about overestimating oneself. In the imagination of Ukrainians and not only the Ukrainian army is huge and invincible, but in reality no one knows what part of it currently consists of unmotivated forcibly mobilized people, and we must not forget that they are poorly trained and fight for other people's money under extremely poor management. And the only thing that saves the situation is that the russians are not doing much better.

Also all of Colin's acquaintances in Ukraine mention the manhunt in one way or another, although he hears nothing about it on the BBC. This is obviously an uncomfortable topic that the politically correct Western media diligently avoids. Of course, Western leaders would not be so comfortable publicly supporting Zelensky if their people knew what the authorities in Ukraine were doing.

In Kharkiv on May 12, a man died after falling from the third-floor window of a mobilization center building. They say he committed suicide, but people point out that he chose a strange place for this and had not been seen with suicidal intentions before. https://sud.ua/uk/news/ukraine/331333-v-kharkovskom-ttsk-utverzhdayut-chto-ne-ubivali-muzhchinu-a-on-sam-vypal-iz-okna

I am sure that the investigation will be formal. On the other hand, it is difficult to blame the workers of the mobilization centers and the police for what they do. If they do not send others to their deaths, then they will have to go to the front themselves.

Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko appealed to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine with a call to replace the military uniform for workers of mobilization centers with another.

According to the MP, the military personnel of the mobilization centers are allegedly dishonoring the military uniform with their actions (as is known, the competence includes, in particular, the mobilization of citizens of Ukraine into the army).

“For the past year, military personnel have been actively contacting me and asking me to do something about the fact that they are constantly confused with workers of mobilization centers because of their uniforms. The military have become ashamed to wear a pixel (slang name for military uniform in Ukraine). Sidelong glances, people run in different directions just to get past you, and in extreme cases it even comes to a fight,” the people's deputy noted. https://redaktor.com.ua/2025/05/17/ideya-nardepa-goncharenka-shhodo-inshoyi-formy-dlya-vijskovyh-tczk-rozizlyla-rechnyka-zsu/

Starting in 2025, boys aged 17 and over who plan to enter higher or vocational education institutions will be required to provide a military registration document. https://sud.ua/uk/news/ukraine/331254-postuplenie-v-vuzy-dlya-parney-tolko-s-voenno-uchetnym-dokumentom-novye-pravila-s-2025-goda
It is obvious that now even more boys will go abroad to receive higher education.

I can't vouch for the accuracy of the numbers, although looking out the window or inside a large supermarket, it seems like that's the case somewhere. Since gaining independence, Ukraine has been experiencing a steady decline in the birth rate. While in 1990-1991, 657.2 thousand and 630.8 thousand children were born, respectively, in 2024 there were only 176.1 thousand (data only from controlled territories). This means a decrease in the birth rate by more than 70%. In 2024, mortality in Ukraine exceeded the birth rate by almost three times. During the year, 495.1 thousand people died, while only 176.1 thousand were born. https://www.slovoidilo.ua/2025/05/13/infografika/suspilstvo/skilky-lyudej-narodzhuyetsya-pomyraye-ukrayini

US President Donald Trump has posted on Truth Social following his two hour call with russian President Vladimir rutin. He says believes the call went "very well", adding that "russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a ceasefire and, more importantly bring and end to the war".

Some more from putin, who has been speaking following his call with Trump. "Contacts between participants in the Istanbul talks have resumed, which gives reason to believe that on the whole we're on the right track," putin adds.
https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cz9y5xy81jqt

Well, we don't know what they actually talked about for two hours, but everything related to Ukraine remained unchanged. Just a little suspicious that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asks Trump not to make decisions about Ukraine "without us"...

Here is the latest Washington Post reporting on the Trump/Putin call and peace negotiations.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/05/20/trump-putin-call-ukraine-europe

According to this Trump did not do anything concrete about Russian stalling. I hope this is very temporary or that the WaPo doesn’t have the full picture, and that he will soon do more.

However, as I said earlier here, I have feared that Trump could lose interest in resolving the war, or actively take Russias side even more than he has. Recall that Trump has drastically reoriented US foreign policy toward Russia - supposed arctic business deals, some kind of detente and mutually beneficial relationship with Russia in the arctic and elsewhere, etc., and of course his longstanding personal interest in real estate in Russia, particularly a grand hotel.

The strict regime became necessary due to my health and I woke up at the same time as usual, although I decided not to go to the office today. I need to recover from a difficult period and yesterday I held all the meetings that required my presence. Tomorrow morning will start again with a general meeting, and today I will be able to work on documents from home. It has finally become warm and the sun is shining. I will have to go out to buy vegetables at the farmers' market.
This morning I saw another air raid alert on my phone screen, but I heard nothing again.

After a large-scale blackout that recently occurred in Spain, mobile communication and the Internet disappeared there yesterday. https://www.lbc.co.uk/world-news/all-major-mobile-networks-emergency-service-lines-down-spain/ The authorities say that this is due to an unsuccessful attempt to update the software, but I do not believe it. Perhaps the weak position of Europe in relations with Russia is connected with such cases?

The Polish Prime Minister's statement on refusing to send a military contingent to Ukraine is understandable because his party's candidate made it to the second round of the presidential election, but without an advantage over his competitor. Therefore, there is an obvious reluctance to take risks and lose votes due to unpopular statements. https://www.tvp.info/86811985/donald-tusk-w-pytaniu-dnia-tvp-info-20-maja-2025-trzaskowski-nie-bedzie-prezydentem-wojny-domowej-wideo

Another Polish presidential candidate, Karol Nawrocki, who advanced to the second round of the election, is ready to promise to abandon support for Ukraine's accession to NATO in exchange for political support for the third most popular presidential candidate, the leader of the "Confederation" Slawomir Menzen, who is known for his anti-Ukrainian position. https://www.rbc.ua/rus/news/ukrayina-rozminna-moneta-navrotskiy-postupivsya-1747750567.html

Last year, Donald Trump promised he would end the Ukraine War in "24 hours". Last week, he said that it would not be resolved until he and russian President Vladimir putin could "get together" and hash it out in person. On Monday, the ground shifted again. After a two-hour phone call with Putin, he said that the conditions of a peace deal could only be negotiated between russia and Ukraine – and maybe with the help of the Pope. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4ge7jq0px2o

The US president had the means to pressure putin on Ukraine and didn’t. The US president didn’t fail to end this war, because he never tried.

His focus was from day one to achieve a reset with russia that would deliver an economic bounty to the US. American participation in the war was an obstacle to be removed before that could happen, and doing so via a peace settlement — rather than Ukraine’s abandonment — was a better look. It wasn’t, however, essential.

“This was a European situation, and should have remained a European situation,” Trump said on Monday. https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2025-05-20/trump-surrendered-now-europe-has-a-choice-to-make-on-ukraine

The deeper question now is whether he is also abandoning America’s three-year-long project to support Ukraine, a nascent democracy that he has frequently blamed for being illegally invaded.
The news release from the British government announcing the new sanctions made no mention of the United States, but instead stated that the European Union was preparing to “announce its 17th package of sanctions against russia, in a coordinated effort to secure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

A senior European official who has been involved in the closed-door discussions said Mr. Trump never seemed invested in joining sanctions on russia if it refused to go along with the unconditional cease-fire. His threats, the official said, appeared largely performative; the United States did not join in the design of major new sanctions.

Wlad, Its good that warmer weather has arrived and I hope it will help in your recovery and general mood with all the stress.

I don’t have the “gene” to immediately believe in hidden actors and conspiracies, but I agree that these European power interruptions do seem suspicious. Electric infrastructure is a prime cyberattack target, Russia is good at it, and it’s very low risk for them.

It seems that the Poles are not immune to the resentful selfishness and attendant cruelty of populist politics, though generally they have up to now been very supportive of Ukraine. It’s been a worldwide phenomenon in recent years. I think that the modern culture of instant gratification and the nature of social media encourages impatience and grasping for possessions, contributing to a short time limit on public support for aid to others in bad situations. (Not to mention easily targeted propaganda on social media).

I agree that Trump’s efforts to end the Russian war on Ukraine were low level at best, and at worst a cynical cover for his true intention of forming friendly relations with Russia and helping his buddy Putin. Russian propaganda has often been repeated by him, his Secretary of State, and his negotiators. As we say here, “the fix was in”.

Will Europe alone will be able to force Putin to stop advancing and sign a peace deal? I hope so but I don’t see how. Regardless of outside aid and power, it’s clear that the path forward is dark without substantial reforms to governance within Ukraine as you’ve pointed out.

If we divide what the USA, Europe and Ukraine did, realizing that their interests do not always and not in everything coincide, then it will become clear why and how their relations with each other also changed over time.
I do not know what the situation looks like from the side of the USA or Europe, but it seems to me that Ukraine used the previously provided assistance very ineptly. This is reminiscent of when an infantile person suddenly receives an inheritance from a distant relative. Money is spent irrationally and there is no strategy not only for development, but also for the existence of the country in general for a period of more than a year in accordance with the weapons and money promised by the sponsors.
Rampant corruption and incompetence of the authorities have made Ukraine totally dependent on Western supplies of weapons and money. The policy of minimizing the threat and shifting the burden of war to the poor part of the population, the lack of rotations in the army, led to a feeling of injustice and demotivation of Ukrainians. All this together led to the rapid exhaustion of the country and the corresponding disappointment in its partners. Add to this the loss of interest in the war and Trump's demands that Europe solve this problem on its own, and it turns out that Ukraine is left alone sooner than it expected. Although it seems like two years ago I asked how you can count on endless support?

Six servicemen were killed and more than 10 were injured in a russian missile strike on Sumy Oblast on May 20, the National Guard of Ukraine said. It said the strike occurred during training at a military unit's shooting range. Many are asking how right it is to build training ranges so close to the front line, within reach of enemy drones and missiles. Especially since this is not the first such case. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cgj88040q36o

The commander of the 1st mechanized battalion of the 47th separate mechanized brigade "Magura" of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Shirshin, announced his resignation and accused his superiors of "moronic tasks." On the evening of May 16, a post appeared on the battalion commander's Facebook page, where he expressed dissatisfaction with orders from the military leadership and announced that he was submitting a report for dismissal from his position.

"I have not received more moronic tasks than in the current direction. I will tell you the details sometime, but the loss of people was dull, trembling before the clueless generals does not lead to anything except failures. All that is capable of is reprimands, investigations, imposition of penalties," Shirshin's post said. "'Political' games and assessment of the real state of affairs do not correspond to either reality or possibilities. They have been played out."

The officer's criticism caused a resonance. Someone sided with the battalion commander, someone accused him of "hysteria."
https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c14kxv2xmero

This officer has an impeccable reputation, but he seems to not understand the political component and the real goals of the high military command.

The European Union will make 5.5 million euros available to the non-governmental organisation European Endowment for Democracy (EED) to support Prague-based Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), EU diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas told journalists on Tuesday.

Czechia has actively sought to support the funding of the radio station. The station has been struggling financially after President Donald Trump's administration withdrew money previously allocated to it by the US Congress. https://english.radio.cz/eu-pledges-55-million-euros-support-czech-based-radio-free-europe-8851657

Police have completed an investigation into the death of a man at a mobilization center who either fell or was thrown from a third-floor window. According to the regional police chief, the injuries were consistent with a fall from a height, and video footage does not confirm incitement to suicide. It turned out he was the cyclist who was previously hit by a car during a detention by mobilization center workers. https://informator.ua/uk/policiya-zavershila-perevirku-u-spravi-velosipedista-yakiy-zaginuv-u-tck-harkova-nihto-ne-vinen

Sumy region resident Vitaliy Kukol was sentenced for making explosives and mining a road to hinder the movement of russian occupiers. The Trostyanets District Court of Sumy region found Vitaliy Kukol guilty of committing a criminal offense under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Illegal Handling of Weapons, Ammunition and Explosives) and sentenced him to three years in prison. At the same time, the court decided to release the man from serving the sentence with a probationary period of one year.

At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the man personally made explosives and mined the road between Trostyanets and Kamyanka, which were occupied at the time. He helped evacuate people from the occupation and cooperated with the 93rd Kholodny Yar Brigade.
At one of the court hearings, he said that he made the weapon at the beginning of a full-scale war so that he would have something to defend his village in the event of an invasion by russian troops. He does not see his guilt in this. https://hromadske.radio/news/2025/05/19/cholovik-vyhotovyv-vybukhivku-shchob-zaminuvaty-dorohu-okupantam-na-sumshchyni-teper-yo-zasudyly

Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a former Ukrainian politician on Wednesday morning outside a school in a wealthy suburb of Madrid, Spain's Interior Ministry said. "Several persons shot him in the back and the head and then fled towards a forested area," an Interior Ministry source said.
The victim, Andriy Portnov, 51, was a senior aide to Ukraine's pro-russian former President Viktor Yanukovich who was ousted in a 2014 popular uprising.
Portnov left for russia the same year and has faced investigations in Ukraine over accusations of treason and embezzlement, as well as international sanctions, although the charges and EU sanctions were later dropped.

I think you did too, and you have raised the point several more times here. And you are correct.

Here the initial deep support here for Ukraine has significantly diminished in my opinion. The war has gone on too long, is far away and our soldiers aren’t involved, so it’s not a large issue in the minds of most people as are many other conflicts around the world.

The effect of right wing media including Fox News is substantial, and they have promoted many Russian narratives. There is a substantial minority of people who get their news only from them and from social media that shows them only similar views based on algorithms. In a number of places they seem to be the majority and their government representatives reflect their views.

However the biggest reason for reduced support for Ukraine is President Trump.

There's no doubt that support for Ukraine has diminished, but there are many reasons for it in my opinion:

1. Ukraine is not the "new" topic, and the "what's hot today?" culture of the US and its news complex doesn't stay with old causes, once a new cause arises. New causes have included the Israeli situation as well as domestic policy controversies which are numerous - tariffs as one example.
2. Ukraine's government has provided a lot of ammunition for naysayers by suspending elections, free expression, sullying their democratic reputation, embezzling resources, and being generally inflexible around the conditions for peace (as has Russia, but we expected nothing better from Russia while we did expect better from Ukraine).
3. Budgetary problems in the US, including that it's finally dawning on people that the US can't keep spending $2 trillion+ per year more than it gets in taxes.
4. As Bob mentioned, Ukraine being geographically distant, and Europe not seeming to be in any real panic about Russia themselves.
5. Yes, Trump's priorities - as well as the priorities of those who voted for him, are different. More domestically focused and less interested in managing other countries internal affairs/conflicts directly.

Wlad, I hope you pace yourself and don't "overdo it" in terms of your workload - tempting as that may be! God will see you through.

Guys, thank you for your opinion. You are right. Everyone is in their own bubble and not only do not know, but also do not want to know about other opinions.
It seems to me that one of the biggest problems of Ukraine is the lack of a clear answer to the question of "how" it is going to achieve its goals. If for Europe the agreement "we give money - you fight" may continue to operate, and its goal is to maintain hostilities on the territory of Ukraine and fight Russia with the hands of Ukrainians, then for a certain part of Ukrainians everything is not so clear. On the one hand, the ability of the authorities to organize defense and find resources for it abroad is an indisputable fact. On the other hand, this was done at the expense of part of the population, who were actually turned into slaves, and enormous damage to the economy. We will find out later what damage was caused to the country by such a policy, provided, of course, that even in the medium term it does not lead to the loss of the entire country or a large part of it.
The likelihood that Trump will change his mind is extremely small, and US support has been critical.
Regarding money, not everything is clear either. Although it is a loan, there should be enough money for 2025, but no one is promising to give Ukraine money next year. Moreover, Europe has focused on developing its own defense industry.

Next Tuesday, May 27, 2025, EU member states will formally approve a new defense initiative – the creation of a €150 billion ($169 billion) Security Action for Europe (SAFE) fund.

With this money, EU authorities promise to stimulate the defense industry and start a new era of rearmament in Europe. However, critics doubt the European Commission’s ability to distribute the funds transparently and fairly and to ensure proper supervision of investments.

Poland, which has an A credit rating, plans to take €30.6 billion from the €150 billion SAFE fund to invest in its production of Piorun portable anti-aircraft missile systems, Krab self-propelled howitzers and Borsuk infantry fighting vehicles. This was announced on Tuesday, May 20, by Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosyniak-Kamysz. https://mind.ua/publications/20289672-es-stvoryue-spilnij-z-ukrayinoyu-oboronnij-fond-na-150-mlrd-evro-yakim-vin-bude

Polish President Andrzej Duda has called on NATO member states to invite Ukraine to join the alliance without delay. https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2025/01/15/7493735/
These words are unlikely to be worth anything considering that Duda is completing his term, and the decision to admit another country to NATO depends not only on Poland.

The Royal United Services Institute believes that russia will seek to intensify offensive operations to build pressure during negotiations, but the pressure cannot be sustained indefinitely. There is a darker possible future, in which the summer offensive overpowers Ukrainian defences to take key towns in Donbas, after which russia pivots to attacking Kharkiv in the autumn, while once again switching its deep strike campaign to degrade Ukrainian power generation and distribution ahead of the winter. The russians understand that these have an impact on the civilian population in Ukraine and the international community. Under such circumstances, the russians hope that they can steadily convince Europe to pressure Ukraine to sue for peace, even on unacceptable terms. It is the belief that this trajectory is possible that is keeping the Kremlin prepared to plough on, despite the chronic underperformance of its arms. https://www.rusi.org/explore-our-research/publications/commentary/ukraine-prepares-russian-summer-offensive

I completely agree, Brady.

I’d add that even in the best circumstances and with the best leadership, it’s still difficult to get many Americans to learn about and think about the consequences of affairs half a world away. Our large domestic economy and relative geographic isolation has historically made foreign countries and issues nearly irrelevant to many of us.

It was a difficult night in Ukraine — 250 strike drones and 14 ballistic missiles hit civilians in Odesa, Vinnytsia, Sumy, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Kyiv, and Dnipro.

First, for several hours, Kyiv was attacked by drones, and then, after 1 a.m., russia struck with at least two ballistic missiles. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c071pzp4jmpo
The attack lasted until the morning, and the fragments of the drones caused damage and fires throughout the city. There were also injuries. There is no exact information about the missile hits, as always, we will find out later.

Although drone and missile attacks occur almost daily.
https://bigkyiv.com.ua/u-kyyevi-ulamky-zbytogo-drona-vpaly-na-terytoriyu-shkoly/
https://armyinform.com.ua/2025/05/23/shahedy-atakuvaly-poltavshhynu-znyshheno-budivlyu-pidpryyemstva-bez-svitla-majzhe-2000-spozhyvachiv/

Unfortunately, so far nothing has been heard about similar attacks on Moscow, although Ukraine is not limited by sanctions and has free access to any Western technology to create similar drones.
Instead, the only noticeable strategy of the Ukrainian authorities in the war is to catch and send as many people as possible to the front. It seems that the number of those who agreed is rapidly decreasing. And this is evidenced not only by the number of those who flee at all stages on the way to the front, but also by cases when men resist those who try to forcibly mobilize them.

In various parts of the country, mobilizers began to be beaten, although some of them had previously served at the front.

In Kharkiv, a serviceman who had previously been mobilized into the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine opened fire on teenagers who allegedly called him a "mobilizer." The incident occurred in March of this year. https://24tv.ua/viyskoviy-strilyav-po-pidlitkah-harkovi-vin-obrazivsya-shho-yogo_n2829062

This is very sad, although expected. Will the authorities change their attitude towards mobilization and people? What is the real goal of inciting opposition in society and discrediting the army? How does this help russia? I don't have good answers to these questions.

Ukrainian media outlet Ukrainska Pravda published an article stating that Andriy Portnov, a shadowy curator of the courts and a lawyer close to fugitive ex-president Yanukovych, was in Ukraine a few days before his assassination in Madrid and met with top officials responsible for the work of law enforcement agencies. https://www.pravda.com.ua/news/2025/05/23/7513767/

If this is true, then even more uncomfortable questions arise - how can such people freely travel to and from Ukraine, what does the current government have in common with them?

russia has intensified strikes on Ukraine, with the highest number of drones and missiles launched in a single night yet. At least 14 people, including three children, were killed and dozens injured, Ukrainian officials said. The attack was the second large-scale assault on the country in 48 hours, coming a day after the Ukrainian capital Kyiv suffered one of the heaviest assaults since the start of the russian invasion. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx2rx8kxdm4o

They didn't let me sleep again, but at least I recorded some good audio for Cicely again. The background for the gunshots and explosions was the light sound of rain.

Head of the Communications Department of the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yuriy Ignat reported that after a long break, the russians again used the Kh-22 missile to strike Ukraine. The mass of its warhead is 950 kg and the missile has an acceptable inaccuracy in the radius of destruction of 600 m. Unfortunately, the ballistics flew over different regions today and it was not possible to intercept it today, - Ignat emphasized. He also noted that the russians launched a record number of "Shaheeds" and simulator drones over Ukraine, of which there were 298 in total. This suggests that the enemy is increasing the production of UAVs. https://www.unian.ua/war/nichna-ataka-rf-pislya-pauzi-vdarila-raketoyu-h-22-balistiku-mi-ne-zbili-13018836.html?utm_source=ukrnet_news

This is bad news and a possible change in tactics. If they do this for several days in a row, it could exhaust the Ukrainian air defense.

On Monday, May 26, the Netherlands will officially complete the transfer of the promised 24 F-16 fighters to Ukraine, said Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans. https://www.pravda.com.ua/news/2025/05/25/7513970/

The official loss of three such aircraft was reported, but given the intensity of their use, this is a good figure.

Despite its declared readiness for peace, russia continues active hostilities along the entire front line. The russian Federation has planned a new major offensive for June. Three more regions of Ukraine will be under its sights, which the aggressor will try to seize in order to increase its "appetite" in the upcoming peace "bargainings," writes Bild https://today.ua/479192-u-chervni-rf-planuye-novij-velikij-nastup-agresor-pragne-zahopiti-she-tri-oblasti-ukrayini-bild/

The potential of the russian army at the front has begun to weaken, so the summer offensive is probably the last way for the russians to break through the defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Washington Post believes that next year the occupiers may face a serious shortage of manpower and weapons. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/05/24/trump-putin-battlefield-ceasefire-ukraine/

I think I heard the same thing last year, only Ukraine now has much less support from the West, and russia is constantly improving its army. We still don't know the true price Ukraine is paying for holding the front line, but I haven't heard of any soldiers returning from the front who weren't disabled or in a coffin.

The upsurge in attacks is creating a situation where if Trump really wants to end this war, he's going to have to up the ante for Putin. Or, he's just going to have to accept letting things progress until one or both sides give up, and be called a Loser or a Quitter by his detractors - the latter of which he hates more than anything.
If he decides to up the ante, he won't do it in the same orthodox way that Biden did, sending money to be embezzled by the Ukraine authorities. He will do something unexpected... I'm not sure what, of course.
