Bob, Yes I agree with you that he is a Ukrainian patriot - he made that fairly evident. I thought the youtuber had an actual connection between these people leaving for Russia, and the NYT reports, but I guess that was a bad assumption. (In my view the NYT should at least acknowledge that their reporter was restricted from filing anything putting the Russians in a bad light. I don't pay for their paywall anymore, so I wonder if they did that? If they really are a newspaper "of record," then it's essential that the "record" be accurate).
Since the Russia-Ukraine war is so clear-cut as to who the aggressor is, I think it would be OK for the NYT to (at minimum) not let anything through the editorial process that portrays the Russians in a positive light (although they should not lie to accomplish that, of course).
I don't really know why any American family would move to Russia - a very sad decision indeed, as it's obvious that the husband/father will only return in a body bag.
As I've said many times in the past, I refuse to contribute to this forum becoming a discussion of American political opinions and/or politicians, which is why I haven't responded to insulting remarks about Trump, just as I was very careful to not insult Biden when he was in office - balancing the things he did that were good, with any criticisms, and of course, either only when they were related to Ukraine. I will continue to hew to that policy - it's nothing personal, I just think it's best, here, to focus on Ukraine and, when remarking on the USA, only on specific policies that affect Ukraine. Take care my friend.

Hi Brady, here is a gift link to the NYT article in question and should open for you without a paywall. Let me know if you have a problem reading it. I did not find it to be positive about the Russians.

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/12/world/europe/ukraine-russia-kursk.html?unlocked_article_code=1.XU8.2fs7.ST3oc_o-MrR3&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

(Incidentally I only pay $4 or so per month for the NYT for a year. Every time the low rate subscription is about to reset to full price, I decline it. Either they offer the cheap rate immediately or after a week or two. It’s been working for years. Most subscriptions can be negotiated. The only one I couldn’t was the WSJ, after doing it once successfully. The WSJ reporting is excellent but over $400 a year is far too steep.)

I agree it’s puzzling, and tragic, that some people have decided to move to Russia. This happened occasionally even during Soviet times. The attraction back then was living in an imagined communist utopia. In whatever era there always seem to be those who are disgruntled enough with their lot in life that they turn to some idealized but false hope elsewhere.

People are usually driven to other countries by war, disappointment in their own countries, or criminal prosecution. But we understand that if a person has not been fulfilled in their own country, then most likely they will not do so in another, where they face additional difficulties, such as a different language and culture. Therefore, to understand how and why a person from the USA went to russia, it is necessary to carefully study their specific circumstances. Of course, it is interesting to hear the results directly from this person, but do not draw conclusions from some excerpts of publications that can be twisted and distorted for a certain purpose.

Bob, thank you for the opportunity to read the original article, I found it quite neutral. Although we understand that neither objectivity nor neutrality is acceptable under the circumstances. Moreover, you can be accused of a lack of patriotism. But if we are unable to remain objective, then everything we say will be perceived as biased. But in my opinion, it is necessary to show the facts from which a reasonable person will draw conclusions. For example, the article says that the destruction in the Kursk region was caused, among other things, by russian bombing. The journalist writes that she saw the corpses, but it is not known who exactly killed them and how. She also cited testimonies from local residents who said they were not subjected to harassment or violence by Ukrainian soldiers. But it seems obvious to me that it is not necessary to write separately that all the destruction and death are a direct consequences of russia's attack on Ukraine. If someone is unable to understand this, then no article will convince him of this.

Today I woke up at five in the morning with a severe headache and found out that I have very high blood pressure. I took medication and decided to stay home. It's good that most meetings are held remotely. Stress and the weather have finished me again. And this is despite the fact that there have been no drones or missiles in Kyiv for the last few days. People joke that this is because of the best air defense - US President Donald Trump's special representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, who was in Ukraine for several days. https://nv.ua/ukr/world/geopolitics/kit-kellog-specpredstavnik-trampa-pokinuv-ukrajinu-50530523.html

He may have been discussing the implementation of Trump's plan. The US State Department reported that President Donald Trump is determined to implement his vision of ending the war in Ukraine. He plans to act aggressively. https://www.state.gov/briefings/department-press-briefing-july-16-2025/?utm_source=homepage&utm_medium=news_bar&utm_campaign=dpb

Meanwhile, air battles continue. There are especially many hits in the Dnipro. https://www.dw.com/uk/dronova-ataka-rosii-na-dnipro-e-zagiblij-ta-poraneni/a-73305732

On the night of Friday, July 18, drones massively also attacked russian territory, in particular the Moscow region and Moscow. The russian Defense Ministry reported the shooting down of 73 UAVs, but residents of russian regions heard a series of explosions and landings.
https://zaxid.net/news/

The government in Ukraine has changed. It has become the smallest in the history of Ukraine - only 16 ministers, but there are no new faces in it, which indicates that the government has no reserve bench. This also means that neither new ideas nor changes in course should be expected. The former prime minister has headed the Ministry of Defense, which is a demotion, but through which almost half of all budget money now passes. The previous Minister of Defense, who was rumored to become the new ambassador to the United States, was not approved there and became the new Secretary of the National Security Council of Ukraine. Rumors also say that he turned the Ministry of Defense into the Ministry of Chaos, which the former prime minister, who set a record for the length of time he was in the chair of the head of government, and was remembered, by and large, only for the fact of this record, must correct. The personnel composition of Yulia Svyrydenko's cabinet does not allow us to determine what idea is behind the urgent, sometimes chaotic, and perhaps not entirely within the framework of the law on martial law, change of government.

One of the first questions to the newly appointed Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, was about "busification." He acknowledged that there are cases of violations of people's rights during the service of summonses, but mobilization is proceeding according to plan. https://www.dsnews.ua/ukr/politics/novopriznacheniy-ochilnik-minoboroni-shmigal-pro-busifikaciyu-chuyemo-pro-pevni-vipadki-18072025-525487

On Thursday, July 17, during Zelensky's speech in parliament, he answered a question from the People's Deputy from the "European Solidarity" Oleksiy Honcharenko regarding terms of service and demobilization. "Our military will return home when we defeat the enemy", the president said.
Honcharenko said that he had a "tough" conflict with the president on the topic of demobilization. "Zelensky is categorically against it. He believes that everyone should fight to the end and return only when we win. I think differently. There should be clear terms of service and then the person must decide for himself whether to continue or not," the people's deputy wrote.
https://24tv.ua/koli-v-ukrayini-bude-demobilizatsiya-zelenskiy-poyasniv-termini-sluzh_n2872309

The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine has granted several media and entertainment companies the status of critical for the functioning of the economy and ensuring the livelihoods of the population during a special period, which gives grounds to reserve their employees from military service and allow them to travel abroad.

Earlier, the Ministry of Culture confirmed the status of critical for several musical groups, and several dozen other enterprises and organizations, as well as more than 80 theaters, operas, circuses, ensembles, chapels, orchestras, reserves, museums, libraries, reserves and specialized educational institutions.
https://interfax.com.ua/news/general/1088223.html

It turns out that engineers, doctors, and all other people who make a real contribution to the functioning of the economy and ensuring the livelihoods of the population are less important than comedians and artists, and should go to the front first.

In this case, should we be surprised when a mobilized person is beaten to death during conscription https://sud.ua/uk/news/publication/336265-mobilizovannogo-ot-kotorogo-otkazalis-voennye-chasti-predstavitel-ttsk-zabil-nasmert-pryamo-v-avtobuse-vo-vremya-postavki-mobilizatsionnykh-resursov-chto-reshil-sud or when a forcibly mobilized person shoots sergeants in a training camp? https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c0j4yj37w23o

Yes. Like vehicle accidents where the cause of the crash and which driver is at fault is usually clear from the objective facts of the skid marks on the pavement and the resting positions of the vehicles and debris, along with observations from an eyewitness or two.

“ It turns out that engineers, doctors, and all other people who make a real contribution to the functioning of the economy and ensuring the livelihoods of the population are less important than comedians and artists, and should go to the front first.”

The policies are stunningly, blindingly and incomprehensibly irrational and destructive. How they continue is a mystery. It seems to me that there would still be many opportunities for officials to collect bribes if the policies were rationalized, so corruption can’t be the only factor. After all, successful parasites are usually careful not to kill their hosts.

Today, Sergiy suggested we have coffee at his favorite cafe, but on the way we saw several police cars that stopped everyone in a row with an obvious purpose. One of them was in the immediate vicinity of the cafe and we decided not to tempt fate and went to another place. Unfortunately, the coffee there turned out to be cheap, but not tasty.

In general, the number of police cars is impressive. A little more and there will be as many of them as other cars. In recent years, you can often see cars that have not moved for a long time. They become dirty, their tires are flat, and then hooligans break the glass and the car dies. I wonder how many of their owners ended up in the army and will never return? And if they return, will they never see their cars? Probably, such trifles should not worry anyone in such difficult times for the country.

At least three people have died following another widespread air bombardment by russia. 10 regions of Ukraine, including a number of cities, were hit in the overnight assault. Ukraine's military said more than 340 explosive and dummy drones and 35 cruise and ballistic missiles were used. Kyiv was attacked by a few drones and it didn't bother me to sleep.

russia said it shot down more than 70 Ukrainian drones overnight into Saturday, most of them over the regions of Rostov, Moscow and Bryansk.
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cd0v8nkyx7jo

The war of mutual destruction continues and although Ukraine is holding on, it is difficult to say at what cost. Prices for everything are constantly rising, and mass layoffs are reported by one company after another. My friend said that the company where he worked fired 80 lawyers in one day along with him. But no one is in a hurry to go to work where they do not provide exemption from the army in one way or another.

Our company has lost major clients and people continue to quit due to low wages and increased workloads on those who remain. I agreed with the owner that I will continue to manage only one large project remotely. A big loss in money, but less risk and a workload that has become too much for my weak health. Especially since I need to start editing my next book, which I haven't had time for since I started working at this company a year ago. How imperceptibly another year flew by.

The Ukrainian authorities continue to demonstrate miracles of equilibrium at the expense of the money of Western partners and the lives of ordinary Ukrainians. Bloomberg writes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s cabinet overhaul this week was part of an effort to move into position presidential loyalists who can potentially win favor with Donald Trump.

The new prime minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, took office 11 weeks after her team at the Economy Ministry secured a deal with the US over access to Ukraine’s natural resources. That agreement, which gave Trump a win in an otherwise fruitless effort to end russia’s war on Ukraine, came together after weeks of grinding negotiations. Svyrydenko, who took the lead on the talks in the weeks after Zelensky was upbraided by Trump and his team in the Oval Office, rushed to Washington at the end of April to sign the deal. Svyrydenko managed to avoid risks in the resources deal and proved herself successful as a negotiator. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-19/zelenskiy-promotes-allies-who-ve-shown-they-can-deal-with-trump

This morning the House overwhelmingly voted to continue providing military support to Ukraine by a 353-76 vote, Republican Congressman Don Bacon said. https://x.com/repdonbacon/status/1946340622694064214?s=46&t=4wmqwhVOM9naZdo-cYGVgw

Thus, the US House of Representatives overwhelmingly supported the bill allocating $832 billion for defense programs in fiscal year 2026 and rejected the amendment that prohibited the use of funds for Ukraine.

That drive to get coffee was a close call. Good that you’re working remotely now.

From the massive layoffs it seems the economic decline is accelerating. I fail to see how any reasonable amount of outside financial aid will help substantially if there are few active businesses and most working age men are hiding in their homes from the conscription dragnets. Would the police go from house to house, break in, and search for men?
Perhaps women will save the economy. But then I recall there was a proposal to conscript women.

Fortunately the timing of the US military funding bill and Trump’s epiphany about Putin was favorable, dooming Rep. Greene’s isolationist anti-Ukraine amendment to a decisive defeat and stopping any momentum in that direction. It might have been a much closer vote otherwise.

On the new cabinet, Clearly it’s better to have it filled with lackeys who also impress Trump favorably in some way. It’s an existential necessity to play up to Trump in any way possible.

There has been talk for a long time that women will replace men, but it has never happened. Imagine if your neighbor, a financial analyst or a lawyer or an engineer or a doctor, was thrown on a bus tomorrow and taken to the army. Which woman would replace him? His wife? His neighbor? Who is this woman?

In Odessa, a doctor ended up in intensive care after he was pushed into a minibus and his head was crushed by the door. https://sud.ua/uk/news/ukraine/336451-v-odesse-vrach-popal-v-bolnitsu-posle-konflikta-s-sotrudnikami-ttsk-video

In Volyn, a man fought off those who wanted to grab him with a shovel, but he was later arrested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aLe_pKfGgY

People joke that having a shovel in your car is now better than having a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit. I wonder if the authorities would treat people this way if most people, like in the US, had firearms?

But the army itself also has plenty of original ideas. If in russia the state, in response to the shortage of drones, simply increased their production several times, then in Ukraine a system of receiving points for the successful use of drones was introduced. If you filmed the defeat of the enemy with a drone, you get points, which you can exchange for additional drones. Some call this the gamification of war. According to the First Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fedorov, this improves the motivation of soldiers. Although you can hear a different opinion from the soldiers, that their motivation would be improved more by a sufficient number of drones, rather than the need to compete for them. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c80p9k1r1dlo

My comment about women was mostly sarcastic and I should have added /s.

Obviously they would need to have the skills to replace a conscripted man in the same or similar job. It wouldn’t fix the issue anyway since in that case they are probably already working.  Or perhaps raising children or caring for parents, etc.

On the night of July 21, the russian military again carried out a massive air attack on Ukraine. Drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles were flying. The air alert in the regions began around midnight and lasted until the morning.

According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, during the night russia attacked Ukraine with 450 air attack vehicles. Among them were 426 drones, 5 Kinzhal missiles, 4 Calibre missiles, one Iskander-K missile and 14 Kh-101 cruise missiles. 200 drones and 24 missiles were destroyed, the Air Force says. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/crl0yk24rpjo

The drones attacked Kyiv and other regions of the country throughout the night. This time I heard many drones at the same time and noticed a difference - new drones appeared, which sound different and fly faster. And they also dive from a height. Judging by everything, the air defense does not even try to shoot down these new drones and you could hear how they explode when they hit somewhere after they flew overhead.

Ukraine also responded with a drone attack. A sustained Ukrainian drone attack on russia caused Moscow's major airports to be temporarily closed and saw at least 140 flights cancelled, officials said. More than 230 Ukrainian drones were downed over russia since Saturday morning - including 27 over the capital - according to the russian defence ministry. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cpvjewnrde0o

Ukraine also proposed to russia to resume direct negotiations. This was announced by Volodymyr Zelensky in his video address. Moscow received the invitation, sources report. Recently, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during a telephone conversation with putin, stated the importance of starting a third round of talks between russia and Ukraine. He assured that Turkey is ready to continue hosting meetings in Istanbul. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cglz733j6xpo

Meanwhile, in England they believe that russia’s targets are worldwide, but it is obvious that Britain is a priority given its leading role in supporting Ukraine. Indeed, some have suggested that the UK is the number one target behind Ukraine, even above the US, as Putin still hopes to lure Trump away from giving his full backing to Kyiv.

russian objectives include directly disrupting military aid to Ukraine as well as sowing division at home and inflicting greater costs on us through sabotage and cyber warfare. There have been repeated attacks in Britain and across Europe against infrastructure and transport hubs involved in shipping aid to Ukraine. A warehouse fire in London and an incendiary attack against a DHL hub in Birmingham are both likely to be the work of agents of the GRU, the russian military intelligence service. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/07/19/putins-spies-have-infiltrated-every-section-of-britain/

Anti-immigrant demonstrations were held in Poland, organized by the far-right Confederation party. They demanded the closure of the border with Ukraine and other countries. https://www.pap.pl/aktualnosci/konfederacja-chce-zamkniecia-granic-dla-nielegalnej-imigracji-srodowiska-lewicowe

On July 21, it became known that the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and the Prosecutor General's Office are conducting a "special operation to neutralize russian influence on the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU)." The SSU said that they had conducted a series of searches in different regions of the country. NABU detectives are "charged with high treason, illegal trade with russia, and corrupt actions in the interests of oligarchs." The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) also reported in the morning that the SSU came without official warning and received access to information about all covert and operational measures, as well as special operations conducted by the NABU and the SAPO.

One could only be glad that one special service is cleansing others of scoundrels at such a difficult time, but there are several suspicious circumstances that raise the question of whether this is pressure on the NABU and the SAPO, or is the investigation fair?

Firstly, the searches are taking place without a court order. Although this has happened quite often recently, it raises the question of whether a legitimate goal can be achieved by illegal means, especially by those whose primary task is to protect the law?

It is interesting that the heads of NABU and SAPO were on a business trip abroad today, reporting to Western partners about their activities.

It should be remembered that NABU and SAPO were established back in 2015 as independent and autonomous bodies outside the existing system of law enforcement agencies to combat corruption and other criminal offenses committed by senior officials and posing a threat to national security at the request of the EU and the IMF.

Some believe that the attack on NABU and SAPO is a reaction to the recent investigation into former Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov, who is considered close to the president and the head of his office, as well as other corrupt actions among the senior officials. A number of influential current and former SSU employees are also under investigation by NABU.

There is also an opinion that the authorities will try to completely eliminate such inconvenient bodies as NABU and SAPO, having previously discredited them. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cgmw01mkw2po

Ukraine’s new prime minister said she’s likely to seek more financing from the International Monetary Fund as she sets out to shore up the nation’s fiscal needs with no end in sight to russia’s war.
Yuliia Svyrydenko, a 39-year-old ally of President Volodymyr Zelensky who became Ukraine’s second female head of government last week, laid out the budget squeeze in stark terms. Global donors have so far earmarked only half of the estimated $75 billion that the war-strained budget requires over the next two years, she said.

In particular, with the IMF loan program worth about $16 billion set to expire in 2027, the uncertainty over the duration of the war is likely to lead to discussions of a new plan during the lender’s review next month, the premier said.

In the interview, Svyrydenko sought to play down the issue of corruption, citing polls showing that while a large majority believe graft is widespread, far fewer have encountered such activity.

“To be frank, within Ukrainian society and certain social groups, the issue is being amplified and overemphasized,” the premier said. Outside observers, on the other hand, “assess Ukraine based on different metrics,” she said.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-22/ukraine-s-new-premier-is-preparing-to-seek-a-fresh-imf-program

Well, okay. Maybe she personally didn't take bribes, or maybe she just wasn't given any. Or maybe she just says what she has to say.

But this is too painful a topic for the people, which can be used and is already being used to attack the authorities. In Kyiv, on July 22, citizens gathered for a protest after the adoption of a bill that effectively eliminates the independence of the anti-corruption bodies NABU and SAPO. https://hromadske.ua/kyyiv/248465-u-kyyevi-liudy-zibralys-na-aktsiiu-proty-zakonoproyektu-shchodo-nabu-ta-sap

The Verkhovna Rada hastily passed a law that effectively transferred control over anti-corruption bodies into the hands of the Prosecutor General, who, as Volodymyr Zelensky himself once admitted, is "100% his man." Although in the spring of 2019, then-presidential candidate Volodymyr Zelensky promised "maximum state support for the newly created anti-corruption bodies and the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court to effectively fulfill their tasks."

Some suggest that the trigger was the recent indictment of the minister, and suspicions could soon be cast on the next people close to the president.
https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/c4gk1nqp7w9o

In the evening, the parliament's website became inaccessible for viewing the details of the bill due to "technical work."
https://24tv.ua/ne-mozhna-glyanuti-ye-pidpis-zelenskogo-sayt-radi-lig-roboti_n2876385

The European Commission believes that the decision of the Ukrainian people's deputies to adopt a law on reducing the powers of the NABU and the SAPO is a serious step backwards, citing European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos. She recalled that independent bodies such as the NABU and the SAPO are important for Ukraine's path to the EU. https://x.com/MartaKosEU/status/1947663547233710152

Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, together with the head of the SSU, Vasyl Malyuk, and the director of the State Bureau of Investigation, Oleksiy Sukhachev, were forced to provide explanations to the G7 representatives. https://sud.ua/uk/news/publication/336682-ruslan-kravchenko-i-vasiliy-malyuk-vo-vremya-vstrechi-s-predstavitelyami-stran-g7-obsudili-sobytiya-vokrug-nabu

The Director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, Semen Kryvonos, and the Head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, Oleksandr Klymenko, announced on July 22 that they too may become subjects of criminal proceedings. According to Oleksandr Klymenko, the NABU and SAPO have already appealed to the embassies of the EU, the US, and the IMF with a request to respond to the situation surrounding the anti-corruption bodies. https://sud.ua/uk/news/publication/336677-mi-mozhemo-stati-nastupnimi-za-nami-tezh-mozhut-priyti-kerivniki-nabu-ta-sap-zvernulisya-do-yes-ssha-ta-mvf-po-dopomogu

Well, this is getting interesting. On the one hand, for Ukrainian business, all these law enforcement agencies and how and what they did looked about the same, but it turned out that they are not ready, that they will be treated in the same way as they recently did with others. On the other hand, perhaps they were truly independent of the government and got too close to it, which makes them a necessary evil.

It is interesting what the reaction of the president, who can veto this law, will be, provided that he himself is not involved in criminal cases that pose a threat to top corrupt officials.

All this constantly reminds me of President Yanukovych's regime, which ended with the Maidan and his flight to russia.

Today I visited the IV Business & Legal Infrastructure Forum. I wouldn't say that this topic was very interesting to me, but the organizers offered free participation and it was held not far from the office. There were few people and the speakers stated the facts that there are very few infrastructure projects as a part and basis of the global recovery of Ukraine. If the energy sector is being restored at the expense of money from foreign donors, then private business is not going to go to Ukraine even despite tax benefits and simplified procedures. https://pravo.ua/iv-business-legal-infrastructure-forum-zavershyvsia-obhovorenniam-innovatsiinoi-infrastruktury/

Today I had to work hard and help save the father of an employee who was grabbed on the street and dragged to a mobilization center. He is recovering from a serious operation that almost killed him not so long ago, but the main task of manhunters is to catch people, not to find out what condition they are in. Only the threat of criminal prosecution forced them to let the man go. But for this I had to write a complaint and help with advice, which is inaccessible to most people caught on the streets.

Mobile mobilization centers may appear in Ukraine, which will help avoid russian strikes on stationary centers. This was stated by People's Deputy, member of the parliamentary committee on national security, defense and intelligence Fedir Venislavsky. https://sud.ua/uk/news/video/336523-v-ukraine-mogut-poyavitsya-mobilnye-ttsk-venislavskiy-rasskazal-zachem

And from the very morning I was surprised to learn that the president had already signed a law limiting the independence of two anti-corruption agencies, while at the same time expanding the possibilities of the police and other law enforcement agencies to conduct searches without obtaining court consent.

Few deputies could remember a law of such importance being rushed so quickly through parliament. It was unveiled at a hastily convened committee session on July 22nd at 8am, at which neither the committee head nor the majority of members were present. By the afternoon, the bill had been rushed over to the president for signature. https://www.economist.com/europe/2025/07/22/outrage-in-ukraine-as-the-government-attacks-anti-corruption-watchdogs

Usually, the process of signing a law by the president, publishing it, and entering into force takes months, but here everything was done in two days. This is probably a record for Ukrainian lawmaking.

As protesters began to gather in Kyiv on Wednesday for a second night of demonstrations, Zelensky acknowledged public anger and said he would submit a new bill to parliament in response to the criticism, although he offered no further details about what it would contain. https://www.rbc.ua/rus/news/ploshchi-zabiti-kiyiv-i-shche-ponad-20-mist-1753296652.html

Kyiv's Western allies expressed their displeasure at the law. A spokesman for European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said she had requested "explanations" from the Ukrainian government. This puts at risk not only Ukraine's accession to the EU, but also European funding. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9w19vxjr44o

Ukraine’s commander in chief Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky gave an interview with The Washington Post on the eve of his 60th birthday. He considers himself strong enough not to resign. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/07/23/ukraine-syrsky-interview-war-trump/

Meanwhile, in Kramatorsk, the second largest city remaining under Ukrainian control in the Donetsk region, a difficult humanitarian situation is developing due to constant shelling by the russian occupiers. Residents of the city are advised to evacuate as soon as possible. https://realgazeta.com.ua/zhyteliv-kramatorska-zaklykaly-evakuiuvatysia-cherez-pohirshennia-humanitarnoi-sytuatsii/

The previous evening, a French Mirage-2000 fighter jet, which the air force recently received, crashed in Volyn. The pilot ejected in time. It was previously established that after takeoff, the pilot reported a critical electronics failure. The plane fell into a deserted area and sank in a flooded crater in the middle of a swampy area. https://tsn.ua/ato/aviakatastrofa-vynyshchuvacha-mirage-2000-na-volyni-ziavylysia-novi-detali-padinnia-litaka-2875817.html

Today, a new, third round of talks between Kyiv and Moscow took place in Turkey. The talks were held behind closed doors to the media and lasted less than an hour. Expectations were low, and the real agreements seem to have been another exchange of prisoners and bodies of the dead, and the next meeting at the end of the month. https://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/articles/cp3le91jdqyo?xtor=AL-73-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bukr%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bukrainian%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D

Hello guys, I've been extremely busy working on the ranch and ministering to those in the church - I continue to read here, though. I subscribe to National Review and saw this article today, which sounds like Zelensky has made a very bad decision. I don't know if furthering corruption is actually his intention, but the optics are very bad, either way. Would like your perspective on this, Wlad. Is it as serious as it sounds?

It is significant that the leading media suddenly saw the scope of corruption and authoritarianism of the government)

The question is not even that Zelensky and company have returned Ukraine to times worse than under the pro-russian Yanukovych, but that suddenly their reliable protection in the form of martial law has shaken. Protests were impossible yesterday, no matter who was behind them, today they are a real threat to the authorities. It seems that most Ukrainians will now easily agree to elections. Perhaps the protests are the result of testing another manipulative technology and a rehearsal for the next elections. And again, all this reminds me of 2014. I think soon protests will either end suddenly, or we will see those who will lead them. Then it will become clear whether this was a spontaneous reaction of people to posts on social networks or someone's planned preparation for something bigger.

Perhaps NABU was going to declare suspicion to someone from the untouchables in the near future and the authorities were forced to react extremely quickly and radically. Thus, this could be part of a larger plan, and the entire process controlled. Perhaps at the end of it there should be a signing of a peace agreement (for someone it will look like a capitulation) by the new president, who will suit both Trump and putin.

For now the State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Ukraine of HAWK Phase III Missile System and Sustainment and related equipment for an estimated cost of $172 million. https://www.dsca.mil/Press-Media/Major-Arms-Sales/Article-Display/Article/4253428/ukraine-hawk-phase-iii-missile-system-and-sustainment

I had a haircut today and my hairdresser complained that she was very afraid every time during an air attack. The last time her car had its window shattered by drone debris. Kyiv was quiet that night, but Odesa and Kharkiv again saw major destruction and casualties.

Wlad it’s excellent that you were able to get the father released from the mobilization center. However I worry that your assistance to him has brought you to the attention of the mobilization authorities and they will come for you, especially because you thwarted their efforts.

Assuming they were genuinely by the people, the protests are a very healthy thing, IMO. That the authorities didn’t even attempt to disperse them (as far as I know) is indicative of their lack authority and support among the people. With so much injustice and corruption heaped on top of the horrible war there is plenty for the people to be furious about, and it wouldn’t take much to generate huge demonstrations. As you said, they are a now a real threat to the authorities.
